NFC East Q&A: What will it take to stop Commanders' run game?

Today's question:
The run game in Washington will be extra important this season (if the offseason talk is to be believed). The Washington Commanders have gotten bigger and, they hope, will have a stronger power game. How will your respective teams be at stopping the run?

Todd Archer, Dallas Cowboys: John is buying into the power of Bill Callahan here. Hard to argue since they took Brandon Scherff early in the first round. Callahan had a good run with the Cowboys that was made better when the team added first rounders in Travis Frederick and Zack Martin in his tenure. The Cowboys have been OK in stopping the run with Rod Marinelli's fly-to-the-ball approach. It's more about attitude than scheme. The Cowboys will benefit from the return of Sean Lee, who missed last year with a knee injury, a full offseason for Rolando McClain, the addition of Greg Hardy and the development of DeMarcus Lawrence. Will the Cowboys be a top-five run defense? Probably not, but they will be good enough to force teams to beat them through the air. And if the Cowboys' offense can produce points the way it did last year, then that will also help the run defense.

Dan Graziano, New York Giants: The Giants ranked 30th in the league against the run in 2014, so ... I guess they have to be better? I'm just not sure their offseason was as effective as they wanted it to be in terms of improving in that area. They set out in free agency to try to find a run-stuffing defensive tackle, inquiring about Dan Williams and others at the beginning of the market, but they had to settle for Kenrick Ellis. They moved up in the second round of the draft to take safety Landon Collins, who should help against the run, and their third-round pick, defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa, is said to be strong in that area as well. Jason Pierre-Paul is quite a good run-stopping defensive end, in addition to (some might say at the expense of) his pass-rushing abilities. But events of the past week cast doubt on how much Pierre-Paul will even to be able to play this year. And even in the best-case Pierre-Paul scenarios, a lot depends on the linebackers and the health of Jon Beason, which is always in question. I don't think run defense is likely to be a Giants strength in 2015.

Phil Sheridan, Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles have been solid against the run and their front seven should be as good or better, with the addition of linebacker Kiko Alonso to the mix. Of course, the Eagles have been so bad against the pass that teams often don't waste a lot of time and energy trying to run against them. Their secondary will be different in 2015 and has a chance to be better, too. Ideally, that will eliminate some of the deep throws that plagued the Eagles last season and force opponents to establish some kind of running game. If Washington plans to concede that point and voluntarily accentuate the running game, that is something the Eagles will welcome. It wasn't 5-yard runs that killed the Eagles in 2014. It was 50-yard passes.

Giants will struggle to run. I was higher on the Giants but less so now with the OL as it is.

Washington will have a run game just not as good as ours; unless Griffin can run and pass well this year. If so they will be a tough out.

Not sure about the Eagles. I suspect they will have a run game and be difficult to stop.

I also have no good read on the Boys run game. I suspect it will be effective enough to support Sc% and the passing game. We should be a top 6 team.

Washington and Philly have both fortified their running games to the extent that we'll be obliged to plug the run better and more consistently than we have in the past decade. With the added defensive talent, it's surely not unlikely that we'll be incapable of accomplishing that in the season about to get underway. We'll be just fine.

I hope the DL and LBers play as well as I'd like. Disappointed re: Ro

When did the Commanders run game be impressive that teams have to worry about it? im guessing this is more copy cat crap, since the Commanders really had 1 runner? Idk is it lazy journalism or nothing to really speak of the team? I dont remember their run game being scary for one, and two its Callahans first year, hes not doing anything impressive yet. Finally Dallas D will be tougher even if we lose Rolondo. Rod really has a great chance to take this defense to the next level and i think we are all witnessing that. Washington might get theirs, but im more worried of OBJ from the GIants getting his than i am of the NFCE star players getting theirs.

Third downs,,, While Dallas was very good at getting positive yards running the ball, they were excellent at finishing off on third down through the air. That's where Washington will or won't make a good running game pay off. I like RGIII but his development hasnt been great the last couple of years,,, and Dallas' pass rush hopefully comes through this year.

They don't have but two names and that is Morris and I count Griffin as a RB as well. IDK about the 3 others on their roster. They have Williams, Long, Scherrf and Moses with the latter probably moving inside. If they get a better C or Chester improves then they might have a good OL. I think Callahan will do well with their mostly power game in converting it to more zone blocking.

They generally are a tough out for the Cowboys but I hope to beat them like a red headed stepchild.

If there was a season i am generally happy to see, its this one coming up. im not just saying that be the rah rah crew. Its been a long time coming. This is the first time i feel dallas is complete on both sides. Before i wanted wins, now i want this team to start manhandling teams.

Looking forward to seeing this young, hungry DLine smack some people in the mouth. And having a healthy Sean Lee and Hitchens backing them up.

I don't see how the Eagles fortified their running game. Murray for McCoy is a push (at best) and the loss of both starting guards will hurt.

I'd take McCoy over Murray any day, even when Murray was leading the league. McCoy was/is an absolute beast.

Callahan is a terrific OL coach; however, the 1st year of his scheme is often not that good. Maybe the Skins can overcome that because they have some carry over from running zone when Shannahan was there, but in general the 1st year with a new zone OL coach can often be a setback year.

The Cowboys defense is probably better equipped to defend a Zone running team than a Power running team. Also, the Cowboys defense has a lot of practice time against Callahan's scheme.

My guess is that RG-knee won't do much read-option, but if he does the Cowboys are better equipped to defend it than at some points in the past. A key player in defending it usually the WLB. I'm certain Lee will play it as well as it can be played. The only issue might be Gregory at RDE reacting correctly to the Read Option, but Mincey then Hardy will likely be the starters there and will play most run downs.

No QB
No threat under center.

No running game.

Stop the run. Don't worry about pass.
