Carpenter has been coming on strong this year. I wouldn't put the bust label on him just yet. Prossman

Doesn't matter how Carpenter played last year if reports of his improving play this year is borne out in upcoming reseason games. The added quality depth he could provide behind ILB Bradie James & also at the other ILB position behind Zack & Burnett would really help our defense. Can't wait to see/hear how he and several other players look tonight.

A 1st round pick LBer.
Hasn't even contributed 3 years in.
In a 3-4 defense, at that.

There's no argument.
Never has been.

To THIS point, I'm with spectre. (with the exception it's TWO years in) Hasn't done one thing. We'll see tonight if he can turn it around. Even if he does, I get the feeling they're trying to pump his "value" up for a trade...........we'll see soon enough.

He's played two seasons. Moved from out, to in, to out, and back to in. Spencer, on the other hand, has played oone position and is entering his second season. By your standards, if he doesn't replace Ellis right now, he is a bust.

Changing coaches on Carpenter hurt him last year. He was injured for half the season. People just want him to be a bust and I don't know why. Is it because he doesn't look like what most people think a LB should look like?

I'm counting this season as the "3".
He's not cracking this starting lineup which in itself is a bust for a 1st rounder, IMO.
But I don't see him contributing much this season in any regard other than in a rotational role... something players from later rounds are as capable of.

Then acknowledge, by your standards, that Spencer is a bust if he doesn't start this season.

how can you count this season already when we haven't even played one pre season game?

Spencer has already played and contributed more than Carp in one season.

The difference in our coaches' opinions on Spencer's potential and Carpenter's potential, immediately beginning their first seasons, were black and white.

Spencer was kept at bay by someone (Ellis) miraculously playing at a Pro Bowl level which was unprecedented. Carp was not held at bay because of the talent ahead of him. He was held back because of his ineptitude at the position

That said... I will apply the same label to Spencer if he isn't able to contribute significantly to this team during this season.

It's not about dissing Carpenter or his lack of ability. It's more about calling out the scouting for overdrafting a mediocre player. Carp is not at fault for lofty expectations. Carp is just trying his best to do what is asked of him, I'm sure.

While I agree he has been a disapointment im glad we didn't label guys like Bradie James a bust after him not seeing the field for years.

I think Carpenter would start on a lot of other NFL teams. We just have so many Quality LB's that its hard to get him out there.

Look at guys like Rocky Boiman, Scott Shanle, and Scott Fujita.

They couldnt crack the line up here and they go to other teams and start and even lead their teams in tackles.

Those are the words Jason Witten yelled at linebacker Bradie James during a passing drill Monday afternoon.

Witten went right up the middle of the field, past James, to make a catch for what would have certainly been a big gain and maybe a touchdown.

Witten wants more from his defense.
