Fan Question: In your mind, what changed?

After beating the chiefs and egirls back to back, the amount of our fans here at the Zone that immediately transitioned to “this team will run the table” and make a playoff run was puzzling.

Don’t get me wrong. I was excited to see this team win three straight and look a lot better doing it. But it was still a bit mystifying. How could a defense ranked near the absolute bottom of the NFL suddenly turn into a team capable of winning 8 straight? The offense has been good most of the time all year. But the defense?

Anyway…here are my questions:
  • What made you believe this team was capable of winning 8 straight?
  • After losing to Detroit, do you still believe this team is playoff bound? Why or why not?
What changed either way?
Why question fans who want to believe and don’t give up at the drop of a dime?

Parity comes into play over long periods of time. My take on this team has changed very little from season’s start when I picked them to win 8 games.

The acquisition of Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams have made us better defensively. But expecting those two guys to miraculously improve our D at midseason to playoff levels was always a stretch.

I still expect us to win 8. My hope is we have a great off-season building a much more complete roster. I’m just not sure we have a front office that really knows how to do that.
mr Bob---i tip my hat to your football reasoning....i got to admit i am total Homer....unless Cowboys mathmatically out i still think

we got a chance to be in top 7....Question---Do you think Fluse is best DC for cowboys going forward?

Why question fans who want to believe and don’t give up at the drop of a dime?
Rock--- our D is either worst or close to worst as far usual measuring statistics....but do you think most blame falls on players

or DC?....i personally believe Fluse may carry more accountability...by the way i am total Homer...until Cowboys mathmatically out

i still think we got a shot....its happened in other years and era's?

Don't worry, my friend...after tonight, I won't be on site for the next two months. My wife has been in the hospital for 3 weeks and her Doctor was projecting 2-4 four months remain for a lung cancer that has spread. She saw her 26 year Doctor and they didn't diagnose a single problem to include kidney stones,

I have to give all to her support and fight with some Doctors. They have done nothing but talk gloom and send her to a Nursing Home.

Leave no man behind and you'll be alright buddy...good luck here and love the Cowboys.

Bob, start from the realization that you're talking about a fanbase that every year in training camp thinks that every undrafted free agent and 6th round "steal" is going to be an all pro, and go from there. Pretty easy to figure out how so many of them get sucked in so easily.

Jerry is the pied piper of suckers and dreamers.
nate----maybe some have such pathetic lives cowboys will remain their heroes?...of course finger is not pointing at me

I agree. I’m just asking what made so many people believe we were going to “run the table”?
The Giddiness of beating 3 in a row, two of them Super Bowl contenders (But in reality 2 dying empires).
And the giddiness from da chronic.

mr CCBoy---- what you describe of course transcends a mere football game....i will be praying for you both...God still does miracles

1. Capable of winning 8 straight? Sure, they were 1 or 2 stops by the defense from winning a game in which they were outplayed. The minute I saw that we could stop the run and make teams 1 dimensional, I believed we had a chance. We held Jamir Gibbs to 43 yards rushing, and Detroit knew we were better in this area and came out with a game plan that was all about passing. I didn’t expect us to win all three of the last games against top NFL teams with a new coaching staff prepping for 4 games in 18 days. But capable, yes.

2. No, I thought it was a long shot to make the playoffs even if we won out. While it’s not mathematically impossible, I see no realistic path now.

My hope for the future is actually more real now than it ever was. A defense that cannot control a team’s run game has little to no chance of beating top teams and playoff games, so even during our 3 straight 12 win seasons, I was never hopeful that we’d have playoff success, and I was happy to see Dan Quinn walk away.

This team’s offense, with a power run game that must be respected even without long speed, and 2 top receivers with a third not named Tolbert, is going to be solid if not exceptional. And imagine what this front 7 will be if we actually pair 1-2 real LBs with Overshown. Get the secondary healthy and maybe add another piece, and I have more hope now than in the past 15 years.
agree Chuck with you for near future...but since i am such a Homer...until we are mathmatically out....dont mind being a guy in middle of the ocean hanging on to piece of plywood singing..."i aint dead yet"?

I did have some hope. Knew it would be extremely tough. Knew after Lions game we’d be favored in remaining games.

I think I even stated 10-6-1 was probably more likely and added that after 3-5-1 finishing with 8 or 9 wins would be a strong finish.

And with an 8% chance our playoff hopes are on life support with little to no chance. I’d say it’s over.
mr Diehard----no please dear sir i beg thee to hang on to the slimmest of hopes until mathmatically disqualified???...we are cowboy fans...which means opposite of fair weather fans....we might be big on stupid but also big on leaving no one behind

I expected them to win about 3 of the final 5 will Detroit the most likely loss.

If you had told me Kenneth Murray would still be starting, I would have changed that to zero of 5...

From trades and back from injury they added 6 players to the defense:
QW
Logan Wilson
Overshown
Revel
Hooker
D. Wilson
that what is puzzling, why did murray play instead of wilson??
Why did they stop using the 5 man def front?
why did they go back to soft zone instead of more man.
Why did they not run more or throw to the rb like det was doing?

To me it seemed like they threw a wrench into their own wheel, and why would they do that??
I dont mind them losing but that was pretty bad and hard to watch.

Three straight wins would or should bet get peoples attention period, especially against the 2, previous year SB particpants and how this team has performed so far. My thinking was turning the corner for the season, with the new additions.

Those wins were at home and everyone beats the Raiders.
Then came road game(Detroit) who lost on and sought to right their ship; the road has not been nice to the Boys.

Back home against Minnesota; don't expect anything.

The change: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
This organization in short is an embarrasment.

I dont think many thought we would win out,but many hoped that somehow they could maybe do it.
the defense looked way better after we got qw and wilson, and other returning players, and they were scheming
things differently on defense using 5 man fronts, more blitzes, more man cov .
With detroit game they threw all that out the window and went back to pre bye scheming, bit of a mystery there.

I was taking it 1 game at a time, and had they had different game plan, and some other things better they could have won, but they just played horrible and had real bad game plans on both sides of ball, and also ST were also bad lol.
I am not mad that they lost, just how they played and the game plans were so bad.
heck play like that against wash or giants, they will lose those games too.
