Fact: Parity now reigns in the NFL

The Cardinals getting into the Super Bowl just gives me hope for 2009 because it proves to me that there are no 'great teams' in the NFC.

The Cards have a few things they do well, but they aren't a team that wins 9, or 8, or 7, or even 6 out of every 10 games against the rest of the NFC playoff field.

If anything they would win 5 and lose 5.

And I am not knocking them because they manned up and got the job done when it counted the most so they get all the credit in the world.

But it seems the days of having terms like 'the 80's 49ers' or 'the 90's Cowboys' are gone.

Parity now reigns in the NFL and I guess it's good for the game.

I don't think that this is a revelation or anything... but this, because of free agency, is a one year league. You sign and gear up for THAT year. It's been that way for quite a while now. The Cards are the perfect example of this. 2009 is wide open.

........so no need to revamp Playoff system to make near .500 teams that win the division into WCard teams, or worse---eject them from the p-offs.....

I recollect some media and people throwing that idea up to test the wind....

I've been saying that parity has been ruling the NFL for 10+ yards [EDIT: years (Not a typo. Just a product of exhaustion.) ]. I disagree with it being good for the NFL. While the opportunities for competitive games has grown immensely since the early 90's, overall quality of legendary-type professional football has been watered down because of it.

Weren't Patriots fans whining like babies about how UNFAIR alignment was b/c they were left out and a 9-7 team like Arizona was in?

LOL

i think the dollar rules the nfl. the newest rule from committee meetings is if you build a new stadium the league will get you a superbowl to help subsidize it. dallas will be in super bowl next year vs an afc team that has never been

I think it's terrible for the game. The Super Bowl champion can no longer be said to be "the best team in football" on a consistent basis.

The casual fans who tune in for the commercials could care less.

And they far outnumber us who do.

MEDIOCRITY, not parity, rules the NFL.

And the NFL is at is apex in making money...popularity. - What other sports league in the world thrives on mediocrity???

NFL fans are idiots to take this from the owners. Then again, most of them are too drunk during the game to notice the difference.

Been like this for years. Patriots have been the only exception, they have been handled very well by Craft and Pioli, along with very well coached by Belichick.

Powerhouse teams and franchises are far better for the NFL than average teams getting hot or luck (pitt, nyg, ariz) going to the super bowl will ever be.

you guys should thank parity. b'c of parity, the cowboy's chance of winning the superbowl next season is as good as any team's.

Otherwise, the patriots should be the dominating team of this decade and will probably be on their way to winning their nth superbowl. And fans of every other team (including the cowboys) would be calling for parity.

If by "parity" you mean lesser quality football across the board then I agree.

Football has stunk since free agency began. Extremes of records such as 16-0 followed up by 0-16 don't seem like parity to me at all.

I'd rather go back to the days of dominant teams again. I don't think football is improved when mediocre teams can win SBs.

I hate parity football. I don't care to see teams that are ok have a chance, I want to see powerhouse teams play like it use to be all threw out the 70's, 80's and 90's. If the ok teams never have a chance to go to the superbowl so be it
