Jerry expresses love for Miles Austin

March 24, 2009 5:37 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

DANA POINT, Calif. -- After a three-hour stakeout that took several twists and turns, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke with the Beast -- and a handful of other reporters.

There were several economic questions that a lot of you won't care about, so let's quickly skip to the good part. For the first time since his surprising decision to release T.O., Jones admitted that he made the move because he thought it would make Tony Romo a better quarterback. He said he never sought input from Romo while deciding what to do with T.O, but in the end, he thought the combination of Roy Williams and Miles Austin was a more appealing option.

That's when my ears really perked up. Jones has talked about Austin's potential in the past, but on Tuesday he indicated that the undrafted wide receiver was already in T.O.'s league.

"If [Austin's] close, then you're ahead of the game," said Jones.

I then asked Jones if he truly thought Austin could be as good as T.O., which quite honestly, sounded absurd to me.

"I certainly think he has a chance to be or I would've never released Terrell."

This was a whole new angle for Jones. So far, we'd heard him talk about how Williams was poised to have a breakout season once he had an entire offseason with the club. Now, he apparently thinks Miles Austin is a Pro Bowler in waiting.

Lots more to come on Tony Romo, including a classic quote from Jones regarding his quarterback's private life. Chew on this stuff and I'll return in a little bit.

The potential in Austin is there, can he put it all together and stay healthy is the question. I really hope he does.

I like Austin. However, he has nearly no chance to be as good as T.O. was. T.O. is one of the all-time greats.

he has definitely shown glimpses of what he can be...it isnt like we havent seen this guys big play ability...

I think if he's healthy and plays all 16 games as the #2 guy, he'll catch 34-45 passes, avg 18-22yds a catch and score 5-8 tds...thats pretty good for a guy who will be at best the 3rd option in the passing game.

Okay, I really like Miles Austin, and am more than glad TO is gone.

No way does he have the potential to be as good as TO. Yeah, he can get some scores and move the chains and some other good things, but as good as Owens? Naw.

As much as I like Miles, Jerry is on crack if he thinks Miles is close to T.O.

During traing camp of Switzer's last year I distincly remember him saying "this is the best team we've ever had." We went 6-10 that year.

If he truly expects Miles to have a breakout year then he needs to sign the guy long term to get a bargain type contract.

Who knew how good Owens could be after his first 20 receptions? And with Jerry Rice to be compared to?

Don't be too certain.

I think that's a pretty good estimation of what Austin will do next year David. Obviously no one knows if the guy can stay healthy all year, but if he can I think your numbers are realistic.

Jerry recently stated that he sees a bright future for Miles Austin in that he can become a very productive WR. I hope he is right but I'm not sure I'm convinced that he can. Let's take the Miami Dolphins and speculate on what they think of Miles.

Miami has 2 picks in the 2nd round plus their 1st round pick. Parcells signed and coached Austin, Sparano was OC and saw Miles everyday in practice and on Sunday. Yet, the Dolphins who are in great need for a WR, have not tried to go after Austin. I don't buy into that they will draft one, because we all know BP doesn't like playing rookies. So you have to ask yourself is Miles really going to be a good WR or is he just another guy?

But Josh Mcdaniels pulled a TO and stated "that's my quarterback!" the other day.
