Matt (Richland, WA): Matt, love the coverage...I check you out all day long! Eagles O-Line is good as is? Peters if available does he make it better? Thanks!
Matt Mosley: Thanks, Matt. And let's welcome everyone to today's chat. I'm not a fan of Andy Reid's proposed plan to move Shawn Andrews out to left tackle. The guy's been banged up and he went through some personal issues. I think a position change (yes, I know he played it in college) is a bit much to expect. I still think drafting someone is more likely to happen than acquiring Peters through a trade. The Bills want a lot for him.
Steve (Long Island, NY): Matt, now that Plax got the ole' Heave-Ho, have the chances of acquiring Boldin or Braylon gone up significantly? (More so Braylon at this point I would think?)
Matt Mosley: I know Mangini was heaping praise on Edwards at the owners' meeting, but that may have been posturing. I still think Boldin's the better possibility. He doesn't want any part of the Cardinals, and they don't have room to give him the contract he wants. The Giants have a surplus of draft picks. Go make it happen.
Mike D, Philadelphia PA: What's up Mattman!! If the Eagles can't trade for a top vet. WR, is there a chance they go to a more balanced attack this season? They have a true fullback now, and I think if they trade up to get a tackle, and draft a good compliment to B-West, we could change the face of the offense from a 70/30 pass to run ratio to a more even 50/50 split. Can we expect this to happen if we can't get a veteran wideout? Keep on keepin' on Matt! Peace!
Matt Mosley: Thanks, Mike! You're not going to see a 50-50 split in Andy Reid's West Coast offense. It's not not going to happen. The best you can hope for is a 60-40 -- and I think he started leaning that way later in the '09 season. I'm one of the few guys who thinks the Eagles will pass on a RB in the first round. There's a thought they can find a quality guy later in the draft.
Alex (Princeton, NJ): It may be too early to tell, but do you see the Beast being as strong this coming season as it was last season, relative to other divisions?
Matt Mosley: It's hard to say because things change so much. We thought the Beast was stacked last season and then everyone sort of hit a lull at some point. The Eagles obviously made a nice run -- and I think the Giants have reloaded on defense. So with Haynesworth in Washington and the Cowboys perhaps focusing more on the ground game, sure, I think the Beast could be better. And as of today, I certainly have it as the best division in the NFC.
Michael (FL): What does the DT depth chart look like on the Giants?
Matt Mosley: Canty and Alford are probably the starters with Robbins and Bernard rotating in to replace them. I think there's a chance, though, that Robbins is traded because the team's so deep at DT right now. Just something to keep in mind. I know I left someone out. I'm working on two hours' sleep so maybe you'll cut me a little slack.
Bob (Fairport, NY): Matt, you've sold me on Brian Robiskie. What are the chances the Giants actually take him now that they gave up on Plaxico?
Matt Mosley: Welcome back to the program, Bob. You've been a faithful chatter -- if there's such a thing. The problem with Robiskie is that he's not that much different than Steve Smith. And that's not a knock -- since I think Smith's a reliable No. 2 type. It's just that Robiskie needs time to grow into his role. I think he has superb hands and I think he has a chance to be Boldin-like...But he's not a Day 1 No. 1 guy.
Dominic (Los Angeles, CA): What is the scoop on Marvin Harrison? He would be a great target for Romo opposite Roy Williams
Matt Mosley: Not much tread left on those tires. He'll get a lifetime achievement contract from someone, but it won't be the Cowboys. They just released an aging player, in part, because he was impeding the development of younger receivers such as Miles Austin and Sam Hurd. Bringing in Harrison seems to counter-intuitive to what Jerry's trying to accomplish.
Kevin (Saskatoon): Matt, what's the deal with Crabtree? Mcshay has Jeremy Maclin going ahead of Crabtree in his latest mock?
Matt Mosley: It's an interesting trend, Kevin. I noticed that Mike Mayock of the NFL Network had Crabtree slipping out of the top 10. He thinks the Raiders could go after Heyward-Bey out of Maryland at No. 7, which seems rather high for that player. I think anyone who passes on Crabtree may end up regretting it BIG TIME. I've seen the kid since he was in high school. He's got something Maclin doesn't have.
Justin (Denton,Tx): how much would Dan Snyder love an uncapped 2010?
Jason (Brookline, MA): Hey Matt! Wait, a sec... the DT depth chart for the Giants still has incumbent starter Barry Cofield, right? Last I heard, he's in his contact year.
Matt Mosley: Yes, Barry Cofield's still in the mix. I just don't think he'll be starting now that Canty's here. They love the pressure that Fred Robbins was bringing up the middle early last season. As long as he's not traded, he'll start and Cofield will be part of what should be a strong rotation.
Gene (Allentown, PA): Matt, great work. Cowboys? Doesnt it seem simple to solve the Boys running game issues... Barber did better as backup, two great young studs in the barn. Start Barber first series (your paying him), then switch to combination of Jones and Choice for rest of first half, wear the defense out chasing the two young bucks, then put Barber back in the second half to rumble over a defense tired from chasing the other two guys. They come in to releive as needed to he can take a breath. Barber still starts, gets most carries, but you involve all three talents. What are your thoughts?
Matt Mosley: Gene, I think Barber needs to lean on a defense for a few series before you sit him down. I'm not sure I necessarily see the wisdom in putting him out there for one series. One of the reasons Ward was so effective for the Giants is because Brandon Jacobs banged away on the defense for two or three series first. But you're right in saying that Jason Garrett has to find a way to use all three players. And as Tommy Coughlin will tell you, that's not an easy task.
Doug (NY): But is Boldin the true #1 receiver the Giants need? Isn't he himself more of a possession receiver than a deep threat (agreed better than anyone else we currently have)?
Matt Mosley: Edwards is more of a downfield threat -- yes. But Boldin's much more consistent and I think he's better after the catch.
James (Lovington, NM): Hey Matt, with all that has been happening with the Jay Cutler situation, why do you think Jerry Jones has not done something to put the Cowboys back in the news?
Matt Mosley: Some of the stuff that came up last season (the Witten-Romo-T.O. triangle) were a little much for Jerry's taste. I don't think he minds flying under the radar for a few days. Give Cutler and Plax their day in the sun/rain. Something will happen at Valley Ranch to stoke the fires soon. Don't worry.
Kevin (Austin TX): Matt, am I the only one who thinks Jason Campbell is a very good QB? I dont even like the Skins but he seems to have it all, but just cant get his organization to keep things consistant. With this being the first time in his career running the same offense twice in a row, do you think he will shut his critics up for a while?
Matt Mosley: Kevin, there's no bigger Campbell apologist than me, but the guy has to have a productive season. Does he have to throw for 4,500 yards? No, but he needs to continue to limit his mistakes and not take as many sacks. Campbell fell victim to the offensive line wearing down in the second half of the season. Ther running game dried up and that made Campbell less effective. And it's not like he's throwing to big targets. Other than Cooley, he really doesn't have someone he can count on for a string of good performances at receiver. Santana Moss is a gamebreaker, but the club desperately needs either Thomas or Kelly to show up this season. But I'm certainly rooting for Campbell to find it this season.
Scott[Buffalo NY] [via mobile]: Hey Mosely sorry but I have to ask another Jason Peters question. We all want to keep him here in Buffalo but not for the price he wants. If we were to trade what do the Bills want for him and what do you think we get for him.
Matt Mosley: I think the Bills are looking for a first rounder because the guy's one of the best in the league. It's more reasonable to see them getting a second and a fifth (same as Shockey), but I don't think the Bills will do it for that.
Samoyed(Frisco, TX): Hello nemesis! You've gone on record here and on your radio show that Dallas has little chance of competing for the NFC East title. You've even predicted a worse record than last year's 9-7. But, when you consider that everyone else in the NFC East has lost key players in key positions, it doesn't seem to be an unbiased assessment. If we are to believe (according to you) that the main problem last year was "chemistry" and a "divided the locker room," then how can this team be worse if they removed those negative elements? Factoring in the talent pool of established players plus the surprising success of last year's draft class, it only seems logical that this team is poised to improve last year's effort. Throw in another productive draft class and this team could be dangerous. Regardless, if this team stays healthy, then they should be able to line up a team capable of beating any team in the NFC East. In my book, that doesn't equal 9-7 or worse. Is their something more sinister to your predictions than an unbiased evaluation of talent? How do you reconcile your grim predictions with the facts?
Matt Mosley: OK, it's finally time we put a 250-word limit on questions! Samoyed, I'm happy you stopped by, though. I don't recall saying they'd finish worse than 9-7. If you can produce audio of that or a transcript, have at it. But to save you time, there's nothing sinister about my outlook for the season. I don't think getting rid of a one guy T.O. will do as much for the team as some people think -- but it will certainly help. If for nothing else, young receivers such as Sam Hurd, Pat Crayton and Miles Austin won't be walking around wondering who they should listen to. T.O. had a stranglehold on that locker room. Now we'll see without his huge influence. If Jason Garrett will focus on the running game, I certainly think 11-5 is a possibility.
Tim (california): If you had to pick the best NFC division, which would it be? NFC South, NFC Least? Not the West for sure.
Matt Mosley: I still think the Beast is the best division top to bottom. And despite the fact the Cards made it to the Super Bowl, I still think the NFC West is the worst division -- until someone proves otherwise. Seahawks, Niners and Rams were all bad last season. Why wouldn't that be the worst division?
chad (austin tx): from what you have heard, what prospects is Dallas excited about that is within their drafting range of the 2nd and 3rd rounds. i'd like to see louis delmas or one of those big boys on the oklahoma offensive line in dallas next year.
Matt Mosley: I think "one of those big boys" is a tackle named Phil Loadholt. I know the Cowboys love his enormous size and he's fairly athletic for a guy that huge. You bring a really good name in Delmas. Kid played at Western Michigan. Cowboys are in love iwth him and are hoping he's there in the second round. I also like Robiskie a lot in the second round. Don't rule him out.
David Ropp (Urbana, Ohio): If Browns want to trade Edwards who do you think they might get in return?
Matt Mosley: draft picks
Justin (Denton,Tx): What is taking safety Roy Williams so long to find a home?
Matt Mosley: Since he came into the league in 2002, the game has changed. Teams want two safeties that can cover. They're not looking to put a lumbering safety back there. I think Williams is actually a good person, but I don't think he has that much passion for the game anymore. Who knows? Maybe being released will give him a little kick. I doubt it.
Craig-Philly: If you were a betting man...Do the Giants have a better chance of getting Boldin or Edwards? AND, do you think they will obtain one of them>
Matt Mosley: Boldin...And yes, I think there's a 60 percent chance that something happens on the trade front.
Mike (Piscataway NJ): Any chance the Giants do the unexpected and not draft WR in Round 1? How about James Lauranitus with their first pick and a WR in the second round?
Matt Mosley: I guess J.L. might be a possibility late in the first round, but I'd beware of Ohio State linebackers these days.
Ryan (Miami): Matt, considering the Winslow deal, is it safe to say that Witten is WAY underpaid? He's easily the best tight end in the league!
Matt Mosley: The Cowboys made him a very wealthy man a couple years ago. It might start looking a bit outdated, but he's certainly not the type guy to start whining about it. He signed a contract. He's gonna honor it.
Mike(NY): I keep asking this question! Please Matt, give me some closure!!! Do you think Kiwi could be part of a trade? I hear many rumors!
Matt Mosley: I am 99 percent sure Kiwi will not be in the trade. But Reese always reminds me that he listens to ALL offers. So that's what that 1 percent is for
Bob (Fairport, NY): Any chance the Giants let Osi walk if his contract demands are around Haynesworths deal?
Matt Mosley: I think we have to wait and see how Umenyiora plays this season. But right now, it's hard for me to imagine the Giants letting a Pro Bowler like him go. They love having depth at defensive end. When everyone got banged up last season, you saw how much the defense missed Umenyiora. Don't run him off just yet.
Robert (California): who do think wade phillips will have as his to starting backs and do you think choice gets more trouches this season ?
Matt Mosley: Barber will start and be backed by Felix Jones. Choice needs to have at least five touches per game.
Samer (Austin, TX): Do you think someone like Donald Brown from UCONN would be a good selection for Philly in the second round?
Matt Mosley: He may go in the first. excellent college player with elite speed. Also has excellent hands. I'd draft him.
Bob (Fairport, NY): When is this Eli deal going to get done and what kind of figures should we expect?
Matt Mosley: I think training camp -- and it will be HUGE.
Steve (Long Island, NY): I read in a quick one liner that Brandon Marshall MAY be a possibility to be traded by Denver also. Is that realistic? If so, do you think the Giants A. have a shot, or B. would pull the trigger on him?
Matt Mosley: Marshall has some baggage himself. I doubt the Giants would seriously consider trading for him.
Todd (Jersey): You're crazy if you think Jason Peters would bring only a 2nd and 5th; and comparing his value to Shockey is ridiculous. 1st, LT is the 2nd or 3rd most important postion. TE is near the bottom. Finally, Shockey hasn't been good for four years. Peters will bring a 1st and a 4th/5th.
Matt Mosley: That's fine. But Peters hasn't lived up to expectations. I don't think teams are going to start throwing around first-rounders for him. But I'm fine with being called "crazy." Actually have some experience with that.
Justin (Denton,Tx): chances mike shanahan ends up in the beast in 2010?
Matt Mosley: Cows and Commanders both possibilities
M (DC): If Crabtree falls to No. 13, should Commanders pull the trigger? Also, how does the Cutler trade affect their draft plans and who would be available at 13?
Matt Mosley: If he's the best player on your board, sure.
Matt (DC): What kind of deal do you think the Commanders could get if they wanted to trade down and Mark Sanchez was still available?
Matt Mosley: Commanders just don't have enough ammunition in this draft to do much. They could give up a No. 1 in '2010 I suppose -- if they're in love with Sanchez. But I think something like that would be contingent on getting a second-rounder for Jason Campbell. I don't think the 'Skins found any takers.
Justin (Denton,Tx): Any chance Bobby Carpenter gets released or traded before the season begins?
Matt Mosley: For the right place, sure. But now that Kevin Burnett's gone, Carpenter's more valuable to the Cowboys
Doug (NY): How about Ocho Cinco for the G-men? Read rumors of him as well
Matt Mosley: Another head case. Don't see it happening.
Bob (Fairport, NY): People keep telling me that the Steelers win over the Cardinals was better than the Giants win over the Patriots. The Steelers were favored to win, while the Giants were 14 pt underdogs.
Matt Mosley: I thought both games were tremendous, but the Giants-Pats will always be my favorite. There was just so much great drama leading up to it -- and then it delivered. It had everything, including The Play. As great as the Cardinals' comeback was in the second half, I never though the Steelers were going to lose that game. Is that just me?
Bob (Fairport, NY): If Romo flounders again this year any chance the Cowboys decide to blow it all up and start over again?
Matt Mosley: Nope
joe (st. george utah): hello thanks for taking the time to anser our ? is percy harvin better then crabtree?
Matt Mosley: He's certainly a game-breaking player, but give me Crabtree. I know what he is. I'm still not sure exactly what Harvin will be at this level.
Boone (Chicago): What about Det simply "forgetting" to get their #1 pick in and let the draft move on to say 3-4 before presenting their pick? Can they save some $$$ on a contract and still get a good player that helps them?
Matt Mosley: I've talked about that scenario before. I don't think anyone has the guts to make it happen. And the ridicule you'd suffer from people across the league (and your fan base) makes the strategy prohibitive. I can't believe our time is already up. Write your local Congressman and see if he'll provide for two chats per week. Thanks for stopping by. And congrats to my Rangers and Pirates for brilliant opening-day wins.
Steve (Long Island, NY): Matt, now that Plax got the ole' Heave-Ho, have the chances of acquiring Boldin or Braylon gone up significantly? (More so Braylon at this point I would think?)
