nice read @xwalker
IMO, if he can only go on first and second down, he is still valuable to the team...I don't see an all-pro (no one is saying that), but I also don't see a scrub...let him earn his spot as a part of the rotation...if these guys can stay fresh, then the whole unit will benefit

I'm not saying that's the only place for him on this roster but I'm throwing it out there. He'll get reps at the Mike and the Sam; they'll try and put the best guys on the field for down and distance. Either Durant or Holloman are likely to play the Nickel. Right now it's Durant at the Mike, Wilber at the Sam and Carter at the Will. One reason to put him at the Sam is he is a thumper. I think he can play the Mike but his coverage could be more of a liability there than the Sam.

And yes Durant and McClain have the most experience followed by Carter then.....

One thing no one (I think) has pointed out is if he sticks then McClain might knock a young gun off the roster. They like Sapp (which is not saying Sapp would make the roster anyway).

If he works out, I would like to see them keep him. He's only 24.

My understanding is that Saban has been advising him and that McClain would only un-retire to play for a team that Saban approved. They wanted to make certain that he was in a situation where he could succeed.

I'm certain they can keep Sapp on the PS. Smith, the draft pick, is the one I would worry about losing is they tried to slide him to the PS.

Randy White's career ran with Dallas, 1975 to 1988, as a player.

The incident with Chad Hennings took place in the lockerroom early on in their careers together. Charles Haley when he first arrived, attempted to get into the face of a number of players. When he made a mistake and confronted Chad Hennings, face to face, as described...he became elevated off the ground and slammed directly into a locker. From that point, Charles was still aggressive, but within boundaries with other players. Erik Williams, Leon Lett, Jim Jeffcoat and others were there as well.

Both Chad and Charles arrived with the Cowboys in 1992.

Randy White played with Bob Lilly, Larry Cole, Harvey Martin, and Ed 'too tall' Jones.

I didn't remember the Chad Hennings / Haley story. I know the one with Randy White, but I didn't remember this one.

I'm certain that Haley never got in Erik Williams face. The fact that Haley is still breathing is proof of that.

You bet. Any guy that could make Reggie White cry is one bad man.

Quiet Hennings expected to play loud

By DENNE H. FREEMAN / AP Sports Writer

AUSTIN (AP) - Chad Hennings is the John Wayne type. He doesn't say much. But don't rile him unless you want trouble.

Charles Haley did one day last year. He finally tested Hennings' patience and the next thing he knew, he was pinned up against a locker.

Haley didn't mess with Hennings again.

"I don't go around saying a lot," said the Dallas Cowboys defensive end. "I do have a limit on how far my patience can be pushed."

The Cowboys hope Hennings takes his 6-foot-6, 292-pound frame and this kind of attitude into the 1997 season. Dallas' depleted defensive line needs him until Leon Lett can return from his 13-game NFL suspension.

"We're going to need a big season from Chad, and I think we'll get one," said defensive coordinator Dave Campo. "What you see is what you get with Chad. He's not a flashy, big-play kind of guy. But he's good and solid. He's an excellent NFL player."

Hennings, who received a four-year extension on his contract in the off-season, had an impressive 1996 season.

He had 31 solo tackles and picked up 4.5 quarterback sacks. He was credited with 30 quarterback pressures, recovered two fumbles and blocked a kick.

"There's a lot of pressure on the older guys on the team like me to produce this year until Leon can get back," Hennings said. "I know I'll have some heat on me. I got double-teamed at times last year, and I expect to be double-teamed even more this season."

Hennings - a former Outland Trophy winner - was a sixth-round draft pick out of the Air Force in 1988. He joined the Cowboys after his tour of duty, which included a stint as a pilot in the Gulf War.

He stepped into the starting lineup at left tackle last year and had some big games, although right tackle is his more natural position.

"We're putting him on the right side this year, and Chad should even be better than he was last season," Campo said.

Hennings said although the defensive line is being perceived as a weak link, it could be a strong point.

"I'm sure teams will try to run on us, and I think we can stop them," he said. "We're going to surprise some people. I think we have a great chance to make a Super Bowl run. There are about six teams that have a legitimate chance, and I think we're one of them."

Anyone want to argue? Charles?

I forgot about Smith. Saban and Garrett are pards and Saban is sort of a mentor as well. So I'm glad to see that working. I'd love to have him. If he can move and cover well enough then we have a starter at either the Mike or Sam; or at least provide good depth and teach the younger guys.

From your mouth to Tom Landry's ear..sir.

Well..

As we all know..

There still is a hole in ATT&T Stadium so God and Tom can call the plays.

It's called calling the game from the BIG BOOTH in the sky.

There is no doubt in my mind that Garrett has read, watched and reflected on Tom's career.

He's actually very similar in his demeanor to Tom in his early years.

Jones believes in him..so do I.

I think McClain was an excellent addition in that represents a physical body type we've recently lacked: really big, really athletic MLB.
He's more instinctive than the SLB we have and as his 8th overall draft selection detailed was a truly elite athlete coming out of college.

All that said, in this scheme he is a 2 down player.
And he wouldn't start over Lee on those 2 downs if Lee were healthy.
But on those 2 downs he does give you legit starting NFL caliber player.
And that has a real value.

I think the upside for McClain here is to play 50-60% of the defensive snaps and earn himself a bigger pay day down the line.
At 24 he is right their in age with a huge core of our team.

Why do we have to beat every dead horse.....

Is Rolando Mclain better than any other option we have right now? YES

Is Rolando Mclain better than any other option we would have gotten in the 6th round of next year's draft? YES

Is it possible that any player may retire twice or even a million times in a season? YES

Thread over

Thank god Jerry made a move to fill a NEED

If he plays well they could re-sign him and move Lee to WLB. With Lee's injury issues they have to have a 2nd LB capable of starting in the middle unless Lee moves to WLB.

Just curious but where have you heard this?

And why would the Ravens, a traditionally well-run organization, not be that place but we would?

Ozzie Newsome was with Saban when both were cutting their teeth with Belichick in Cleveland. I guess Garrett is just tighter with him than Ozzie.

To get everyone's favorite Charles Haley gets abused moment right:

Randy White supposedly punched Haley out after he was showing out in his restaurant in Pearlman's book. Haley rode his motorcycle into White's restaurant and refused to move it after White asked him to.

Hennings shoved him Haley against the lockers during their altercation per the article posted above.

White also beat up Thomas Henderson after he tried to pick a fight with him in the locker room according to Drew Pearson.

http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2009/6/13/907531/was-a-cowboy-the-meanest-guy-in

I had the opportunity to meet and spend several hours with Tom Rafferty at a sports equipment show in San Antonio. Rafferty is still a big man, albeit much slimmer than in his NFL offensive lineman days. He has since been stricken with an unexplained malady that has caused him to lose feeling in his legs, but at that show his athleticism was still very apparent.
Invariably the talk drifted to the Cowboys and his days on some of those championship teams. I asked him who was the meanest player in the league during those days. I was expecting him to say Conrad Dobler who had a reputation as a dirty player, or even the Raiders Jack Tatum, the Assassin.

I was surprised at his immediate response.

"Randy White, without a doubt, the meanest guy in the league." He said. I asked if Randy White was a dirty player, and he explained that White was not dirty, just mean. I asked him to define mean.

"Mean is a guy who comes after you with everything he has, on every play, the whole play, and he has a lot to bring. When you go up against him, you are just glad when the game is over because you feel like you have been fighting a buzz saw for the last hour. You just hope you can hold on. That was Randy and anyone who had to go against him will tell you that. He deserved the nickname, Manster, half man, half monster."

I saw a clip on television about Hollywood Henderson and he was laughing as he told the story about picking a fight with Randy White in the locker room. Drew Pearson added some commentary about that incident and Pearson too was laughing as he recalled Henderson getting in Randy White's face. Pearson's comment was something similar to, - ‘I knew Hollywood was crazy when he picked a fight with Randy White, probably the toughest guy in the league.' White threw the linebacker to the floor and pounced on him. In the same video, Henderson stated that he felt lucky Randy White didn't kill him.

The controversial but popular book, "Boys will be Boys" by Jeff Pearlman, relates a story about Charles Haley, a locker room bully, riding his Harley into Randy White's restaurant. White asked Haley to get the bike out of the restaurant, Haley swung and Randy White clocked the inebriated Haley, knocking him unconscious.

I suppose that means Carter plays Sam or is gone? They tried Lee at the Will and it was a short trial although they swapped places with Carter so not sure that means a great deal. I don't see them moving Lee out of the MLB position but I could be wrong.

I was thinking the same thing. There were stories online regarding Saban commenting about McClain during that time. I don't think a guy that quit on several occasions and is a borderline certified whack job would have a ton of options.

Saban sounded about as mystified as anyone in his public comments after McClain quit the last time.

But I guess he was saving up secret McClain sauce for Garrett that he did not bother to do for Newsome.

I bet the Manster would have been an MMA champ. Still looks like he he could snap most people in half.
