Jerry's pre-draft filibuster

April 23, 2008 8:00 AM

<snipped> from larger blog entry

When I asked Jerry how much separation there was between the four so-called elite cornerbacks (Aqib Talib, Leodis McKelvin, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Mike Jenkins) and the rest of the corners, he said it wasn't as significant as it's been in the past. He said some of the other corners "might have one hole" in their games that the elite players don't have. Trust me on this one: Keep your eye on Virginia Tech's Brandon Flowers at No. 28. A couple of teams think he's the best all-around corner in the draft.

sounds like something we should expect because we don't expect it.

I've been seeing some mock drafts projecting him as a legit CB pick later in the first round. Understand he's very physical player with all the talent in the world except he's 5-9. Admit I've never seen him play & don't know if he really better then Cason.

At least Jerry's comment seems to rule out we automatically will draft a RB in the first round. Maybe he's seen all those mocks who just assume we'll draft Felix Jones.

It's a lock that one of our 1st round picks will be a corner, so this wouldn't be a shock. I guess it all comes down to how our draft board rankings look at the corner position.

I keep hearing he is the type of Player that Wade likes in his defense.

We will see.

Personally I thought he was an up and down player when I seen VT play.

Yeah, it would be great if they get Pacman. The two of them can room together.......

Norm was name dropping Brandon Flowers at #28 yesterday as well.
And this guy at New Era Scouting mentioned his name as well, even tho it was lost in the Cason love.

It's interesting, because it was about this time last year when Anthony Spencer's name started floating around. Not a sexy pick, who most kinda gagged over.

Flowers name hasn't been mentioned with the Cowboys as much as some of the other CBs, so now that he is, there might be something to these rumors floating around...

Let's see what the board has to offer at 22.

If one of the big 4 are still there we could trade out and take Flowers at 28.

I would keep an eye on him, but I'm 6'6" and unfortunately he's below my sight line, maybe if he stands on a few phone books or something.

I have to say that if we took Cason at 22 and Flowers at 28 I would be fine with that. I believe we can't have enough good ones and you would be able to turn Ware loose and Ellis too.

Pick up Ray Rice in the second by moving up or staying put and my day would be complete. I don't think the WR value will be there for us in the first round so I think we just wait til next year.

I've seen Flowers play a lot and he's never particularly impressed me, but I'm sure that NFL scouts see and know a lot more than I do. They says he's physical and instinctive. His stats say he's short and slow. He led his team in solo tackles (56) in '07 and had five INTs.

I read this early and couldn't wait to see some of the 'Doom and Gloom' posts that I'm sure are to come from a lot more of the more vocal members of the forum who do not like Flowers at all.

That is about the only part of that situation that does make me smile. :)

Flowers is a good player but he is not physically gifted at all. He is short and slow.

I'd rate him clearly behind the top 5 guys.

Right now I'd say:

elite: 10-22
DRC
Leodis McKelvin
Mike Jenkins

next group:22-28
Cason
Talib(dropped from elite because of potheadedness and lack of professionalism)

next tier:30-50
Flowers
King
Porter
Godfrey

How exactly did DRC become the most elite CB in this draft?

Well, I don't care one way or the other about Flowers, but of course Jerry will hype the players that he knows will be available to him in the draft, just makes sense. Why would you hype McKelvin when you know you have no chance of drafting him.

Bet you won't hear Jerry say how great Jake Long is, whats the point of it.
