Iupati

INDIANAPOLIS -- The breakout player from Senior Bowl week was none other than Idaho guard Mike Iupati (U-pot-ee). And on Thursday, the enormous player (330) made an appearance at Lucas Oil Field to talk with reporters. I'm told that Iupati's weigh-in at the Senior Bowl caused a huge buzz in the room. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and son Stephen were seen craning their necks for a closer look at Iupati, according to eyewitnesses.

When Iupati's appearance was announced Thursday, reporters literally jogged over to the podium, which is saying something for this out-of-shape crowd. Iupati told the story of how his parents gave up good jobs in American Samoa when he was 14 in order to move to the United States. He said his family lived in his aunt's garage at one point because money was so tight. Now, Iupati stands to become a very wealthy young man.

The one negative thing that happened in Mobile, Ala., is that Iupati was caught holding several times during the actual game. He was asked about that Thursday.

"That's not me," he said. "I'm good at using a short punch and for some reason, I changed my game that day. I didn't want to get beat. But I have a very physical punch, so I'm not worried about repeating that mistake."

I believe the guy. We talked to a lot of offensive linemen today, but Iupati may have had the most impressive presence. He pretty much took over the entire podium, which explains why Jones and son were so interested in that weigh-in.

The funny thing is that at 6-5/6-6 at 330 lbs+ he doesn't look fat at all. You almost have to do a double take because he can appear "lean" by OL standards.

He just seems incredibly in shape.

It's probably alot of muscle.

Yup, must be.

I still think there's a shot he drops to 27.

The biggest hurdles, IMO, are Pitts, SF (with their 2nd 1st rounder), and maybe Philly.

But I think Philly has LB issues and SF needs an OT rather than an OG. I think it would take Iupati time to get the OT position down.

As for Pitts, I just don't see them taking an OG that high - though they need OL help for sure. But a guy like Pouncey may be more useful for them.

If we get this guy I am going to be as giddy as I have over a pick in a long, long time.

He would be a coup. Got to be excited seeing a 320 pound guy cracking back on linemen and esp. LBs.

Who was the last one?

I was shocked that we got Witten in the 3rd.

I don't think he looks lean but his physique reminds me of Leonard Davis. Just a huge, proportional mountain of a man.

Same here. At the risk of sounding insensitive, Samoans can play.

I too would be very, very happy if we were able to land him in the first round. That is one of the few positions we have where a good rookie could come in, start from day 1 and actually improve the team quite a bit. Having him in there next to Gurode and Davis on the other side would give Dallas a terrific interior OL.

The problem is: I don't think that he'll make it all the way to 27. Hopefully the Cowboys braintrust learned a lesson from the Unger ordeal last year. If they really, really like the guy that much, then find a partner and move up to get him. It shouldn't be that much that they'd have to move up.

It will be easily worth it if they like him as much as they seem to.

I doubt he falls past pitt at 18, which increases the likelihood of thomas falling to 27. I think theres quality guards in rounds 2/3 so I wouldn't be that disappointed, Thomas at 27 would make me much more 'giddy'.

Too lazy to do the research right now, but what's the highest position a guard has been taken in the last 10-15 years of the draft?

I don't think he'll fall to us personally though I would love it if he did.

I agree. Then grab John Jerry in the third.
