Should the Cowboys replace Ken Hamlin at safety?

[+] Enlarge Scott Boehm/Getty ImagesKen Hamlin has recorded just one interception in the past two seasons.

It's hard to believe it has already come to this point with Hamlin, but it has. He played himself into a lucrative contract extension with a Pro Bowl season in '07. Now, he appears to be the only weak link on the Cowboys' defense. Quite simply, he doesn't make enough plays to warrant the money (six years, $38 million). And the Cowboys also have to make up their minds about Gerald Sensabaugh, a restricted free agent with a second-round tender. There are a lot of teams needing a safety (see the Eagles), but I think Jerry Jones will likely match an offer unless it's for ridiculous money. He's not going to let Sensabaugh join an NFC East rival.

I'm hearing that the Cowboys believe that safeties Nate Allen (South Florida) and Taylor Mays (USC) aren't that far apart in terms of talent. It seems like Allen has a lot more range from what I've seen, but starting a rookie at safety is a risky proposition. I think a better option might be Oshiomogho Atogwe of the St. Louis Rams. He's a restricted free agent who received the lowest-possible tender. The 29-year-old Atogwe is coming off a right shoulder injury, but he's been much more productive than Hamlin since '06 with 18 interceptions and 14 forced fumbles. Over that same period of time, Hamlin has nine interceptions and two forced fumbles.

When I talk to secondary coaches, they tell me that safety is the toughest position for a rookie to learn in the NFL. The Cowboys know what it's like to play without a reliable starting safety and it's not something they want to revisit. If you can't get a significant upgrade over Hamlin, you might be better off giving him one more season.

I really hope we are not stupid enough to think Mays is the answer.

As much as I want to get rid of Hamlin the worst thing we could do is take Mays.

How would you guys feel if Earl Thomas is sitting there and Dallas takes Taylors Mays over Earl Thomas????

I would be very disappointed then once I got over my disappointment I would hope like heck that the scouts were right and that Mays played closer to his Jr than how he played this past season.

I would feel like I did when we drafted Mike Jenkins, a player who I thought was incredibly overrated. I'd just shrug it off, look at the positives and trust our scouting staff and front office.

I would be pissed if that happens but I guess we roll with the scouts and coaches and see what happens from there.

So now Safety is the toughest position for a rookie to learn what happened to QB and WR? What bull.

from what i understand, the cowboys may view mays more as an ILB candidate in our defense than a FS (which is a relief in my mind, at least).

i still think that even if e thomas doesn't fall to us, we can draft a top cb who has the physical attributes to play fs. for example, a guy like c cook. he's about 6-2 and 212 lbs. and he's got coverage skills.

i'm sure that there are other guys who also fit the bill.

Seriously though. Does anyone think Mays is a FS? His tools scream in the box SS. His 40 time is impressive but safeties usually keep everything in front of them not running in a straight line with the wr.(which I don't think he can run with a wr anyway)

Honestly I wouldn't be upset if we drafted Mays I think with some hard work he has the potential to be a top class safety. He has all the physical tools just needs to put in the work. I would love for him to slide to us then draft him because he'd have that chip on his shoulder ya know ?

Hamlin has seriously underachieved since his original year here. he doesnt make plays on the ball, whiffs at tackles and doesnt force turnovers. Atogwe is a turnover machine.
I understand the position is a difficult one to learn but we need to move on imo, be it a FA (RFA or UFA) or a rookie from the draft pool.

I haven't been that impressed with our recent drafting. Nothing against Mays, Wade may have the perfect role for such a freak athlete. If we pick Mays in the first, I would hope that we did it after a trade down to grab more picks to work on upgrading our OL and WR corps.

I just don't see us being interested in Mays. If you notice, the last few years we've gone away from the freaky athlete types to the all-around football player types. Spencer wasn't anything that special physically, he was just strong and tenacious and produced in a big time conference. Felix wasn't impressive in the underwear olympics, but he averaged 10 yards a carry in the SEC.

Jason Williams and Bennett are about the only two "athlete" types I can think of that we've taken high lately, and even Williams was productive, even if at a lower level of competition.

I have mentioned Nate Allen few times as a sleeper pick for Dallas. He is a fit for Dallas.
