With the Cowboys off this week, we take a look at how their draft picks have fared.

Gavin Escobar, tight end

Pick: Second round (No. 47 overall)

Gavin Escobar
#89 TE
Dallas Cowboys

2013 STATS
  • Rec 4
  • Yds 65
  • TD 1
  • Avg 16.3
  • Long 25
  • YAC 13
What he's done: Escobar has been active for every game but he has yet to play more than 22 offensive snaps in any of them. He has played double-digit snaps just twice in the last eight games. He has four catches for 65 yards and a touchdown, but he has gone five games without a catch.

Season outlook: When he was picked in the second round, the Cowboys touted their move to a two-tight end offense that would be different than the experiments of years past with Anthony Fasano and Martellus Bennett. While "12 personnel," is the staple grouping, James Hanna has taken the bulk of the snaps behind Jason Witten.

Well, I thought they'd use this guy more this year. So I'll eat a little crow but not a lot. He's TBD. I have to say I'm not pleased with his contributions this year and that I put on him more than the failure of the 12 and 13. (I should say the failure of the offense)

Seeing more of the All-22 lately has shown me Romo isn't hitting wide open guys. I haven't seen enough to really start throwing darts but I've seen enough to raise my radar and try to look more. So please no 'why jobber, you've gone to the dark side' posts. Please.

I wonder if it's because we have all of our receivers reading the coverage of the defense and nobody really knows what anyone is for sure doing.

Something that has been bothering me about Romo is his proclamation early in the season about how he has changed his throwing motion.

I think he has become "gun shy" about possibly throwing an int. I also think that someone has coached him this year to just go to the play that was called and throw to the receiver that the play was designed for. Romo used to be at his best when he "just played his game".

But he gets so much criticism when he does throw Int's that I feel that he does not want to take the chances that he used to do early in his career. Romo, just like most QB's are going to throw Int's, that is just part of the game. But, Romo has also thrown Int's in games that he has dominated.

So, IMO, someone on the coaching staff may have told the offense/Romo, let's don't get cute, let's try and play fundamental football and go execute the play as designed, and stop any "free styling " which is really how Romo plays.
Yeah, his freestyle is going to cause an int here and there, but if he is turned loose like he used to be, he sure looked a hell of a lot better than he does now.

I guess we'll be drafting a tight end in the second round next year. Sigh.

Yes, but I don't think it's related to his throwing motion. The coaches have driled it into his head to avoid the INT and then the media makes it worse when he does throw one.

I posted this after we drafted Escobar:

"Personally, in dealing with positions such as center, rb, and te, I would never use a high draft pick when I have an All-Pro playing. That's why i didn't like the Bennett pick years ago, he won't have time to develope as long as Witten is here.

If you are going to draft one it should have been Lacy, especially with the injuries Murray seems to suffer every year. Witten has been pretty much injury free his whole career".

That is kind of what I was getting at. And, I think that is throwing Romo off his game, and what he really does best.

I said "throwing motion" because I think Romo may have said that because he did not want to come out and say that he is going to try and throw less ints, which he has. But, he is not the same...

I have no idea why they don't have him on 1 side and Dez on the other. Just throw it to the one with single coverage or the one being covered by the lesser defender.
Too simple for cutesy pants garret

The Cowboys knew Escobar would struggle as a blocker as a rookie
Makes me laugh when fans rail on him for his lack of blocking skills when they know that wasn't what he was drafted for.
