Jakeem Grant was not invited to the combine, but after his Pro Day performance he has been invited to a private work out today with the Indianapolis Colts and has visits lined up with the Cowboys and Dolphins next month.
So who is Jakeem Grant? At 5'6" and 161 pounds, the 23-year old Texas Tech wide receiver was used to getting overlooked due to his size, but his performance at Texas Tech's Pro Day turned the heads of the whole football world.
Being timed by hand at Texas Tech's pro day, Grant allegedly ran a 4.10-second dash. A New Orleans Saints scout had him at 4.10. However, others in Lubbock alleged that the 40-yard dash came in at 4.3 seconds. The footage is right here for you to be the judge.
Regardless, Grant is more than just a one-trick pony. He had 90 catches last season for 1268 yards and 10 touchdowns in the Texas Tech offense. He also had 8 carries for 68 yards and 2 touchdowns. Grant is a mix of Darren Sproles and Trindon Holliday, with all of the skill position intangibles of Sproles, but he's faster. He had 90 yard touchdown reception in 2015, and 1 of his 8 carries was a 48-yard touchdown run.
Grant has undoubtedly vaulted himself into the mid-round draft conversation with his speed and ability, but mostly his speed. As the late former Raiders owner Al Davis famously said, “Speed kills. You can't teach speed. Everything else in the game can be taught, but speed is a gift from God.”
