Romo just spoke with the media…30th Jul, 2009for about 15-minutes after practice.

He answered several questions, and we should have the audio available sometime soon.

Second practice starts at 3:15pm, Wade Phillips press conference at 2:45pm.

Romo addresses the media

July 30, 2009 12:42 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

SAN ANTONIO -- Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo just spent about 25 minutes talking to reporters inside the Alamodome. At least 75 people converged on him, so I'll have to go listen to the tape to see what he said.

He acknowledged that he might become more vocal this season and he discussed his celebrity status. Asked if he remembers Bill Parcells saying he didn't want a "celebrity quarterback," Romo joked that Parcells was a "celebrity coach."

There was one question about Romo's "relationship" issues, but he quickly swatted it away. I just heard one of my favorite Dallas sports anchors record a tease saying, "At 5, we'll have news on Tony Romo's relationship."

Can't wait to hear what they come up with. Romo was also asked whether things felt different heading into this season, although T.O.'s name wasn't mentioned.

"I don't know if any year's different than another year in that regard," Romo said.

He said dealing with distractions is something that every quarterback in the league has to deal with.

"It's part of being good at what you do," he said.

OK, I'll be back a little later with news from the rest of the division. And remember that I'll be hitting all the northeast teams beginning Aug. 9. Thanks for your patience.

Tony Romo: I'm lucky to have Jason Garrett

12:05 PM Thu, Jul 30, 2009 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim MacMahon/Blogger Bio | E-mail | News tips

The hard feelings Tony Romo had about the offensive game plan after the Philly Flop have apparently long been forgotten.

"I'm lucky to have Jason (Garrett) around," Romo said today. "My relationship with him is very strong. I feel very fortunate to be able to have a guy like that that I get a chance to talk with and work with. He has a very good mind.

"I really enjoy just being around the guy. That makes it even more enjoyable to be there every day."

That's quite a turnaround from saying the Eagles "exposed" the Cowboys' offensive scheme and protection plans. Romo, who is fired up about a lot of the new wrinkles Garrett and the offensive staff installed this off-season, is now saying that the onus is on the players to execute.

"Basically, it's about us doing things the right way," Romo said. "As players, we need to go out and execute the plays. I think we've got a great chance. Coaches are putting us through great opportunities right now, so we're excited about that."

Romo media mania

I'll say this... to be Tony Romo, you have to have a strong fortitude and no claustrophobic issues. I don't think I could truly describe the swarm around him when he talked this morning, but you could imagine. Anyway, here are some tidbits from his talk:

Should you be more of a leader?

"I don't know if any year is any different from any other year. When you play the position that quarterbacks in the NFL play, here it's always all those things on the table. It's all part of playing the position. You either can handle all the stuff that goes along that's off the field and handle all the stuff off the field. Again, you're not going to last very long. Again, that's being good with what you do."

Better appreciation of public perception after this offseason?

"I'm going to go through it again for the next two months, three months, six months, however many years. There's always something new around the corner. It's just part of playing the position. There's no secret way of getting around it or of doing anything. Like I said, you're just lucky enough to play a game, you work as hard as you can to try and achieve your goals and fight like heck to do it. That's part of it."

How did your dad rank among your receivers this off-season, catching balls from you?

"He does a great job. His fingers are getting a little older now. I definitely wouldn’t be where I’m at without my dad, obviously for being a dad, but I think he’s caught way too many footballs in too much cold weather sometimes."

Were you hurt end of last season? Was that underplayed? And how hurt were you?

"No. Not underplayed. It’s the season. Like a quarterback, it’s just part of playing the position, you get banged up and you’re either tough enough to keep going forward or you’re not. It’s part of playing football. You just have to keep fighting and overcome nicks, bruises, injuries, blah, blah, blah, whatever."

We're in a lull between practices at the Alamodome. The Cowboys wrapped up their first practice in full pads about an hour ago; they'll go again later this afternoon.

Even though the players aren't tackling, they are hitting. Linebacker Keith Brooking talked a little about that: the players will give each other a good thud, but they don't tackle to the ground. Wade Phillips was asked at yesterday's press conference when the Cowboys would practice tackling, and he said (half-joking) that they would do that during preseason games. They won't practice tackling ... the risk-reward just isn't there.

Tony Romo did his first mass interview after practice; I wasn't involved in that one - Joe Trahan and Arnold Payne had it covered (along with about 40 of their closest friends ... it was like a mosh pit). Joe is putting together a story on Romo for the News 8 Update, tonight at 10. I'll have a little something on the rookies and what's on their mind as they enter the world of professional football.

Romo talks about leadership
July 30, 2009 3:05 PM

SAN ANTONIO -- Tony Romo drew some criticism Wednesday for not talking to the media on the first day of training camp. In fact, Cowboys Hall of Famer Michael Irvin led off his radio show Thursday by criticizing Romo for several minutes.

5209.jpg
Romo But after Thursday morning's practice, Romo took his spot in front of at least 75 reporters and cameramen. One of the offseason storylines has revolved around Romo's leadership abilities. Owner Jerry Jones and head coach Wade Phillips spent a good portion of Tuesday's state-of-the-team address defending Romo's leadership skills. Phillips, in particular, said that Romo's willingness to show up for every workout session helped set the tone for the offseason. Here's what Romo said when he was asked if he should be more of a leader in '09.
"I don't know if any year is any different from any other year when you play the position that quarterbacks in the National Football League play. Here it's always all those things on the table, it's all part of playing the position. You either can handle all the stuff that goes along [with it], and handle all the stuff off the field ... again you're not going to last very long [if you can't.]
Romo was also asked about all the criticism he took for how he handled the postgame news conference after the season-ending 44-6 loss to the Eagles.
"I talked about that a long time ago," said Romo. "We're kind of moving by last year. I think for us it's just about going forward and improving this year. It's about today, though. It's not about our first game, it's not about next week, it's about today and this practice. Did we improve right here, what we just did? I think we did. Now we've got to go back and do the exact same thing this afternoon and put forth another step forward. I tell the guys, you just keep stacking days together and you'll be able to add them up at the end of the year."
So does Romo feel any more pressure than usual heading into the '09 season?
"Yeah, there's never been pressure any other year," he said sarcastically. "It's always just a cakewalk normally. It's just another season. It's another season, another start. Like I said, optimism is very high around here. In the last few years, this is probably the first time that we feel not that we're being overlooked, but some of you guys have decided to take other teams in the division or in the conference and things of that nature. That's a different role, playing that kind of role -- not that that serves you good or bad. It's just a little different in that regard. That might the only thing I see as a little different."
Romo only fielded one T.O.-related question. Someone wanted to know if he'd talked to teammates who may have thought he played a role in the wide receiver's departure.
"No. Once again that's all people's hearsay, things of that nature," said Romo. "Internally, people don't deal with stuff that is a non-issue, per se, to some of the guys on the team, and that's just part of it."

So did that clear things up for you guys? "People don't deal with stuff that is a non-issue, per se. Hmmm. I guess he's saying his role in T.O.'s departure was way overblown -- and he might be right. I don't think Romo reached out to Jerry Jones and complained about T.O. Perhaps he let the word filter through others, but Romo tried to avoid the drama as much as possible.

I'll say this: Without T.O. here, this camp has a much different feel. The guy's been the biggest lightning rod in the league for years -- and I'd sort of gotten used to him being around. Do any of you guys miss seeing him in a Cowboys uniform?

The great Mike Jefferson is now wearing T.O.'s No. 81. And he's also wearing spandex tights. OK, we'll see what Wade Phillips has to say at 3:45 p.m. ET. Now, I'm going to take a peek at what's going on around the rest of the division.

Man I love Tony Romo, the way he handles things, and his outlook on everything.

Wouldn't trade him for any QB.

He really sounds like he learned from last year and matured with some of his responses today.

"It's about today though. It's not about our first game, it's not about next week, it's about today and this practice."

That's a far cry from last year when he said this after last seasons training camp:

"We can fast forward through this preseason, through the regular season, get to the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl or whatever and be there now. But so much of the fun and so much of the excitement is this whole process. I mean, it's the old saying: The journey is the funnest part."
