I think most would agree that Felix Jones is better than Marion Barber. I would go as far as to say trade up or release Marion Barber. I would love to get something for him, but I'm not really sure that we could at this point.
Felix Jones and Tashard Choice were and are better than Barber.
I've been harping on the fact that we need to expand Felix's role. People say he doesn't have the stamina to be a full time running back, but I don't know where that conclusion comes from.
What I'd like to see is Felix used a lot like Philadelphia used Westbrook over the years.
Westbrook would be targeted for passes 8-10 times per game, where as Jones is targeted at most 4 times per game.
In 2007 he had 6 receptions per game. In 2007 he was getting 18.5 carries per game.
The idea of running back by committee, might be a bit overplayed. At least with the idea of running three different running backs. The most teams split carries between two backs not three. And if we're splitting carries between two backs, I want that to be Jones and Choice, not barber.
And if we keep Barber. I'm hoping we just use him in the role that we used him in before. The closer.
His best year was 2007 when he split carries with Julius Jones (and despite Jones being the starter, Barber actually got more carries).
Here are his 2007 splits
Carries by quarter
1st OTR - 34
2nd QTR - 49
3rd QTR - 42
4th QTR - 79
His average INCREASED by quarter.
He is a shadow compared to his former barbarian self.
Here are some key differences in something he used to excel in.
2007
3rd & Short - 6.9YPC
3rd & 0-2 - 15 carries, 109 yards 7.3YPC
2009
3rd & Short - 3.1YPC
3rd & 0-2 - 18 carries, 66 yards, 3.7YPC
Note: Don't think that because he YPC is 3.7 that means he still making these first downs under 2 yards, considering runs that go for more than 4 yards, and realize he isn't as effective as he needs to be.
I would put up his averages during certain downs, but im tired of posting the same stats. He clearly isn't the same running back. Another player who we should let out to pasture before its too late.
He is turning 27 this year, but already has the wear and tear of a running back at 30.
