FA Part 1-WR

John Brown has the speed to worry teams over the top.
He's been very productive in the past. Not sure of his injury history
He's exactly the type of WR that we don't have but we need.......I am fed up if sloth footed big bodys that are pedestrian

First, they have to be available. Second, we have to be able to afford them and that would probably mean dumping our #1WR and I do not see that happening. Booger loves him some Dez. They may draft one to replace Butler.

If they could evaluate the position worth a crap, I'd say forget the FA $ and trade for one like Belichick usually does. He went after Welker, Hogan and Cooks and all 3 have worked out well. The Cowboys are all about C and D players in FA, which is why they suck at it.

great route runner vs speed???????????? Michael Irvin, jerry rice, drew pearson, fred belitnikoff, et. al. all had stellar careers being great route runners. cincy drafted the ross kid last year. super fast. didn't help them at all. most te's aren't particularly fast. they (witten) are great route runners.

I’m very intrigued by Jarvis Landry. He’s young (25), durable (has played in every game all 4 years of his career) and prolific- he has averaged 100 receptions a year including 112 in 2017. And he’s caught most of his passes from the very average Ryan Tannehill. He gets open and is very reliable.

The downside of Landry is he is not a huge deep threat. He has decent speed but not a true burner.

But I do like his reliability a lot. Dak needs a receiver who runs tight, reliable routes, which Dez will never provide.
I like Landry too.

But there is no way the Cowboys go after him.

In fact, the vast majority of these guys are not on the Cowboys radar at all. Maybe another Brice Butler type. At most.

Strictly scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I have a few days to do this and I'm not doing every position leaving RB, FB, and QB off the list. I may have to do more than one a day to get it done. Try to stay on topic for that position as you'll get your chance for other positions and I'll likely do a part where we go after several, at the most, FAs for the year. These are not likely to all be up to date.

Wide Receivers

Sammy Watkins (24)
Jarvis Landry (25)
Allen Robinson (24)
Marqise Lee (26)
Paul Richardson (25)
Terrelle Pryor (28)
Jordan Matthews (25)
Mike Wallace (31)
John Brown (27)
Kendall Wright (28)
Eric Decker (31)
Donte Moncrief (24)
Bruce Ellington (26)
Brice Butler (28)
Cody Latimer (25)
Taylor Gabriel (27)
Jaron Brown (28)
Michael Floyd (28)
Brian Quick (28)
Tavarres King (27)
Michael Campanaro (27)
Deonte Thompson (29)
Dontrelle Inman (29)
Albert Wilson (25)
Jeff Janis (26)
Danny Amendola (32)
Ryan Grant (27)
Louis Murphy (30)
De’Anthony Thomas (25)
Justin Hunter (26)
Andre Roberts (30)
Kamar Aiken (28)
Brenton Bersin (27)
Brandon Tate (30)
Jeremy Butler (26)
Brittan Golden (29)
Harry Douglas (33)

I don't know all of these and in fact only a few enough to comment. We have some gurus out there who appear to know many more. I'll comment on only a few and rely on you people to fill this in properly. I'm leaving off those I don't think fit our team for whatever reason even if they have the talent to push for the roster.

Mine:

Sammy Watkins (24) Has the skill to push for the #1-2 spot on the roster. Can play the X, Z, W and SL
Jarvis Landry (25) Can make the roster at the SL although can go play outside particularly the Z and W
Allen Robinson (24) . Can play outside esp at 6-3 211. Missed 2017 ACL. Probably resigned by Jags.
Marqise Lee (26) Another Jag but injuries and RZ production likely gets him cut. Wouldn't sign him.
Paul Richardson (25) Another #3 whose game is like Williams. Not interested in this Seahawk
Jordan Matthews (25) Productive former Eagle now Bill coming off IR. About 1000 10-14 YPC. Interested
Taylor Gabriel (27) Small quick burner decent YPC #3 production able to return KO and punts. Interested

Did not look at them all. A few will get cut in TC but we won't see many of these.

So the bracketed numbers are age I assume. I'm thinking Moncrief. Lal knows him well and he won't be a big price tag guy. Watkins too maybe because he had nothing but superlatives for Lal. Probably too expensive for our blood though. One of my favorite FA signings was Laurent Robinson. His yardage to cost ratio was damned nice. Dude should have stuck around because he never had the same success after leaving

Good job Jobber!!

Just say no to all FA WRs. Too much money for under-performers. Draft one if the chance arises.

IDK, I'd take another Laurent Robinson. Not expensive and 900 receiving yards. Don't think we should break the bank but there are $4-5 mill per WR's out there. Heck that's what T Will and Thornton cost. Agree with you with drafting one too

We could also have Dez run 1/2 of Witten's routes.... that would put more speed on the field

We could probably put Stephen Jones on the field and have more stopwatch speed than Witten, but Witten is still money on short routes. I think Gathers gets a lot of snaps next year that Witten got this year, plus I think they work Hanna and Jarwin into the offense a lot more. I think the combination of reduced snaps for Witten and plugging in a guy like Gathers will be a huge difference from that position.

I agree......... but why even have a TE on obvious passing downs

Use Dez instead

If we do nothing with Dez contract I don't see a way to bring in a too free agent at receiver. Way to much money at that position. If we keep Dez we must do something with his contract to bring in a guy that can really help. No need to bring in another Williams or Butler. Get legitimate help
Draft
I don’t see dez contract changing
The only real option is the draft
But that becomes complicated if you don’t full other needs before the draft because to get an elite WR in the draft I think you have to trade up which means you limit your ability to help other positions

many teams use te' on obvious passing downs. witten, ertz, Kelce, gronk, Vernon davis, Jordan reed, olsen, jimmy graham..................the list is long. why??????????????????? they're great route runners. not particularly speedsters.

I think you want to use the Ben Roethislberger playbook with Prescott.

In 2003 he had 295 attempts in 13 games. That's 22 attempts per game.

They ran the ball 38.6 times per game and were able to do this because they had the #1 defense in the league and the #1 running game in the league.

They went 15-1.

Get legitimate #2 and #3 RBs with some speed and spend the rest on defense.

we have 3 compensatory picks in the 4th round and one in the 5th. should be able to find a competent rb among those. i'd use the higher picks for wr and lb.
