Such a welcome change from the Wade Phillips days when we had that perfect roster that no other players ever had a chance of making...

Yeah. There was that study floating around last season about how much SEA brought in CFAs and how many of them got actual shots with the team. Between that and the mid-round picks they retained, that's how they built their roster.

Looking at that, and at our emphasis on the SPARQ scores in drafting and bringing in young players, it kind of looks like we've taken their blueprint for talent acquisition and applied it to the 90's era Cowboys blueprint for building a system. So far, so good.

That roster churning really keeps the bottom-roster guys on their toes. And they in turn keep the starters on theirs. When you see a guy come out of nowhere and take a starting job at OC or OG or WR or RB or LB or slot CB, it sends a message. If nothing else, burning an extra 7th on another RB ought to light a fire under the guys we've already got. Same goes for backup RT.

They look like they're concentrating on only bringing in the young guys, too, when it comes to taking fliers on these guys.

You never know how an NFL season is going to turn out. We didn't really get the chance to see all our guys playing together in the preseason, but it sort of feels like these coaches know what sort of team they've got and that they're just saving it up for the games to count. It sort of feels to me like we're about to wake up from a long sleep and start banging some heads.

I wish we were playing PHI in PHI a bit later in the season. What we do is not likely to have changed all that much, but I'd rather we had some tape on Bradford and their new offensive skill players to figure out what they're doing. If we get by them and the Giants early, though, it starts the year out with a bang. Maybe that's what we need to really get these young guys rolling.

I hope they learned that the first goal is NFC-E games. They're going to lose games, that is a somewhat of a fact. They have a lot to prove.

I can't wait until the Patriots come to play. To be the best, you have to beat the best.

I don't think he qualifies for the practice squad.

My guess is that Brown is signed after week one and Weems is sent packing if he's signed at all.

Yep, drafted in 2010 so no PS eligibility. He's being looked at to replace Weems, not Wetzel. I like his pedigree, recruited to USC as TE and converted to OT. Has nice feet and is able to play in space, unlike newly signed Jordan Mills. But not as physical as Mills. Injury prone through out his career. Like Parnell, he can also play short yardage/goal line TE.

I was thinking that same thing, especially after the drafting of Byron Jones and this Christine Michael trade. They definitely appear to be putting serious stock in the SPARQ numbers.

Yeah, figured he might make a decent swing option. At least more capable than Weems has shown to be.

Terrence West who we also were looking at in a trade had a very high Sparq score too

So there's another good example. And he's another guy that had 'issues' that resulted in him being traded.

I wonder they are looking at guys like Michael and West to put some fear in Randle. Kinda a "scared straight" to get his act together. Like " We just got this dude thats big and fast and this guy can easily take your snaps if you dont get your act together "

I think the Cowboys are looking to replace Weems

Im sure they've already made that decision. Mills gives the team a backup RT. Brown or whoever they sign will be the backup LT if needed on the inactive list. They have enough versatile OL to be able to play LT in a pinch to get through a game. I think they're looking for someone to place on the 53 who can start games if needed. Weems blew it.

Fun fact...

Charles Brown was the reason Tyron Smith didn't start as a freshman at USC.

I prefer Brown to Mills. He has experience on both sides of the OL. Not someone you want starting 10+ games but he would be serviceable for a few games if needed

I think it puts all three of them on notice.

Me too. I think after week one, if he's still available, they sign Brown and send Weems packing. Then, when Green comes back, he'll replace the lowest tackle in the pecking order.

Mills RT only.

I am beginning to worry about Free's recovery from 2 surgeries in the past 2 years.

I think the Cowboys are concerned about it to the extent that they don't trust what they've got in the backup roles.

Is this contingency plans or are they worried about Free's leg, or Tyron's bicep? Scary!

they are concerned that if Tyron goes down with injury Romo career is essentially over because there is currently noone serviceable to replace Smith. Hate to be that dramatic with it but its THAT important to cowboys.

I'm all for upgrading over Darrion Weems if possible, but Charles Brown cannot play. He is as soft as Charmin.
