Cowboys could have decision to make with Rolando McClain

i
Todd Archer, ESPN Staff Writer

OXNARD, Calif. -- The Dallas Cowboys will have a decision to make on Rolando McClain’s status to start the season.

With McClain suspended the first four games for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, the Cowboys could elect to leave him on the physically-unable-to perform list, which would cost him the first six weeks of the season.

McClain is recovering from offseason knee surgery and is not close to returning to practice just yet.

If the Cowboys choose to keep McClain on PUP to start the season, his suspension would run concurrently, so he would effectively miss five games with the Cowboys’ bye coming in Week 6.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said McClain is at a point in his rehab where he could be ready to go Week 1 against the New York Giants if he were eligible.

I guess it depends how bad we need that extra Roster spot.

We'll still have him for 10 games if we do this.

This could be an option if another LB emerges to make the final 53 and contribute. But if not, then let Ro come back and practice once he can. That impact on a game or two can be a big difference.
There is no need to make any decisions until the final 53 are to be set. If he hasn't practiced by then. Then go ahead and keep him on PUP.

I'll have to review the rules re PUP and concurrent suspension. I doubt he can serve his suspension on PUP. That circumvents the purpose of the suspension.

I'll be back.

That was my first thought too, without knowing anything about the rule.

Considering that the team has several positions in which they want to "go long" I think they covet that extra roster spot,,, Ro walks in off the street playing well and his practice habits are crap anyways, so not having him for one game is the only trade off IMO.

Why not? There is no advantage given. In fact, it constitutes a penalty to the team if you've got a guy who needs 6-8 weeks to recover from an injury.

This in no way circumvents the purpose of the suspension

RoMac finds more ways to create issues than a weekly publication; wonder how one so good can be so bad.

when does headache outweigh talent?

It's become more 'when does headache outweigh play' because even last year he didn't play great the whole way through, in spite of his talent. All the talent in the world won't make up for it if we only get a couple of games of good play out of him.

In his case just really get in good shape, get a plan in shape so he can be mentally prepared when we start having him in meetings in regular season when he comes back.”

Key phrase in this quote is "when he comes back".

How does it circumvent the rule if he could play week 1 if not for this suspension? We're just getting an extra roster spot

No we aren't getting an extra roster spot. Suspended does not count against the 53. Just like PUP.

Quote from article;

"Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said McClain is at a point in his rehab where he could be ready to go Week 1 against the New York Giants if he were eligible."

So if he would be ready in week 1, why would you PUP him until week 6? It is 6-weeks he would have to be out on PUP correct? I guess to carry an extra spot until week 5.

Call me crazy but I want Ro on this team. We have Super Bowl aspirations and we can't replace his talent with anyone else on our squad. It'll suck not to have him, whether it be for 4, 6 or 8 games, but he's a difference maker when he's in there.

For the money he is better than any 5th or 6th LB we could carry.

There is no risk in keeping him, with a possible large payoff.

He does make a difference, he is physical and has an attitude which this defense needs.

Not calling you crazy, calling all the posters who think we should cut bait with him crazy! Anybody catch Brinkleys play in the scrimmage or PS game the other night??
