If you haven't stumbled across ESPN 2's "Overreaction Nation" package on the NFL page, now would be a good time to check it out.
Well-schooled in the art of reaching wildly premature conclusions based on little or no evidence, Hashmarks now presents 5 Knee-Jerk Reactions:
Oh, and when I'm finished, please feel free to join in the fun. The best knee-jerk reaction will appear on The Big Board tomorrow afternoon.
  • Knee-jerk reaction No. 1: Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is finished.
I know a lot of Eagles fans are starting to wonder about this with their team sitting at 0-2. McNabb has looked uncertain in losses against the Packers and Commanders. He's never been known for his accuracy, but he compensated with his ability to buy time in the pocket and make big plays downfield. Against the Commanders on Monday, he was checking down everything. His 10 completions in the first half averaged just over three yards.

Yes, I know it's way too early to say he's finished, but the knee injury could hamper him the entire season. With an effective group of receivers around him, I think McNabb could find a way to lead his team to the playoffs. Right now, former Michigan standout Jason Avant is the only receiver making plays, so I don't know how much this situation will improve. When someone like Steve Young starts noticing that McNabb's having a problem planting his foot before throwing, there's cause for concern. The Eagles aren't finished yet, but a loss to the Lions might do the trick.

  • Knee-jerk reaction No. 2: The Browns should sign Derek Anderson to a long-term extension immediately.
Anderson goes three-and-out on the Browns' first possession Sunday and then leads his team to scores on nine of the next 13 series in a 51-45 victory over the Bengals. "Nobody even asked about Brady Quinn in the press conference," gushed GM Phil Savage. Players talked about Anderson having a "gun" for an arm. And with the way this organization has handled its quarterbacks, a lucrative contract extension based on one day isn't out of the question. In reality, Anderson's one bad game away from being replaced by Quinn. But for now, let's allow Browns fans to bask in the glory of a nice win.

  • Knee-jerk reaction No. 3: LaDainian Tomlinson has obviously lost a step.
The reigning league MVP spent part of the offseason running up and down a huge sandpile in his backyard. So far, the conditioning work hasn't paid off. A year removed from rushing for 1,815 yards and scoring 31 touchdowns, Tomlinson is averaging 1.9 yards per carry after two games. He doesn't look nearly as explosive, but then, there hasn't been a lot of running room. Head coach Norv Turner had a little success with Emmitt Smith a few years back, so maybe he can help. Right now, Tomlinson appears to be running in sand.

  • Knee-jerk reaction No. 4: Tank Johnson will lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl.
Yes, the Cowboys will be a little more aggressive with staff pat-downs, but Johnson will be a perfect fit in this defense. Jerry Jones had so much faith in Johnson that he didn't even ask him about his transgressions. I'm sorry a lot of you guys missed Wednesday's group therapy session. After spending the day at Valley Ranch, I'm now convinced Johnson had a toy gun collection and his favorite hobby is dodge ball.

The Valley Ranch press corps is now being told Johnson was miscast in the Bears' 4-3 defense. He will apparently shine in Wade Phillips' magical 3-4 scheme. With this move, Jones is saying he was one player away from making a run at the Super Bowl.

  • Knee-jerk reaction No. 5: Mario Williams has made Texans fans forget about Reggie Bush and Vince Young
Ye of little faith. I tried to tell you that Mario Williams was poised to have a breakout season. Through two games, Williams has six tackles, two sacks and a fumble return for a touchdown. If you're scoring at home, that's one more touchdown than Bush has scored. Williams told us before the season that he wanted to break Michael Strahan's season-sack record (22.5). He needs to pick up the pace a little bit, but I think he'll get it done.

Now, please share your knee-jerk reactions.

Mario Williams, Michael Strahan, Reggie Bush, Jerry Jones, Tank Johnson, LaDainian Tomlinson, Emmitt Smith, Derek Anderson, Brady Quinn, Donovan McNabb

OK Mosley, we know your opinion of the Tank Johnson signing. Seriously, look at his blog. The 7 most recent posts all relate to him and they all pretty much say the same thing.

Is this a joke or what? One of his sacks was a coverage sack, and the other sack was when the QB ran into him.

His fumble return for a TD is a joke also. Someone else caused the fumble, and he was just lucky to be out of position so he could scoop it up.

You guys are missing the point of 'knee-jerk reactions.' Not that there's much point there to miss.

Another knack on Norv is that he's conditioning program stinks. Every year-his teams go through many injuries.
