Phillips Busts TE For Curfew Violation

August 9, 2007 12:29 PM

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips may have gotten tired of all those Camp Cupcake stories coming out of San Antonio. Last Saturday, he launched into a profanity-laced tirade after several players were late for a special teams session.

He then cut tight end Andy Thorn immediately when he missed curfew Tuesday night in San Antonio. Someone from the organization just called to say that Phillips stood in front of the team Wednesday and used Thorn's release as an example of what could happen to other players.

Not that Thorn's a huge loss, but he had a great chance to make the team as a third tight end.

I think Phillips is well aware of the perception that he was running a soft camp, and over the past week, he wanted to show his players that his laidback demeanor shouldn't be interpreted as an anything goes atmosphere.

Back with more obscure tight end news in a few minutes.

Good for you Wade. I know some will say he cut a no body and that is true but no bodies can't afford to break curfew. Just like Jimmy cutting Curvin Richards, guys on the edge can't afford screw-up’s.

Reporters are calling the Commanders camp, "Camp Donut" because there are so many zeroes.

That explains why Thorn was suddenly cut after people said that he was having a good camp......

I would figure Bergen is now the odds-on favorite if they keep 3.

Good. Now lets see him grill a vet like that.

Jimmy Johnson move for sure, but Jimmy also let vets get away with things a fringe player never could think of doing.

Any person in Thorn's position is just plain stupid to screw off.

I dunno. Galloway and several others I've heard who were actually on site in San Antonio have said that while Wade hears what the media is saying, he truly doesn't seem to care about it. He's like Switzer in that way -- secure enough in himself and his way of doing things that he doesn't care what no-nothing outsiders think.

How about this: As Romo has said, Wade told the guys that he'd treat them like men as long as they acted like men. When guys show they can't, he takes action. It's that simple. I don't think the media or Jen Engel's cutesy "Camp Cupcake" moniker had anything to do with it.

I agree. I don't Wade pay attention or stays up at night worrying about what the media is saying. Wade has been in this business long enough to know how to handle different situations.
