I think Garrett's lame-duck status has very little to do with Garrett. It has to do with the players. Some of them, not all. Some guys are just going to view Garrett as a guy that "will be gone after this year, so I can tune him out now".

This is an instance where I give the nod to the 'majority'. And the majority of teams would never have a lame-duck coach. Even the poorly managed and run NY Jets wouldnt do it with Rex Ryan.

It all depends on how Garrett is perceived in the locker room.

Guys who don't really like Garrett or are indifferent may react as you describe.

But players who really do like Garrett will likely fight and play harder for him. Jason Witten said when it was announced that Garrett was staying said he was happy about that and essentially that the guys in the locker room would do anything for Garrett. If this is true, then having Garrett in the last year of his deal may be a motivating factor for the players.

But since we aren't in the locker room, how the players will react to Garrett's contract status is anybody's guess.

Why do people expect players to bad-mouth their coaches to the media?

"Hey Witten, what do you think of Garrett not being fired?"
"O hell no.. He wasn't fired for how bad he was? Man, this sucks. Put that in writing."

You're right. Players don't tend to badmouth coaches until they're gone. That said, if you go by what's happening on the field, they play hard for him. Much of the on-field talent is limited. The defense still gives me nightmares, tthey play hard with what they have.

If they give up on him like they did Wade, then the proof will be in the pudding. As it stands, no matter the fans dislike of the man, he seems to own the lockerroom.

I think 'giving up' on Wade is a rather subjective claim, considering he got them two division titles and a play-off win. It's not like they weren't playing hard. If the loss at Green Bay was the standard, then they also said that the Cowboys gave up on Jason against the Saints and Bears.

Agreed...Team needs to move off 8-8, one way or another. Either lose alot or win alot, but get off 8-8. I also believe that if he got off the 8-8 thing, had a true winning season, 11-5, 12-4, with a playoff berth, then it'll warrant a consideration for an extension. But if it's 9-7, 10-6, I prefer the team to just move on, playoff berth or not. 1-2 extra wins do not signal progress...at least for me.

Excellent points...............I agree.

None of this 9-7/10-6 sneak into the playoffs and get curb stomped for an extension.................We need to see a 11 or 12 win season with at least 1 playoff win to even consider giving "coach in training" an extension

I'd like to see a bit of that out of Garrett, too. They can toss out that reverse, double-reverse, whatever play he got in his playbook, tho. That thing hasn't worked EVER.

But a flea flicker would be awesome. A little trickery here and there, get outside the numbers a bit, and just go with your gut sometimes would be cool, too.

The double reverse/reverse stuff is always hilarious. It's like the one play Garrett likes to run when he's feeling, as the british say, "cheeky"... but it NEVER works!

You're right. Of course @WoodysGirl has a point, too. The answer lies twixt the two. My measure is progress and I've been frustrated with the inability to adequately gauge the job we're doing with the plethora of injuries. Sick of that story. Turn the channel.

Injury excuse gets laughable in year 4...........time to get it done or move on.

IMO, the overall point is that Rivera entered last season very much on the hot seat, turned the team around, got them to the playoffs, and got a contract extension.

Garrett enters the 2014 season under very similar circumstances. He would likely need to achieve what Rivera did in order to be retained. The coaching circle is small, maybe JG can go pick Rivera's brain to see what he did different. *shrug*

He is picking up peoples brain like Duke Head coach (coach K), Jimmy Johnson but not sure what he learned. I have soured on JG, so I am not sure if he didn't pickup what needs to be done, there is anything else he can learn
