Cowboys promote Matt Cassel to primary backup
i

The Dallas Cowboys plan to use Matt Cassel as the backup to Brandon Weedenfor the first time since trading for him, sources told ESPN's Ed Werder.

Cassel has had two weeks to learn the Cowboys' offense and said he feels comfortable being the backup against his former team when Dallas faces the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Kellen Moore drops to the No. 3 quarterback spot while Tony Romo is out with a broken collarbone.

My expectation is he'll be starting the games after the bye until Romo returns.

So cherish this last game of the Weeden era.

And, for God sake, somebody open up a window.

What makes you say that? He couldn't beat out Tyrod Taylor or E.J. Manuel for a job.

I think this is Weeden's last chance to show some life. Obviously management is getting impatient, 3 straight losses with 3 straight lackluster performances will mean that we will take the bye week to get Cassel ready for the Giants.

It's not really about beating them out, both of those players are probably better than him at this stage of the year and they are also younger and offer more long term upside. Bills would've been silly to drop a former first round pick in Manuel after he had a promising preseason to keep an aging vet.

Couldn't you replace Manuel with Weeden in this same sentence?

You can...except Manuel is 25 while Weeden is going to be 32 next week. Manuel also has been better on paper when he has played.

Because they won't be able to stomach another week of Weeden starting after this Sunday, when he goes 0-4 as a starter in Dallas and 0 for his last 14 starts in his career.

The bye week provides an ideal time to make that switch and get Cassel as ready as possible. First objective, don't be Brandon Weeden.

Him being moved to 2nd string has nothing to do with anybody being impatient. He was brought here to be the back up because they didnt trust Moore in that role.
Now, If Weeden struggles this week. And the staff feels like Cassell has been looking better or at least as good as Weeden in practices. Then yeah. he could very well start the Giants game.

I absolutely believe that if Weeden doesn't make a good showing in this game, he never starts for Dallas again.

Weeds sucks, yes he does. But last time I checked the defense has let this team down. Not him. If the D continues to play like it has the past 2 weeks Romo couldn't save this mess. Plus add in the horrific WR's this team has I don't see Cassel having any better results. Weeds is a loser, but the rest of the team currently is not that great either.

That doesn't mean he isn't a better fit in a more traditional offense than either of those two. Given the lack of creativity in offenses under Rex Ryan and the lack of playmakers on offense, they may value QB mobility more than we would considering we have playmakers on offense.
