But drafting McCoy would have made Barber expendable. Besides Barber was nothing more than a bruising short yardage back. He made some espn highlights rio but he never rush for over 1k....he was not worth the 40m+ we spent on him.

Barber was legit. I had no problem giving him that money if you could guarantee me he could last in this NFL longer than he did. But his punishing style......I didn't think it was possible. Barber was far better than his stats were. He was a dominant running back in this league who the Cowboys chose to give limited carries and just use as a "closer". McCoy would've been a silly pick when we had invested as much as we did in Choice, Felix and Barber. Who btw, when all where healthy probably one of the best running back cores in the league.

In a way I agree but if you have a RB with a 1st round grade setting in the 2nd would have been a steal. And of those3 running backs Marion, Felix and Choice how many of those are still in the league ??

In hindsight, he was not worth the money he got...but he also was underpaid earlyu on. he energized the team and 2007 was our best team since the early 90s.

All I am saying is that a sport like football with 53 man rosters and a salary cap makes it imperative to manage the roster correctly. And if Barber and Felix are on the team...drafting LeSean McCoy would have never happened. The truth...again in hindsight...is that felix should have never been drafted..BUT....BUT because he was..passing on McCoy was inevitable. Plus...Garrett overruled Wade on Felix..and Garrett was the head coach in waiting. Wade wanted Chris Johnson. Garrett coveted the versatility in Felix.

Jerry Jones wanted Felix Jones... Dallas should have paid MB Michael Turner money.

If Barber and Felix are on the team...there is NO way you can draft LeSean McCoy

Yes they can. All they have to do is turn in the pick just like any other pick. If a team takes the BPA it tends to work itself out, especially when you have a mid 2nd round pick and you have the player rated as a 1st rounder. Obviously, that would have worked itself out, unless you prefer Robert Brewster and Jason Williams over McCoy.

Somebody would have traded for Felix or Barber or they could have just cut Barber and used that money to sign Free Agents at the positions that they did draft.

Back in 1970 Dallas had Calvin Hill, Walt Garrison and Dan Reeves in the backfield and still drafted Duane Thomas. I think your point is right on the mark.

Good point. That's the kind of thing that makes a message board interesting. I wouldn't have remembered that myself.

Exactly. They could have used Barber's money to sign a Free Agent to fill the "need" that didn't get filled in the draft. I don't remember if they had signed Barber to that contract yet, but either way they probably could have cut or traded him. Even at his peak, I don't think Barber would have been considered to have 1st round type talent.

The McCoy issue is not only a lesson in BPA, but also in drafting for the long term and not over-focusing on the immediate season.

The year before he was traded a team wanted to trade for him but JJ decline the same with Bennet

I think the lesson to learned here is this....Instead of trading down and accumulating a bunch of picks for fringe players....the better plan should have been to trade up for a few impact players that were sure to make the roster.

Considering how poor the entire 2009 draft was, that would have been a great plan. Or if Roy would have worked out at least we would have had something come from that draft.
