I think you make good point. Outside of 1st round Dallas really hasn't been good in draft. If Dallas wants to continue this hands-off approach in FA they will need to do better job in middle and later rounds in draft. That helps to explain this new hire.

You're right. I posted some tables re avg results in several rounds and we have underperformed in the later rounds the last six years if you dissect our results out. It may be worse longer term as I only looked at those years. I don't see it being better but that's a guess.

We have operated in an overall talent deficit compared to the average team for some time with the notable exception of rds 1-3 one being very good lately.

You'd expect to get a starter in day three 80% of the time and we are closer to 20% over the last six years. That's a relatively short statistical range but still concerning. We are getting snaps but those stats can be misleading. If you aren't getting starters then you are getting journeymen seeing more snaps than usual. I just don't have the time to sit down and compare two or three more successful clubs round for round with us over the years including looking at snaps by the depth vs the quality of those snaps.

Overall our record says a lot to that. While I see an improvement in talent overall we haven't seen the result so far to back it up other than 2104.

Sorry to digress but I wanted to clarify those stats a bit from the other day when I had more time.

thanks for doing that work. I always suspected they tail off after first few rounds. Seems early picks are saving them because they have not relied on FA much at all. Also having Romo probably hides those drafting deficiencies as well.

YW and thanks for noticing. I think Romo elevates the offense. Any elite QB does though.

On offense we could use another and I could make a case for two clutch WRs. I think one would do the job if they would move away from Witten some and put a fair share of those opportunities towards Beasley who is fairly underrated and even more so misused. They need to use Hanna and Escobar more as well. I hope they just don't throw their way because they aren't running good routes etc. OL is good with if they address swing tackle and G/C. RB is okay but could be better. I've given up on FB.

It's defense that needs attn starting at DL the DB then LB. We could upgrade this year esp if we get a pass rush.

Freeman and coleman. Looks like he can find RBs in the 3rd\4th rounds. Yeah us. We need a RB.

We found Murray in the 3rd.

Could of had a decent back last year if we wanted to draft one

I brought this up last week from 2009-2013 We drafted 41 players not including UDFA of the 41 drafted in that 5 year span 8 are currently on our roster had we not signed Mo ( 1 yr contract) or Wilbur we would have had only 6.

I hope that Vital gets us back to mining UDFAs like we used to.

The last two years have been especially awful in that regard, where in previous seasons that was a productive bunch (Bailey, Beasley, Church, Leary, Jones).

I guess we are being introduced to Lionel Vital like we were to Jeff Ireland, Tom Cikowski and Will McClay before him. Tells me that McClay will be a GM somewhere in about 2 years and Vital will be our next "That guy who runs stuff but doesn't have the GM title"

Just sayin that we rarely get many names of scouts and FO hires, but when we do,it has tended to be name that we then starting hearing more and more about... And inevitably they become "the guy" for a while. Right now, that's McClay. Two years from now? We'll see.

Call it a zany prediction ;)

(Edit. I also just noticed that I inadvertently replied to your comment. T'was supposed to be just a general reply, )

All I can say is I like this resume. Hard to know these types unless you're an insider.

Like does he exist?

Will McClay is just a story the Cowboys tell their fans so they will behave.

Like, " If your good and support the team, Will McClay will give you a good draft. And if you dont support the team, you will get a stocking full of Geoff Swain"
