Houston should also finish near sack lead
September, 10, 2013
By Adam Teicher | ESPN.com

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Chiefs outside linebacker Justin Houston is tied for the NFL lead in sacks with Robert Quinn of St. Louis. Both players had three sacks in their respective season openers.

Phelan M. Ebenhack/AP PhotoChiefs OLB Justin Houston made it a three-time habit of sacking Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert in Week 1.

Houston has a great chance of finishing the season at or near the top of the sack charts. Don’t look for Houston to catch Derrick Thomas, who in 1990 set the Chiefs’ record for single-season sacks with 20. But Houston could chase down Jared Allen, second on the single-season list with 15.5 in 2007.

Houston’s rise to becoming one of the NFL’s top pass-rushers has been dramatic. Houston didn’t get a sack as a rookie in 2011 until a December game against Chicago, when he had three. He then led the Chiefs with 10 sacks last season, becoming the first Kansas City player other than Tamba Hali to lead the Chiefs in sacks since they traded Allen to Minnesota after the 2007 season.

First I've heard of him. Hopefully, he won't have a 3 sack game against us.

PS: Just who are the players to watch from KC?

Defense: Flowers, Berry, Poe, Hali, Houston and Johnson

Offense: Charles, Bowe, Albert and Fisher

I expect this to be a field position game, with both teams needing to string together 8-10 play scoring drives to put the ball in the endzone. That's due to Smith's physical limitation as a quarterback and Kanas City being likely to double team Dez.

Great. I was thinking this might not be a real tough game. Guess there's no such thing anymore.

I don't think the Chiefs offense will be as much of a head ache to play against, but you're going into this game with the same concerns against the Giants defense. They are going to be rolling out Houston, Hali, and Poe. And their secondary is a lot better than the Giants'.

But if the O-line has a repeat performance I think they will do just fine. The offense is probably going to be struggling again, but I don't think they give us nearly as many matchup problems as the Giants do.

Jon Bales thought Houston vs Free wad one of the key matchups to the game.

Justin Houston is very underrated. Chiefs linebacker core is very stacked with Houston, Johnson, Hali, and Jordan.

But hold off on the "should near sack lead", yes he had a great game vs the chiefs, still has to play 15 more..

He had 10 sacks last year and got 3 against one of (if not the) worst teams in the league and all of the sudden he should finish near the sack lead? Gotcha.

I couldn't figure it out until I read the article. He's talking about the Chiefs all-time sack record.

I'd watch out for their corner Sean Smith as well. He can be tricky at times. He's not as big as Browner and Sherman but he's 6'3 like they are.

Because young players never develop?

He's a talented player who is coming into his own. I wouldn't be surprised if he finished top ten in sacks this year.

I think Dunbar getting in the game will give him 10-15 less chances to get a sack than the Giants had.

That could be done with 12 sacks.

I think Houston is a decent player, but I think its premature to say that he's going to flirt with 20.
