It's been called before, the DB has to play the ball by looking for it.

worst penalty ever?

I have to agree...I didn't see whatever play it seems you're talking about as we're watching other TV shows tonight and just checking in from time to time.

I think if a defender avoids contact and does not interfere with the receiver, he should be able to play any technique he wants and even knock the ball down with his back...the idea that you have to turn your head and look for the ball seems idiotic to me as long as you don't touch the receiver...I think it should only be an interference penalty if you bump the receiver without playing the ball.

Agreed. I understand the interpretation of the rule, I just hate seeing a player penalized for basically doing nothing.

Its a bad penalty because it penalizes a defender from being in proper position. Who cares if he doesnt look back at the ball. Its a really bad rule.

your not allowing the reciever the opportunity to catch the ball. It flies in the spirit of competition.

just jumping up with your back turned to the quarterback is a worthy penalty...

I have to ask, how can you not be watching this classic game? I hope you are not sitting there watching desperate housewifes over a classic championship game?

It's already tough enough on defenders as it is. Why penalize them for being in proper position to defend the pass and having absolutely no contact with the receiver...cause they didn't get their head turned around to see the ball?

Sorry but I just don't agree with the ruling.

It wasn't interference, per say. It was face guarding. Read the rule book.

everyone knows it wasnt interference. but its part of the argument if he didnt interfer what did he do? blocked the guys vision? excuse him for doing his job.

There is no penalty for "face guarding" in the NFL. If the defender doesn't make contact, it's not a penalty.

They call it at every level of football including Flag football. It has been around a long time so give me break on that call. They are going to call it like every level of football calls it

Guess the officials were wrong then today. It was called face guarding. The corner cant remember if it was hobbs or mickens was confused and just jumped....they threw the flag and called face guarding......

just like the call they missed during the season on newman.

and their was no contact today.

Thanks Adam for comfirming it for me. I was sure that was cleared up for us all after the Carolina game, that there was no penalty. And I found no trace of it scanning the rule book.
