Here are some news and notes from Cowboys practice and Wade Phillips' news conference.

Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis was yelling at his unit during the early portions of practice. That's in sharp contrast from what Bruce Read did last season, who was mostly seen and not heard.

Newly signed Allen Rossum will return kicks and punts Sunday vs. Atlanta, and that has put the Cowboys in an interesting situation for their 45-man game roster. Safety Mike Hamlin (broken wrist) is healthy enough to play on special teams, but coach Wade Phillips isn't sure if Hamlin will be active. The Cowboys will use five roster spots for special team players -- Rossum, Mat McBriar, Nick Folk, L.P. Ladouceur and David Buehler.

Running back Felix Jones will play with a knee brace Sunday. Phillips said the second-year player has "looked fast" during practices this week.

If wide receiver Roy Williams plays Sunday, he'll wear some padding to protect his ribs.

This is where having a designated "kickoff" specialist hurts. Id like to see Mike Hamlin get back on the field!

I can't disagree more. Buehler has been a big bright spot for this team.

Im not saying he's chopped liver or anything but with roster spots at a premium and the holes we have, I think he's a luxury we could survive without.

Buehler will do a lot more than Hamlin would. I'm not sure who you'd even deactivate to play him. And I don't know how much you want a rookie FS getting his first NFL time ever against a top QB like this anyway.

Can a special teams coach be named Coach of the Year?

Gotta love Joe.

Has anyone even noticed that Beuhler is on the Punt-Coverage team? I thought my eyes were playin tricks on me, but he was out there vs. Denver & KC.

Do you remember our kickoffs from last year? I think we were the only team with zero touchbacks.

I don't know that I believe Hamlin is going to make a bigger difference than a guy who gets a touchback on darn near every kickoff.

I just hope Roy Williams can play. You really can't tell when he's in there.

Wait...

They all landed on the 20 or out of bounds.

Haha yeah. It was pathetic. Does anybody know the opponents average field position from last year compared to this year? That would show a good indication of Buehler's effectiveness.

Why not just use Ogleetree for punts and KR?

If the staff thought Ogleetree was up to the job, Rossum would not be on the team.

I agree, the ST specialists are all critical positions.

Oh, and one of your favorite players is "Miles Austin"? :D

I agree with you. Rather than a "kickoff" specialist being a problem, I'd say using a roster spot for just a kick returner would be more the problem, in this case.

I want to see Ogletree more as WR , remember though he fumbled a return out of bounds at kc ,not good in a close game.

if "Ferris" can put the ball in the endzone, we won't need him on special teams
