Wilson sets news conference to thank Denver fansBy John Clayton
ESPN.com

Denver Broncos linebacker Al Wilson scheduled a news conference Friday to announce he is being released by the Denver Broncos after eight seasons, sources said.

Wilson
Wilson called a 4 p.m. ET meeting with the media in Denver to discuss his future, which will not include the Broncos, the team that made him a No. 1 draft choice in 1999 and allowed him to grow into the leadership role on playoff caliber defenses.

Wilson leaves the Broncos as a four-time Pro Bowl player and one of the top defenders in franchise history.

Last month, the Broncos tried to trade him to the New York Giants for a third-round choice. That trade didn't happen because he failed a physical. He had back problems last year along with a thumb injury. Wilson's rights returned to the Broncos, who were, at the time, seemingly willing to keep him on the roster.

With a $5.2 million salary and a $600,000 roster bonus, Wilson didn't fit into the Broncos salary cap after a busy offseason. His release will save the Broncos $1.63 million.

Wilson wanted to hold a press conference to thank the Broncos and the fans for their support through his NFL career.

I actually don't think it would be bad to bring him in and let him compete with Bradie James inside.

Wilson is a pretty good MLB but I don't think he would be a good fit here. He's a bit small for a 3-4 MLB at 6'0" 240 and while he is a solid tackler he's not a big play guy. He is good in coverage though so it wouldn't be a bad move.

I wouldn't be upset if we signed him but I don't see it happening.

If we signed half the players everybody suggests we'd be in trouble. It'd be a team comprised entirely of cast offs from other teams.

if he is healthy he is a good player. but he is not healthy.i think a back problem is something you just don't want to mess with

I have lived in Denver and seen Wilson play.

First off, he is a very talented linebacker, at least in the 4-3, but that's all i've seen him play.

I think he could do well in a 3-4 system in the position that Ayodele plays.

However, with his recent injury problems you have to be concerned.

Also, i am not sure how much he would cost to bring in, and we already have Bradie and Akin signed for hefty contracts, and we probably shouldn't have an expensive backup.

Because back problems never completely go away.

The fact that he failed a physical because of it should be an enormous red flag to every NFL team that has at least some common sense.

That being said, Houston will probably sign Wilson within an hour of him hitting the open market.

He couldnt pass the physical for the Giants, I say no thanks to a LB who will continue to have a recurring injury.

he's smallish for the 3-4 and he is not healthy. what exactly is the upside to obtaining him? what younger player's roster spot is he gonna take?

i'd rather have a draft choice...

Nice player. Good career so far. We don't really need him or his health issues. You could always use more depth at LB in a 3-4 defense, I just think there are better fits for us than him at this time!

I would not be opposed to Wilson if he could pass a physical and would be willing to play for vet minimum with incentives built into the contract.
