What is his contract status?
In 2004 he signed a contract to last the 2005 and 2006 seasons but in 2005 he signed a multi-year extension.

I thought I heard BP say in a presser this season that the "lateral move" thing isn't a rule any more, unless it's a head coach moving to another team as a head coach.

He said the reason they changed it was because teams were creating new coaching positions, like "assistant head coach" which they would call a upward move from a defensive or offensive coord. and it caused lots of confusion.

Now if a HC moves to another team as HC, like Herm Edwards, compensation must be paid... and it would be that way if Cowher coached somewhere in 2007, since he's still under contract. But IIRC, anyone that's not a HC can take any position they want to.
