If you just happened to read the box score of Randy Gregory’s game versus the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday night, you would just see two tackles and one sack and not too much else. And if I were to show you the clip of his one and only sack, you would probably come to the conclusion that Gregory’s sack was more of a “clean-up” sack than one he produced (which is true). But that box score doesn’t indicate the impact that Gregory had in the game and his disruption should start to excite Cowboys’ as to what is to come.

Today, we are going to look at two of Gregory’s non-stat producing plays that really stood out to me. The first play that impressed me happened in the running game where Gregory was able to use his slender frame to disrupt a run, despite not actually making the tackle. One of Gregory’s biggest weaknesses coming into the draft (depending on who you were listening to) was Gregory’s ability to be a run-defender. I often laughed at this concern because it meant too many people were just looking at Gregory’s size (or weight, specifically) and not his game film, making the assumption that he’s just a pass rusher. But in fact, Gregory’s frame and size often can help him in the run game, despite what the critics say. Take a look:

I love how Gregory beats the block, plants his foot, and drives straight for the quarterback. The quarterback would've been toast if not for the hold/shove on Gregory's shoulder. I can't wait to see what he can do in a regular season game.

This is all Dallas needs from Randy Gregory. He doesn't have to have 10 or 15 sacks. If he can just push into the backfield and disrupt the QB, it could work just as well as a QB.

Personally, that's what I want from Gregory, just disrupt that offense line's protection scheme and the QB's timing. The sacks and turnovers will come.

I sincerely don't think anyone needs to be sold on Gregory at this point. My guess is he's our best defender by the end of the season and may push Dez as our best player by next. He is special. He has it. He is a hard worker. What more could you ask for.

For all intents and purposes, one of his biggest knocks was his coachability. Not that he didn't get along with his coaches, but that he was slow to pick things of. From what I have read and heard from training camp, this couldn't be further from the truth. He has gobbled the knowledge and immediately applied it. That is what is most exciting about Gregory to me.

Thought that was bad, see how the 9ers TE (88) just eliminates Brinkley (54).

And 84 stones and stands Smith up. Though Smith did have an otherwise impressive game. His nose in the running game is pretty incredible. He deduces, attacks and sheds against the run like an 8 year veteran. He is absolutely atrocious in zone coverage though.

I really like Gregory. When Gruden and Kiper had their pre-draft special they both agreed he was the most complete DE can play the run and pass and the best DE. Trouble aside I think he would have been a top 5 pick. I think he can be our Charles Haley of this era. The only thing I do believe is Hardy will be our best defensive player.

Smith earned his spot on the 53 with last games play.
