Matt Williamson: (11:55 AM ET ) Hey everyone. MW here. Lets get started a little bit early on today's chat.

Blake (Freeport, IL): Do the Bears have a snowball's chance of actually picking up an impact RB from free agency? Travis Henry? Shaun Alexander?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:02 PM ET ) Actually, I wrote about this right after Benson was let go. Neither Henry or Alexander is a good fit in my eyes. Alexander is just another one dimensional RB who doesn't run real hard-like Benson. Henry is a one dimensional RB who has off the field issues-like Benson. However, Kevin Jones is intriguing here. Could be a very good 1-2 punch with Forte. Sprinkle in some Wolfe and they might just be fine at RB-if Jones is healthy now.

Gray (Chicago): Boo to both Henry or Alexander, what about LaMont Jordan?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:02 PM ET ) I like Jordan more than Henry and especially Alexander, but Jones would be my first choice.

Mad Mike (Houston): Matt: Will we see some surprise cuts between now and training camp due to the roster limits? Any idea who? Matt Jones? Thanks..........MM

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:04 PM ET ) There certainly will be and that is almost its own final wave of free agency where teams can add one more vet to head into the season. Tough to predict, but a few names that come to mind are Jones for sure, Najeh Davenport, Jordan, etc. Who else? Help me out here on some guys who could be shown the door...

Jared (Denver CO): What up Matt, thanks for the chat? Is it me or is Chad Johnson putting on a perfoming act of made up injuries to get out of cincy?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:04 PM ET ) We have no idea of knowing that, but my guess is that if he had been traded before the draft that his injuries would not seem so bad. This is the time of year for antics and posturing.

nick (iowa city ): Minnesota Vikings.....most improved team? What are the chances Tarvaris improves tremendously? He's only played one year.

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:05 PM ET ) Not the slightest bit of a TJax fan here. If they did have a solid QB, this would be a true contender. In the meantime, I think they have the best D in the league and will be able to run the ball. Good combination!

Josh (Butler,TN): Matt, What about the Colts do you think they have enough to beat the patriots?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:07 PM ET ) I worry that Indy's D will drop a bit this year and Sanders and Freeney's durability is a concern. That O will be as great as ever-with or without Marvin. Both teams you mentioned are obious heavyweights-great coaching, great QBs, playmakers all over the place.

Matt (NJ): Matt, I have been reading that david carr probably won't make it to Giants training camp. Looks like its gonna be Wright, JLoad, Woodson and Eli

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:07 PM ET ) Wouldn't be much of a loss. That guy has really been terrible when given the chance.

Mark [ Somerset,Ky]: Is this Marvin Lewis last year if the Bengals dont make the playoffs?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:08 PM ET ) On the hot seat for sure and deserves to be. Not sure what the cutoff with be in terms of his win totals, playoffs, etc, Also, that organization is tough to predict-needless to say.

John (WI): How long will it take for a team to pickup Benson? Any teams you see giving him a chance (DEN, HOU, ARI)?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:09 PM ET ) I don't many teams with major RB needs right now. I would guess that Benson, Alexander and Henry will need to wait until some RBs get hurt in training camp.

Scott (Brewtown): Even though the Packers lost Favre, the doom & gloom given by most prognosticators as to their chances this year seems a bit overkill. The Pack has a very talented team and a young one at that. I still believe they are the team to beat in the north. Am I crazy?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:10 PM ET ) I am with you Scott. Let's not write Rodgers off yet either! This team has weapons and a very good D.

Wendell (Liverpool, UK): Mr. Williamson: Are the Chargers in trouble if anything happens to LT?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:11 PM ET ) Oh yeah. No question about it. I can't trust the other RBs on that roster right now. However, that division and SD's schedule is pretty easy. They could still get into the playoffs without LT, but wouldn't be an elite team. The guy makes it all happen. Superstar.

Josh (Butler,TN): Matt, How does this sound Colts and Cowboys in the Super Bowl? And how big of a lose is Strahan to the Giants?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:13 PM ET ) Not ready to predict the Super Bowl yet and honestly, there isn't one team that stands out to me. Those teams are as good of a bet as any and yes, Strahan will be missed. Anytime you lose a great player, it is substantial, but with Kiwi coming back and Tuck as established as he is, NYG will still have an exceptional front.

Kyle (OH): In reading a recent article out of St. Louis, it appears that the Rams decided on Chris Long because he fits Haslett's unique defensive scheme...so what happens if Haslett moves on or gets fired? Wishing we had Dorsey...

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:14 PM ET ) I like both players an awful lot, but felt that Dorsey was clearly the best player in this draft. I can't bash STL for picking Long though, as Carriker looks like a solid 3 Technique and DE was a major problem. Good point about Has moving on though.

Dan (Portland): Matt, do you think the Skins will look at signing Bentley to shore up the O-Line? Thanks.

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:15 PM ET ) I think a lot of teams will be interested in Bentley if he proves that he is healthy enough to contribute. Wash and Pittsburgh were two teams that popped into my mind immediatly. Plenty of others though.

Larry (New York): Hey Matt, keep dissing the Commanders, just like you did last year...you were wrong last year and you'll be wrong again this year...the NFC East will come down to the skins and boys.

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:16 PM ET ) Okee dokee. They will be 4th in the NFC East. 4th.
:lmao2:

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH): Why did the Browns release LeCharles Bentley? They paid him $16 million dollars and the second he gets healthy they grant him his release?!?!?! If I were Phil Savage, there is no way I would have granted Bentley's release.

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:17 PM ET ) They moved on without Bentley and have the best OL in the league. Fraley is very important and Clev can use Bentley's $$$ on other players to resign on their present roster. Also, they know much better than we do as to just how healthy Bentley really is.

Geoffry Beene (LA): my freind is a die hard raiders fan, will i be able to make fun of him alot this year just like the last couple seasons?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:18 PM ET ) Yes, but progress is being made there. I really worry about Oak's passing game and ability to stop the run on D though.

Mark {Somerset Ky]: What rookie will have the most impact right away?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:19 PM ET ) Leaning toward Jonathan Stewart assuming that he is fully healthy when camp starts. Good fit in that revamped O. Forte and Kev Smith are others who will get plenty of carries as a rookie. Jake Long of course as well.

Brad(NM): Hey Matt..why haven't the Bills extended both Evans and Peters to long-term deals? Are they really that cheap?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:20 PM ET ) Doesn't make much sense to me and I would guess that they will get deals done with both players before the start of the season. Buff really has no choice in this matter-esp with Peters.

Chad (Savannah, GA): What about Ellis for DROY?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:21 PM ET ) I do think he will make a huge impact, but DT is a REAL tough position to win that award at. Think LBs who make tons of tackles (often on bad teams) like Willis and Ryans. Rivers? Mayo-not a bad team, but could make a ton of plays.

Steiny (NYC): Do you think the AFC East has the best group of running backs in Laurence Maroney and Sammy Morris (New England Patriots), Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson (Buffalo Bills), Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams (Miami Dolphins) and Thomas Jones and Leon Washington (New York Jets)?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:22 PM ET ) Let me think that over real quick. Immediatly leaning towards No, because that group doesn't overwhelm me. AFC West has a couple of big time talents. NFC East as well.

Phil (Cleveland): Why does the media just dismiss the chance that Troy Smith could be the Ravens starter? All reports seem to be that he has been very impressive.

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:24 PM ET ) Have heard the same things, but I think Smith has backup QB written all over him. He seems like the type of guy that could come off the bench and really ignite a team, but with his size and so-so accuracy, I am not convinced that he can be a starter week after week.

Mike (Boca Raton): the steelers seemed to get excellent value in rounds 1 & 2. i was really impressed with the character of both mendenhall and sweed. what is your book on them?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:25 PM ET ) Totally agree. It was like they were both too good to pass up. Depite line needs, they had to pounce on both players.

Kyle (OH): How about Devin Thomas of the Rams as a surprise ROY...oh wait, that's right...

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:25 PM ET ) Funny-He would have been my pick over Avery as well. Best WR in the draft.

Nathan (Lincoln, Nebraska): how far do you think the Seahawks go? do they win it all?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:26 PM ET ) I don't have them making the playoffs and I love that D. Really worried about the weapons on O. The OL isn't great. I sense a tough year for Holmgren's last.

Kyle (OH): Can a team like the Patriots resurrect Benson's career now that he is hopefully humbled from his release...or is he just not talented enough to be an NFL starter?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:28 PM ET ) He is talented enough to play in this league, but as a starter? Not sure about that. Rotational guy? Sure. Still, I want to see more heart. Run harder. Want it. If that doesn't change, he could have all the talent in the world. Also remember, he doesn't help on 3rd downs or special teams. Limited.

John (WPB, FL): Browns or Steelers? With both facing tough schedules, both 10-6 last year, and their additions, which one do you see as having the leg up on winning the AFC North?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:29 PM ET ) I picked the Steelers to win the North. The schedules are brutal-esp for PGH, but I just trust that team more, esp at QB. I only see one team coming out of that divsion this year and I will go with the Steelers.

Chad (Savannah, GA): Don't you love people picking the SB in June? What are the Saints chances of winning their division or at least getting wild card spot?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:31 PM ET ) Yeah, that is brutal. I like NO in the South. The D has to be better. Ellis will help. Gay was a nice pickup. As was Vilma. That O will score points-always.

John (Cincy): Do you agree with the Bengals signing Peko to an extension?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:31 PM ET ) For sure, esp with them flirting with going to a 3-4. NTs are real tough to find and Peko could be adaquate in that regard. Good young player.

Josh (Butler,TN): Matt, What do you see from the Titians do you think Vince Young will be good this year?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:32 PM ET ) Not a believer. Really worry about his accuracy and am not convinced that it will drastically improve. Also, Tenn continues to ignore their WR need. I see Tenn going backwards this year.

Wes (Atlanta): Matt, the Falcons HAVE to sign a DT or 3 after cuts, correct? I don't have any big expectations this year, but without someone to stop the run up front, they'll be worse than last years Dolphins..

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:32 PM ET ) Got that right. DTs don't grow on trees though...

Jake (NY): Any chance NCAA all-time, all-division leading rusher Danny Woodhead form Chadron State College makes the Jets roster?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:33 PM ET ) Maybe the practice squad. Pretty crowded backfield with T Jones, Washington and Chapman.

Chaz (Scranton, PA): For the last few years, the team that was last in the NFC South the previous year has won the division the next. Does this mean Atlanta has it locked up already?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:34 PM ET ) Oh yeah, they will roll right over those other teams. What I like especially about Atlanta will be their superior DT play and fantastic OL. Yeah right.

Mike (Boca Raton): after year 1 reggie bush was the greatest thing since sliced bread, after year 2 he was a bust... after year 3 will people finally realize that--with rare exception--rb is the most overrated position in football?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:35 PM ET ) That does kinda sum it up. I do think Bush will be more productive this year than last, but speed isn't enough in this league. Everyone chasing him is quite fast as well. This is why I really was rough on Oak for taking McF over Dorsey. They will regret it.

Mike (Boca Raton): did you hear nyj rb thomas jones laughing from pittsburgh when the release of cedric benson was announced?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:36 PM ET ) Mike, I did hear that. Chuckling loudly indeed.

Rick (Denver): I think Denver Broncos should take a chance on Cedric Benson. Him and Selvin Young could make a good 1-2 punch, or at least better than a Young/Pittman/Torain rotation.

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:36 PM ET ) Not an aggressive enough runner for their tastes. They want T Davis or even Mike Anderson to pick a hole, hit it hard and get what they can get.

Samer (Austin, TX): Do you think Philly is good enough to win the division this year?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:38 PM ET ) Brutal division and I do have them coming in 2nd as a WC and picked them to go to the last Super Bowl-so I am a believer. Winning that division is brutal though. Gotta lean towards Dallas.

Justin (St Paul): Here again: V Young DID lead his team to the playoffs in the AFC this year. He had a winning record. TJax don't like, VY don't like, T Smith back-up at best. Hate to say it but whats the theme?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:39 PM ET ) Crushed David Carr as well. I don't like bad QBs. I do like Smith, just not as a big time starter. I bash P Rivers quite a bit. I think Hasselbeck is a bit overrated. I don't care if they are green, purple or orange. I like who I like.

Majeed: M-Dub, Fins lost 6 games last year by 3 pts or less so they just didn't know how to finish. Think Sparano and co can fix that this year?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:41 PM ET ) Most importantly, they will improve the attitude of the entire organization. Will slowly teach them how to win. However, without a passing game and with major holes on D, this will be another rough year for the Phins. Long project that will take time.

Jimbo (NC): What do you expect out of Jake Delhomme this year? Can he return to form?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:42 PM ET ) Not going to play doctor and I know no QB has ever come back from T John surgery, but I do like Delhomme a ton this year-esp from a fantasy perspective. That O should be excellent. S Smith is ready to blow up. J Stewart could have a big year too.

Larry (Pasco, WA): Matt, You do bash P. Rivers a lot. When are you going to give him some love?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:43 PM ET ) In one of my recent chats, I did give him props-mostly for what he did in the playoffs. I question his ability to move well and don't think he will ever be a great thrower. Not a fan of his body language or whining when things go wrong. That team is LOADED. But he worries me.

Mike (Boca Raton): No question that cle qb derek andersen had a great year, but he seemed to tail off a little at the end of the year. do you see him picking it back up in 2008, or do you think he has a little tommy maddux in him?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:45 PM ET ) I am not a believer in DA one bit. Also has very poor accuracy and takes far too many chances that he shouldn't. That O is set up for any QB to succeed and while I give him credit for his early season success, I am saying right now that Quinn should be the starter and will take that job over sooner than later.

Matt Millen (Detroit): Will I have a job after this year?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:46 PM ET ) Not sure how you can. You can't judge drafts right after they happen, but I wasn't fond of this past one for the Lions. Times are not getting any better and there are a LOT of long term quesions with that organization.

chauncey (teaneck): so who do you think is the best qb in the league?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:47 PM ET ) Peyton and Brady are tied for #1. Flip a coin. All time greats. Maybe the best two who ever lived when it is all said and done. Not sure you need a scout's opinion for that one though.

Baseball Fan (Detroit): I'm a Lions fan. Please cure me.

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:47 PM ET ) I am from Pittsburgh and your Wings beat up on my Penguins...so I can't feel for ya Bro.

Chad (Savannah, GA): Rumors out of Raiders camp is that Jamarcus Russell is making some sick throws. I know it is OTA's but could he be the suprise QB of this upcoming season?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:49 PM ET ) He will make sick throws. In fact, he will make throws that no one else in the league can make. However, there is much more to playing that position than having a great arm, which is an understatement for Russell's right arm. I worry about his abilit to read defenses right now and move in the pocket. He didn't play all that much at LSU remember. Also that passing supporting cast isn't real enticing. Worry about the pass pro.

Larry (Pasco, WA): Matt... The QB question should have been, Who do you think the best QB in the league is not named P. Manning or T. Brady?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:49 PM ET ) Now that makes more sense. Big Ben. Not to sound like a homer, but I really don't even think it is close any more.

Jared ( Denver CO): Matt why is it everyone gets upset over P Rivers critisism, he is a good QB but put him a team with out as much talent as SD and he is mediocre at best!

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:50 PM ET ) Curious how Rivers would do with Atlanta or KC. That can be said for a lot of QBs, but someone like Roethlisberger or Brees makes everyone around them much better and can thrive in less than perfect situations.

Finn (Seattle, WA): Seahawks won't make the playoffs? Hasselbeck overrated? Get ready to eat a steaming pile of crow after the seasons over.

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:51 PM ET ) Just a pinch overrated, as a system QB. LOVE the D, but don't trust Hass' supporting cast.

JD Minny: Whos pickin 1st overall in 09?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:51 PM ET ) ATL. KC? Give me ATL.

Matt (Boston, MA): Do you think the Patriots should pick up Alexander and use him like they used Dillon?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:52 PM ET ) As a big strong battering ram to wear defenses down? Nope-that isnt Alexander's game.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH): Is this the season Matt Leinart finally comes through for the Cardinals? The division is one of the weaker in football (St. Louis & Seattle are good though) and it'd be nice to see the Cardinals make the playoffs for a change.

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:53 PM ET ) Warner played well last year and could get the call if Leinhart doesn't work out early on. I picked Zona to win that division by the way.

John ( Wyoming).: Matt, Rothlisburger plays like Elway to me, I watched Johnny Ballgame for his entire career and I swear Big Ben has eyes in the back of his head ala Elway.

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:54 PM ET ) Gifted in that way. Great physical tools too. Great size. Great feet. Great arm. Only getting better. Just eliminate the year after his accident and look at those three seasons in this league. Quite impressive.

Joe San Antonio Tx: Texans thoughts? predictions? The running back situation?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:56 PM ET ) I am convinced that Houston will be a very good team on the ground this year, but I am just not sold on who will carry the rock. I know that might not sound logical, but Gibbs will make that OL a very good run blocking unit. C Taylor is one to watch though-impressive in limited opportunities. I still can't see Hous making the playoffs this year. 3rd in the South.

Wes (atlanta): Matt, I have to ask, is a line of Blaylock, Baker, Forney, McClure and Weiner that much worse than anyone else?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:58 PM ET ) Zero star power. In fact, none of those players might be even considered an above average starter for their position. Depth is really a worry as well and once an injury occurs, it will really get bad. I hear ya, that fivesome isn't awful, but they wil also be learing another new system and I just see problems ensuing.

Barnettej (Charlotte): Will we Detroit Lions fans see Calvin Johnson be that explosive player he was in college?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (12:59 PM ET ) Mark this down. Two years from today Calvin Johnson will be one of the top 3 WRs in the game. I love the guy and actually, he was quite impressive last year all things considered with his back, being a rook, etc.

Rick ( Seattle): My top 5 young QB's 1. Rothlisberger 2. Palmer 3. Manning 4. Cutler 5. Rivers you thoughts?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (1:00 PM ET ) Not a bad list. I would put Romo in there ahead of Manning, Cutler and Rivers.

Shawn (Jamestown,NY): Do you see the Buffalo Bills making the playoffs this year?

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (1:02 PM ET ) The D will be much better. Much better. The O will improve, but I still don't trust the weapons outside of Evans. Still not sold that Edwards is anything to write home about either. I see them competing for a wild card spot down to the end, but ending up 8-8ish.

sn2.gif
Matt Williamson: (1:02 PM ET ) Everyone, this was fun, but I gotta go. Enjoy your weekend. Take care.

I would put Romo ahead of Rothlisberger in this list. I know Rothlisberger has a Super Bowl ring, but I could have sworn Romo performed better that Rothlisberger last season.

Lot of football fans/analystslys will hold it against Romo that he was undrafted (they also remain enthralled with big QBs with great arm strength), is 0-2 in the playoffs & has only been a starter for 26 games. With another season of high level play ending with at least 1 playoff win but hopefully a SB win, that will dramatically change. Frankly, I've the QBs cited and really only impressed by Brees. Ranking Cutler, Rivers & Eli above Romo is a joke; and I'd take Romo over Rothsenberger any day of the week and 3 times on Sunday.

To put Romo ahead of Peyton Manning is just stupid. I like Romo but if I could replace him with PManning, I'd make that switch in a New York minute.

Edit: Aah they were talking about Eli... I didn't catch that and yes I would put Romo above Eli, Brees, and Cutler.

I would jump on this if Carr becomes available. I really think that Garrett could fix him. Lord knows, he took a lot of punishment in Houston. Maybe someone can convince him that he won't get killed if he stays in the pocket long enough to deliver a pass.

Carr > Johnson

I think once a QB breaks he never gets fixed. That horrendous time in Houston broke Carr. Forget him - he is done.

I hate to say it but right now you have to take Roths over Romo. I am NOT using the SB since Roths stank the place up. BUT he has won playoff games and seems to be getting better. Would I take a swap- NO. BUT if I am trying to be impartial you have to give the edge to Roths right now.

Carr's also a whiner-which was his undoing in Houston. Plus he sucked, period.

I would whine too, if I was getting knocked on my butt a hundred times a season. Ever see a dog that gets beaten cringe? Carr kind of reminds me of that. Maybe with some protection, and meaningful psychotherapy, he could be productive.

no kidding, Romo is way more aware than Rothlesberger
