Eric (Chicago): Matt- Bears trade up to #1 to select McFadden...any chance that happens?
Matt Mosley: OK, great to see you guys this afternoon. We'll do rapid fire for the first 20 minutes and then we'll do some more in-depth Super Bowl talk. I think Jeff Ireland would like the whole world to think he's in love with McFadden. Watch for that to happen. The Dolphins will start leaking a bunch of stuff about how they think he's the second-coming of Jim Brown and Adrian Peterson. They want no part of that first pick. It just depends how much the Bears want to give up. They desperately need a running back.
Matt (Bethesda, MD): It's amazing how the Patriots have turned into NFL villains. They won three (count 'em three) superbowls under the radar. This year they are reviled by just about everyone I speak with. I know a Ravens fan who rooted for the Giants over the Pack because he thought the Giants had a better shot to knock them off. Why the sudden turn?
Matt Mosley: Matt:
I have a hard time agreeing that the Patriots won all three of the Super Bowls under the radar. I'll give you the first time. That season, the Patriots were a lot like this edition of the Giants. This is a natural process that takes place when a team becomes a dynasty. And it doesn't help their cause that the Red Sox and Celtics have crowded bandwagons. People resent all that winning. And there's a feeling that Bostonites are a little stuffy about their success. Of course I would never allege anything like that. And after the film thing, Belichick became an all out villain.
Paul hazlet new jersey: will either chris long or darren mcfadden be there at number 6 when the jets pick ? and if so who would they rather have ?
Matt Mosley: Paul:
First of all, let me admit that my draft board is a little dusty. I'm just not ready to move on to the draft. That said, I think there's a chance Chris Long is there. Some of it will depend on his workouts. McFadden's not going to be there at No. 6 unless he runs a 4.6 at the combine.
Gary (Cherry Hill,NJ): Who are the defensive coaches that Dallas Cowboys are talking to? In the end, who do you feel will be the best fit?
Matt Mosley: Gary:
You know we're about to get shouted down for talking Cowboys, but I'll do it anyway. I've been told that Wade wants to hire Emmitt Thomas to coach DBs and John Pagano from the Chargers to coach LBs. Not sure on the D line. I know Thomas has been a good coach in this league for many years, and he brings a ton of experience. Jerry wouldn't let Wade hire the OL coach. I think Wade wanted Solari and Jones trumped him with Houck. And how funny is it that this league is popular enough that I can throw out last names of O line coaches and you guys know exactly who I'm talking about.
Chris (Denver): Matt, I know it is early, but who does Romo start to date in the last three weeks of next season?
Matt Mosley: Chris, I've made calls to Jessica Alba on his behalf. I'm not too familiar with her work, but we think she has potential. And in a strange twist, Kate Winslet is making a late move. I'll keep you posted on this. Something about the sketch scene from Titanic.
JDG - Boston: Hey Matt, Who do you like in the Super Bowl? I like the Pats just because they just saw the Giants a couple of weeks ago and Bill now has 2 weeks to plan. Also, at number 7 if the Pats stay there who do you see them taking?
Matt Mosley: JDG:
If the spread stays around 12, I like the Giants to cover. The Patriots have been awful against the spread down the stretch. But since I don't pay attention to that type of stuff (wink), let me just say that the Pats will win straight up. I know the Giants look like a team of destiny right now, but the Patriots aren't going to come this far and not win. As well as the Giants' secondary has played lately, they just don't have enough players to match up. I watched Ross get burned by Welker a few weeks ago. And I think Moss is poised to have a monster effort.
Steve (Baton Rouge): Do you think the Saints will draft a running back?
Matt Mosley: Steve:
I realize McAllister and Bush were both banged up, but it's not like they don't havee some depth at RB. I haven't talked to Loomis about this lately, but I think the Saints are thinking defense all the way. That group was exposed several times this season. You need to have better players in the middle of that line. And I'm not sure my guy Simoneau is the answer at LB.
Vincent (Chicago): The Pats had success against pass-rush teams early in the season by keeping two TEs in to block. In week 17, the Pats were missing their TEs and half the OL, thus the Giants got some good pressure. Is it safe to assume they will keep two TEs in and see whether the DBs can cover Moss and Welker for 6 and 7 seconds?
Matt Mosley: Vincent: I'm rewarding you for being so observant. Honestly I don't recall the Giants getting a ton of pressure on Brady in the second half of that game. The Giants were up, 28-16, and then Spagnuolo stopped calling blitzes if I remember correctly. I think the Patriots may help out a little more on Umenyiora, but honestly, they should be able to go one on one with Strahan. I watched Tauscher absolutely stone him the other night. The best sign for the Patriots is that the running game has kicked into gear late in the season.
Scott (St. Paul, MN): I know that the Vikings need a DE to rush the passer, but they seem intent on rotating there myriad of players through that spot. What do you see them doing with their first pick?
Matt Mosley: What, Udeze's two sacks a season aren't cutting it for you? You're right that the Vikings need a DE to complemenet their outstanding tackles, but I don't think this team's in position to cherry pick certain positions. The secondary struggled this season, so it wouldn't surprise me at all to see them go after another CB or safety. And the Vikes haven't exactly hit the jackpot at receiver over the last few years. Might be good to take a peek at that position, too.
big baby (nj): Don't you think that the conditions in Green Bay may have nullified any pass rush? Neither side got any pressure, and both have legitimate pass rushers.
Matt Mosley: OK, I'll give you the playing surface. But I didn't think it was close to being as bad as the previous week. I just watched Tauscher pancake Strahan one too many times to give him the "playing surface" excuse.
Ty (Detroit, MI): Give us your opinion on L.T., I have no problem with him sitting if he was hurt. But I was a little disappointed by his "leadership" moping on the sidelines. If that is T.O. or Chad Johnson you media types would be all over them.
Matt Mosley: I love being thought of as a "media type." It is such a Parcells expression. Anyway, I don't have a huge problem with LT. He's played through injuries in the past. If he says he was at 50 percent and couldn't help his team, then I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. But watching your star player all bundled up not speaking to anyone is a little disappointing.
Andrew (Indianapolis, IN): Do you know of any way Commanders fans can formally protest Dan Snyder's debacle of an owner to the league? This is getting outrageous, year after year it is the same thing.
Matt Mosley: Andrew:
I'll look into this for you. I'm not sure a formal protest will accomplish much with this guy. He's not really known as being an effective listener. I'll admit this coaching search has been somewhat bizarre. But you have to admit it's sort of fun to see who he pulls out of a hat every week. If he was smart, he'd hire Williams or Jim Schwartz from Tennessee and move on down the road. Don't see it happening though.
Red (Abilene, TX): Does Baylor continue the run this weekend against Oklahoma? THey better win that one, because the schedule gets brutal after the Sooners.
Matt Mosley: Red:
The fact that game wasn't on TV is an indictment against the Big 12. It was perhaps the greatest game in Big 12 history and no saw it. Andy Katz was kind enough to call Drew on the team bus and post a column at about 2 a.m ET. I watched it live on the Internet, and the feed was actually pretty decent. Right now, I have us as a No. 8 seed. Honestly, any time we beat the Ags is my favorite sporting event of the year. Just a genius game. I apologize for this folks, but if like college basketball at all, get to know Curtis Jerrells.
Tim (Philly, PA): Tom Coughlin caught a lot of criticism for letting his starters play in week 17 to try and snap the Pats' winning streak, but because of that game I think the Giants have the confidence they need to pull the upset. That could turn out to be the coaching move of the year, but I haven't heard anybody talk about it yet.
Matt Mosley: Tim, we have to save at least one story line for next week. This dead week is just a killer, Destroys all the momentum. That's why conference championship Sunday is so much better than the Super Bowl. There, I said it. Now what was the question? Oh yeah. in retrospect Coughlin made the right call. And it's paid off in a big way. While the Giants were realizing they could play with the best team in football, the Colts and the Cowboys were off playing Grab A with the Titans and Commanders.
Kellan (NY): Rogers is apparently out in Detriot. Any chance the Bills trade for him and/or Roy Williams....we could use both and have a surplus of picks.
Matt Mosley: Kellan:
You should know what you're getting into. The guy's a great talent, but he'll embarrass you off the field at some point. But if you're that desperate for help on the line, have at him. Roy Williams in Buffalo? It's not happening.
DP (Los Angeles, CA): Which of my future Trojans NFLers will have the best career? My vote is for Sedrick Ellis. The guy is a beast.
Mike, Bridgewater, NJ: Hey Matt Quick question: Do you see the SB being a scoring fest like wk17 or do you see it being a lower scoring game, say under 55?? ;
Matt Mosley: Mike:
Give me the Over in this game. The Patriots were held in check last week, but I think a healthy Brady will light up the Giants secondary. And Manning has shown that he can put up great numbers against the Patriots' secondary,
Andy (Ann Arbor, MI): The Chargers fired James Lofton. I thought he did a great job resurrecting Chris Chambers from the dead from Miami and making that big tall guy (whose name I forget) into a dominating player in the playoffs. What's the story behind the firing? Seems like another bad move in a long line of bad personal moves for the Bolts.
Matt Mosley: Andy:
I need to look into that one. I'm pretty sure James still lives here in the Dallas area during the offseason, A lot of times former athletes (especially stars) don't want to put up in all the ridiculous hours. Lofton bounced around as an announcer before launching a coaching career. My guess (and I don't know this to be true) is that he couldn't handle the demands of coaching. The best coaches are rarely guys who were Hall of Famers. Look it up.
Blake, Ga: Hey Matt, what do you think about the Falcons hiring of Mike Smith? I tought of John Fox when I read about him.
Matt Mosley: I think it's a pretty safe hire Blake. May not be the splashy hire that Arthur Blank yearned for, but Smith has proven himself as a successful assistant. Stability's the most important thing for that organization right now, and Smith gives you that. Pasquarelli has something up right now on Smith. You should check that out once we're done here.
Majeed (San Diego): Re: Lofton said he was stunned by the firing. Norv quickly hired Charlie Joiner to the position. Seems like he just wanted his own guy.
Matt Mosley: Again, I'll try to get to the bottom of this for you. I'm thinking Chargers fans are probably OK with Joiner coming to town!
Jay Cutler: How many Super Bowls will I play in/win?
Matt Mosley: Jay, I saw your best game of the season against the Titans. I think you'll play in at least one Super Bowl. Not ready to commit to you winning one. The USC guy I was trying to think of is named Rey Maulaga. I watched a couple of USC games and was just blown away.
Matt (Wynnewood, PA): Do you see Eli's success continuing into next season?
Matt Mosley: Matt:
As long as the Giants continue to surround Manning with the right players (Jacobs, Bradshaw, Boss), I think he'll continue to improve. Winning three playoff games on the road is just immesurable in terms of what it can do for your confidence. It won't correct his mouth-breathing, but I think it will do wonders for him as a player.
Dave (Boston): Does an Eli Victory score him a few more ad spots or is he stuck licking his brothers oreo's forever?
Matt Mosley: Dave:
I think Eli and Peyton will start doing dual ads now. He'll probably be a bit more selective than big brother, though. As Archie has pointed out, Peyton has always been more interested in his press clippings and endorsements than Eli.
Remy - Atlanta: Hi Matt - Can we officially say that Tiki was the problem in the Giants locker room? I played against him in College, and he seemed like a nice guy, but with him being the only big change, kind of makes you wonder...
Matt Mosley: Remy:
Tiki was an elite running back. I think it's too easy to say his departuree is what helped the Giants to a Super Bowl. Now, I will say that his comments about Eli Manning helped rally this team together. When Eli fired back, it resonated with his teammates in a big way. They saw him in a different light and I think anyone in the Giants organization would tell you that. So in effect, Tiki did his part in helping the Giants return to the Super Bowl.
Paul Pierce Boston Mass: Any problem with me congratulating Giants players at MSG the other Day?
Matt Mosley: Paul:
Do what you have to do man. LeBron was walking around wearing a Yankees cap during the playoffs. If you want to show the Giants some love, I have no problem with that. And I think Patriots fans can live with it, too.
Hank (Portland): I laughed out loud when I read 'It won't correct his mouth-breathing' and now people in the office are looking at me weird. You're the best Mose!
Matt Mosley: Hank, you had me at "I laughed." I'm trying to expand my Portland audience on Hashmarks. Please spread the good word.
Kevin (Seattle): Matt if you could just tell me that Sean Alexander will be in a Houston Texans or Chicago Bears uniform next year and Jonathan Stewart will be soaring in blue and green.
Matt Mosley: Kevin:
I'm glad you brought up Stewart. I had the pleasure to watch three of his games this season. And yes, Houston is a graveyard for broken down running backs (see Ahman Green), but the Seahawks are still acting like they want Alexander around.
Scott Norwood (Buffalo, NY): Any chances Lawrence Tynes takes my place as the biggest Super Bowl goat ever because the Giants luck back in 1990 might come back to bite them now?
Matt Mosley: Scott:
Lawrence has regained his confidence after the 47-yarder. I'm sure Coughlin would've cut him, though, if the Giants had scored a touchdown in OT. The only reason he got to kick the 47-yarder is because he snuck onto the field. And Coughlin was trying to keep from losing his nose at the time.
Paul Pierce Boston Mass: Is Belicheck best coach in sports 2day or all time 4 that matter. The great Parcells never won a playoff gm without him on staff...Makes you think???
Matt Mosley: Paul: Really appreciate your participation today. I think Belichick has to be considered as one of the greatest coaches of all time. And if they go 19-0, you might as well hand him the title. Of course, my guy Lombardi never got to coach in a ton of Super Bowls. I was just in his front yard the other night by the way. Thanks to his grandson, John, for the official Green Bay tour. OK, I'm due on a Super Bowl conference call. You guys have been great! Talk to you next week.
