Broncos CRYING Foul On Phillips
August 19, 2007 3:14 PM

Just when I'd finally made peace with the Broncos, several players went public last night with allegations that Wade Phillips coached way too hard in the Cowboys' 31-20 preseason victory at Texas Stadium.

The Broncos even attributed injuries to defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban (a former Cowboys first-round pick) and running back Travis Henry to mean old Wade, who was apparently exacting revenge for his firing in Denver 13 years ago.

Veteran safety John Lynch noted that his team stuck with its base, seven-man front, and took measures to protect its injury-riddled offensive line with conservative play-calling.

Cue the string section.
"That's not what they did," Lynch said. "They came out and game- planned us, blitzing every play. They came after us. It's no excuse for the way we played. But I think they might have broken the code of ethics for the preseason."
Apparently quarterback Jay Cutler also joined in the whine tasting event in the visitor's locker room. Never mind that he's started five games in the league, and might see a couple of blitzes at some point this season.

Contrary to popular belief in this forum, I'm more than willing to rip the Cowboys when they're in the wrong. But in this case, you have a new head coach who is trying to implement a different defensive philosophy, as Tim Cowlishaw points out.

And he had one proven pass-rusher on the field last night.

I still think the Broncos have a chance to make some noise in the AFC, but the only thing I hear right now is a bunch of sniffling.

Losing a preseason game means nothing at this point. Losing your pride is a different story.

I am actually going to watch nfl live one tomorrow, one of the worst programs on tv. I hope wingo and the greatest linemen ever; mark schlereth are on, I cant wait to see what schlereth says.

He will be more whiny than any of them. And since he went out of his way to take shots at our team and point out that our offensive line is average at best all offseason, I am curious as to what he says about the broncos defense.

Love the tone of this story. Nice to see it.

BRONCOS BOO-HOO ABOUT 'BOYS

To the extent that there are unwritten rules that apply in the preseason, the Broncos believe that the Cowboys broke them on Saturday night.

"They came out and game-planned us, blitzing every play," safety John Lynch said. "They came after us. It's no excuse for the way we played. But I think they might have broken the code of ethics for the preseason."

Dallas coach Wade Phillips said that blitzing is a big part of what they do in a 3-4 defense.

From our perspective, we think that the Broncos shouldn't complain. The preseason is the time for the doing whatever a team thinks it needs to do to get ready for the season. The score doesn't (or at least shouldn't) matter.

Besides, the league wants to see "real" football, so that fans will continue to plunk down "real" money for these necessarily not "real" games.

First year coaches are supposed to do that to get their systems in place.

Besides, do you hear about the Titans complaining because the Patriots threw every blitz in the book at Vince Young?

This is getting too much press and if I were a Broncos fan, I would be ashamed of the team.

That is what I said in the other thread, The pats and titans dont like each other and they were really coming after the titans and the jets and vikings were attacking, along with the eagles who were coming after delhomme and carr.

I will not even get into the irony of a cut-block team blubbering about the virtues of sportsmanship.

I remember Wade Phillips saying last week during the post game that we were going to do more blitzing this week. He didn't sound like he had any sort of agenda against Denver.

They should be. If you look at the Broncos/Bears preseason game from a couple of years ago, which was the FIRST preseason game, you'll see that the Broncos got two sacks from cornerbacks and one from a LB.

He also said after the game that they didn't have any plays that they didn't also practice against them during the week.

Apparently Broncos safety John Lynch thought the Cowboys violated a sacred trust on Saturday night in their preseason game at Texas Stadium.
"They came out and game-planned us, blitzing every play," Lynch told The Denver Post. "They came after us. It's no excuse for the way we played. But I think they might have broken the code of ethics for the preseason."
That would be the code that suggests players go about half speed, especially regulars, during preseason games.
Fans can pay regular price for tickets, parking, souvenirs and merchandise during the preseason, but the players silently agree to give about half the effort.
Nice trade.
Don't worry, only two more games of Football Without the Calories before this sham is over and we can get onto the games that matter.

No kidding.

Shall we wait til the regular season to practice a new defensive scheme? Would that be ok with Denver and their fans? I think Wade is also building some confidence here and I'm all for it. I don't know about other teams but when the season begins, I'd like to hit the ground running.

That's just unbeleivable.

I've never heard any team make statemnts like that.

I'm sure Shananhan took note of comments like this.

I'd actually put a different spin on it.

I sort of got the feeling reading all these reports this week about the two teams scrimmaging, that Denver was sort of outdoing the Boys in practice.

And that I don't doubt that Dallas probably felt that since the coaches had held them back during practice to avoid injuries, etc.

..that the Broncos must have thought the same rules would apply in the pre-season game. Which isn't going to happen.

Dallas probably wanted to finish the three days of working out with Denver including the pre-season game so as to leave a good taste in the Cowboys mouth.

I don't doubt Dallas wanted to win and needs to win to keep the players focused as much as possible.

I will say this..take last weeks game against the Colts..who hadn't won but once or twice in the last 10 pre-season games..

..then fast forward to Denver..who hadn't lost but once or twice in the last 10 pre-season games..

and what is the commoin denominator..?

Dallas..dominating both and for much of the time..with their 2nd and 3rd strings.

So that's saying something for Dallas.

These are two top teams in their divisions and beating them as Dallas has..speaks about the coaching and the depth of this team.

And the talent level, too.

Denver would do well and just get back to practicing.

I don't doubt the heat worked in our favor after playing in it for most of the week..advantage Dallas.

Just like playing in Mile High is advantage Denver when any team plays there.

But to whine..?

I'm going to have to have some cheese to digest all that Denver whining.

It's a little thick if you ask me.

The Commanders and Steelers blitzed each other the whole first half. Nothing like the Cowboys did against the Broncos. The Cowboys are trying to learn the Phillips 34 defense. They have to learn how to blitz.
