TEN THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT NEW DALLAS COWBOYS SAFETY WILL ALLEN: By no means did the Cowboys make a big splash in free agency this summer. But the team did a few players who could contribute including ex-Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Will Allen. Here are 10 things you may not know about him:

Ex-scout Bryan Broaddus joined G-Bag Nation on 105.3 FM The Fan last week. Here are some highlights.

On having Will Allen listed as a starter:

“I did not have the highest opinion of Will Allen. I though Will Allen was maybe going to be a band aid, a bridge player to the next guy, a veteran to start the season off. I think what he brings to Barry Church or playing next to him is a clam presence. Barry Church can be a train wreck out there not as far as not knowing what to do but just banging people everywhere, kind of playing crazy, overrun a play. I think Will Allen bring some calmness back there to him. Maybe he can kind of reign him in and say you go make that play, I’m going to be behind you, that kind of stuff. Instead of playing (J.J.) Wilcox and Church together right now, where both of them are just see ball, hit ball, I think you need someone on the back end when they play deep thirds that he’s able to kind of rotate over, help the corners, be solid, be dependable and make a nice solid play instead of going for a big hit like you might see from Barry Church.”

On the status of Ben Bass:

been my fear all along is Allen ends up starting. He is just second division starter in my opinion with little upside.

will allen has looked good by all the accounts I've heard.

Anything around average is an upgrade from sensabaugh. Our safeties, if healthy, are much improved from that garbage last year.

Oh great, the last thing this locker room needs is another shellfish player.

LOL. I didn't even notice that when I copied the article. I guess their editor didn't either. Probably a spellchecker attack. Nice pun.

I've been encouraged by reports on Allen. Sounds like a perfect fit around a bunch of young inexperienced Safeties, especially considering his experience with this new defense. Start Allen and mix the young guys in, especially early in the year.

Agreed, I really have no faith in this guy starting or making plays with us. Forget all that calmness/vet stuff.

Agreed.

I wonder how vocal of a leader he is and what his role has been in terms of helping some of the young guys. After him, there really is 0 experience at safety.

what?

Every safety this team has trotted out there the last ____ years has ranged from average (at best) to just garbage. Sensabaugh, Hamlin, Ball, McCray. Allen is right in that bunch.

Based what I have seen in reports Allen has been having a good camp. I have no issues with Allen starting as younger players learn and develop. After all to me this is about the Cowboys not other fans pet cats or a preception that was out there before Allen even set foot on the football field. If the object is you put the best guys out there and Allen is showing he is the best option at this point then great.

Lot of talk about Allen here.. no talk about a former pro scout referring to our other starting safety as a "train wreck". Hmm..

Well yeah, because he's not a train wreck. He just can be when Allen isn't around, but he is around, so he's not a train wreck. Duhhh

In the context in which he described it in the article, the term makes sense. He doesn't mean he's bad. Just that these guys are a little more reckless in their play and may get caught out of position.

Broaddus is not a wordsmith. I think he often says or writes things that are somewhat different than his intending meaning.
