Romo Checks In With Hash
September 25, 2007 5:11 PM
Just spoke to Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo by phone for a few minutes. He's doing his best to keep the club's 3-0 start in perspective despite the fact his morning paper included a column comparing him to his childhood hero, Brett Favre.
Tony pointed to a 34-yard completion to tight end Jason Witten early in the second quarter as a catalyst for Sunday night's 34-10 victory over the Bears. Until that point, the Cowboys had gone three possessions without a first down, and Romo had thrown an interception.
"When we hit that pass, that's suddenly when I felt like we could start attacking them," he said of the first-and-10 play. "That's a great defense, but at that point, I felt like we were going to have some success."
There's been a lot of talk in this space about the fact that Romo's in the final year of his contract, but he once again said he's not thinking about it. He's smart enough to know that he's driving up his asking price each week.
And with Marc Bulger and his new six-year, $65 million contract headed to town this week, Romo will have a nice point of reference following Sunday's game. Romo has a tremendous amount of loyalty to the Cowboys because they thought enough of his upside to keep extending his contract.
But loyalty has its boundaries. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has indicated that Romo's not going anywhere, but it would behoove him to take care of Romo sooner rather than later.
On a sidenote, I find it interesting that Romo has always gone out of his way to defend Bears quarterback Rex Grossman. He's read and heard all the accounts of how badly Grossman played Sunday, and doesn't think it's entirely fair.
"I hate it for him," Romo said. "People are naturally going to make that comparison, but we have different styles."
And unfortunately for Bears fans, only one of those styles seems to be working right now.
Tony Romo, Marc Bulger, Jerry Jones
