Texas pro day exclusive: WR Limas Sweed
March 20, 2008 10:27 AM

The wide receiver position in this draft is still a crapshoot. We're still waiting for Oklahoma's Malcolm Kelly to hold a workout (April 9 in Norman), and some teams remain concerned about Texas receiver Limas Sweed's wrist injury that sidelined him for much of last season.

Last night, I visited with a couple of scouts who attended Sweed's pro day workout in Austin on Wednesday. The crowd was a little down this year because of floods in Dallas, where a lot of scouts have to change planes.

Here's what one veteran AFC scout had to say after watching Sweed, who ran anywhere from a 4.40 to a 4.54 in the 40-yard dash. I noticed the local newspaper in Austin reported a 4.40, but the scout I talked to had him at 4.51. Sweed also had a 37 1/2 vertical leap and a 10' 8" broad jump.

"That's not a bad time at all for a big guy like him (6-4, 215). He has that type of extra gear to go get it, and that's one of the things I really like about him. He needs to become a better route runner.

OK, I'm going to sound like I'm contradicting myself, but I'm really not. He's a good receiver in traffic, but he's not good at making contested catches. He simply doesn't use his body to shield the ball properly. The wrist injury happened in practice before the season, and he was never quite the same. I honestly don't think the injury is going to be an issue, though. They'll bring him in for the combine re-check next week and check it out.
Honestly, I don't have any receivers in the top 10 this year. No one will get taken until the bottom third unless someone's reaching. Personally, I'd rather have Sweed than Kelly."
Later today our panel of experts will handicap the receivers who are projected to go in the first round. As many of you know, it's not a long list.

Update: Bill Barnwell of Football Outsiders fame just informed me that the average 40-yard dash time for players 6-4 or over at the combine is 4.61. That obviously means Sweed had a pretty strong day on UT's indoor track.

I would like to see him there at 22, especially if we get Pacman Jones.

He's going to have to learn how to run routes at all before he can get better.

Considering OT's and alot of DL are that size, that doesn't make a 4.5 THAT impressive.

I really like Sweed thought he was very good at UT, don't think of him as Elite, but he can definitely make some plays. Wouldn't take him before #28 and maybe not until early 2nd round.

Word.

But as far as Sweed, every receiver needs time to develop unless your name is Randy Moss.

Calvin Johnson, for all the hype and genuine potential, wasn't exactly setting the world on fire last year and they aired it out A LOT.

Sweed was poised for a monster senior year at texas and his injury really has set him back. I would love to have him but he worries me cause he always seemed to develop so slowly at texas.

I just can't see why....Hardy couldn't separate from college CBs....he doesn't have the speed. He makes tough catches in traffic according to reports, but if he can't separate in college, he's going to have a tough time in the NFL.

You can get better at running routes...most NFL rookie WR's have to work on this, but when you have the extra gear and the big play ability to go with great size, you should be taken ahead of some guy who is more polished but doesn't have the ability to be special at the next level.

just my opinion.

I'm not really familiar with Sweed, but does he, in fact, have that extra gear?

I think that's a valid concern for any WR coming out of college but with 36 TD's in 26 starts he must be separating from someone. I can't imagine all of those TD's being in the red zone.

I wouldn't take him at 22 but I seriously doubt he'll be there in the 2nd when Dallas picks.

Sweed is simply not a first round talent. He has day one athleticism but lacks the WR skills to make him a first rounder. His routes are just okay. His hands are just okay and his overall performance was just okay.

When you watch a first round draft pick play football you know it. Sweed was invisible for much of his college career.

Jamaal Charles was the better player at UT and had more effect on the outcome of games.

I'd say Sweed is a round 2 guy.

I'd also say Hardy is a round 2 guy. He is big enough to be a great possession WR but his off-field stuff has to bump him down a bit.

This is really just a sux draft at WR imho.

Hardy is faster then Jarret. Separation can also be improved on by top coaching. Hardy did not get that at Indiana.
