When the Cowboys tendered defensive end Marcus Spears last week it was for an original draft pick at $1.226 million for 2010. That means if someone wants Spears, that team has to give up a first round pick.
Spears isn't totally happy with the tender, seeing how his backups, Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher were
each given second-round tenders worth $1.759 million.
When asked about it, Spears said, "Tough man! That's the way it is, man, it's business."
Jerry Jones understands how this may look, but indicated it was a business decision and nothing against Spears.
"It certainly was about the structure and where we are," Jones said. "That's as far as I want to go with that, because that’s competitive, its not competitive with Spears, it's competitive with other teams. The facts are they're legitimate. Good contracts offered by other teams are not necessarily bad news and all of that takes into concentration."
Spears has recently fired his agent and wouldn't disclose who his new agent is.
The Cowboys have the advantage here over Spears because it's doubtful if another team is willing to give up a first round pick for the defensive end.
His status with the team could also be in doubt after Jones said a few weeks ago he wanted competition at the defensive line spot regarding Bowen and Hatcher pushing for starting positions.
