Felix Jones? Why is there an anti-Felix Jones clan on the Zone?

I just don't get it. State your case here...
I'm trying to understand why there is such a strong movement against selecting Jones.

It's mostly because he "isnt someone's guy"

He's a good football player and would be a quality addition to our team...he isnt a project or a one yr wonder, and didnt run up all his numbers against pitiful teams either...I'd rather not pick him at 22, but ultimately if we end up with him he'll be a good add

Well, for starters, he's a "speed back" with very average speed. 13 reps doesn't help. Average running between the tackles is another argument detractors could use.

He's been over-hyped due to the Jerry-Arkansas connection...the connection with the Cowboys was inevitable, as is the ire involved with such a constant barrage of Felix-to-Dallas mocks.

Pretty simple, really.

i can't for the life of me understand why the cowboys would select jones with the 22nd pick

here are the remaining teams that select after us.

pitt
tenn
seattle
jax
san diego

and then dallas again.

none of those teams has even the slightest interest in selecting f. jones.

you could make the case that green bay, san fran, and the giants will also pass.

so, why select him in the first round at all?

I think Ray Rice ran within .02 seconds from this "speed Back" and everyone knocks Ray Rice as being to slow? I don't get it? Jones isnt that fast for a speed back.

Rice has better vision, runs better inside, can actually block also.

Jones goes down easy. He does not break tackles. He is not strong enough in either his legs or his arms right now for the NFL, he will not be able to block. And you want him in there protecting ROMO on 3'rd down? He ran OK in College. But he ran a lot outside. He isnt going to be able to do that in the NFL guys.

I don't want him because I don't think he projects well to the next level. Tons of runners have put up big numbers in college and can't cut it in the pro's. And I'm afraid Jones will be another in that heap. I am not a huge fan of his but if you want a speed back then take someone like Charles from Texas or the Chris Johnson kid. Both of them are smoking fast.

I just don't think speed is the most important virtue of a back in the NFL.

And Jones isnt that fast anyway.

Rice actually ran .04 - .07 seconds faster than Jones, depending on which times you go by.

FWIW

I thought Jones was a 4.45 guy and Rice was a 4.47 guy. My bad.

Thanks for fixing that for me.

No worries. Rice's "unofficial time" from the combine was a 4.44...he didn't have an official time (as far as many are concerned), and came up a bit lame while running it...although that didn't stop him from posting one the best 3 cones in combine history, and a very respectable 20 yard shuttle. Some have reported him running a 4.42 "official time" at the combine.

To me he is Julius Jones II. Slightly faster version.

All of the backs that now run out of the college spread offense concern me, including McFadden. The difference is McFadden is big and has rare, rare speed and power. But I don't like the college spread offense at all. It just doesn't provide a good preview of what a RB can/will do in a pro-style offense.

If we pick Felix, I hope I'm wrong about him.

You shouldn't have to ask the question when the answer's so very obvious-- name ONE player who was ever worth a hammered crap in the entire history of the NFL whose first name was Felix...

If you want a clean house, you go lookin' for a Felix... that's about all they're good for...

They should have taught you that in Football 101... you want to look for names like Jim Bob, Billy Ray, Rashard... FOOTBALL names...

Would you draft a defensive back named Shirley??

the problem for me is im still pissed that he only got 8 reps. That is so pathetic if you are gonna be in the NFL. There are no excuses behind that.

He didn't get 8 reps. He didn't even lift at the combine. He put it up 13 times at his pro day FWIW...not that 13 is that much better.

The more I weigh the choices, I really hope Mendenhall or Stewart are there at #22. They aren't speed backs or change of pace backs per se, just RB's.

A combination of one of those and Barber means teams will be constantly stacking eight in the box and allowing Witten and TO to be single-covered.

#22 - Stewart (more likely than Mendenhall)
#28 - traded for RW (in a perfect world)

I wouldn't throw my nachos at the TV if that came true.

I'm not against Felix Jones i'm against drafting him or any other HB at 22 though the same kinda with 28 but that depends more on who's left on the board at WR and CB

Felix Jones just isn't someone who could step in and dazzle. Not someone worth a 1st or second rounder.
Like I said in another thread, he'd be a serviceable RB in the Julius Jones mode, but certainly not a WOW player worth an early draft pick.

Too many other needs. CB, WR

Get over Felix Jones and let's focus on needs by the secondary and WR

You draft players in the first round to at least be starters at their positions.

I feel Felix Jones isn't and never will be a starting-material running back.

Exactly. Its hard to evaluate them as a future Pro when they come out of the spread. Its totaly different. Here is the problem for us today. How many of the top 6 or 7 backs DIDN'T play in the spread? Didn't Stewart also come from a spread offense too? I honestly do not know the answer to this one. I am asking it as a question. I know Stewart, dmac and felix did.

Thanks
