IRVING, Texas -- As ESPN Insider Todd McShay has put together his mock drafts, he has been stuck when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys. He has had the Cowboys taking defensive tackles Timmy Jernigan (twice) and Stephon Tuitt, safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and in his most recent mock, in which he served as the general manager, he took wide receiver Brandin Cooks. “For many reasons I’m as intrigued as to what Dallas will do as with any team in the first round,” McShay said on a conference call with NFL Nation reporters on Thursday.

“Every time I get to Dallas, I can’t find a player I feel who is a good value matching a need they have, so I always wind up reaching or going completely off the value chart,” McShay said.

Mocks and opinions from "Experts" have been all over the piece for Dallas at 16. It's been interesting, so wide open that no one really has a solid opinion on where they will go. The needs are obvious and if we were picking at 12 or 13, we would be sitting perfectly.

that is the problem with being mediocre, your draft picks are in the mediocre part of each round, just far enough away to make it cost prohibitive to trade up to get an elite prospect, just high enough to feel like you aren't getting great value at your pick.

He says there's nobody to take at 16, yet he has Dallas passing on Barr, Martin, and others.

Well...we saw what patience got them last year. The get completely lucky...and have Shariff Floyd drop into their laps. And somehow managed to mess that up.

How did we mess it up? We passed on a DT bust who 24 other teams passed on, and flipped the pick for a Pro Bowl center and legit #2 receiver.

I don't see how they messed it up; they lucked out and got two very good players.

There will be players there at 16 that offer value; it is up to Jerruh to decide what he values more: the player, or more picks.

I think McShay is stuck figuring out what the Cowboys will do because the Cowboys have not established a draft pattern to follow or an identity over the past years. JJ is known as the gambler and is so very hard to read and predict.

Great post. Nothing to add.

Let me preface this with I'm glad we passed on Floyd as I thought he was way overrated coming out, but if we aren't calling Claiborne a bust yet it might be premature to call Floyd one

What people always seem to forget is no draft goes according to form.

Sure, let's say Floyd isn't a bust. We still traded the #16 pick for a Pro Bowl center and a legit #2 receiver. So how did we "mess that up?"

And what's dumb is that all he has to do is ask someone from espndallas or check the team's website.

Trading back makes sense but there will be value at 16; the Cowboys just have to be patient.

This is going to be one of those drafts with a half dozen major surprises before our pick at 16. It will be impossible to predict, but it could very well drop a great player into our laps at 16.
