Fire Nolan, insert Edwards as interim DC

The defense is slow and weak. Not s good combination. They also seem to have low football IQs and show a lack of effort and passion far too often.

There's no way to sugarcoat it. They are the worst defense I have ever seen, at least through the first four games. There is not one single thing they do well.

Edwards took over in Minnesota as the DC in 2014. DVOA rankings by year under him:

2014 - 23rd
2015 - 14th
2016 - 7th
2017 - 1st
2018 - 3rd
2019 - 4th

The Vikings let his contract expire in order to make Zimmer's son the co-DC with the DL coach. FWIW, the Vikings defense has slipped to 19th this year.

Granted, some will say it was really Mike Zimmer that created those defenses, which is likely true to some extent, but at this point, what's it hurt to put Edwards in charge?
Well zimmer is still there and he’s not so I wouldn’t credit zimmer all that much
But DC is only part of the problems
Much of the blame goes to the guys on the field

Do it!

I'm for that.

There are talent issues for sure, but this is the worst defense in the NFL and they shouldn't be. The DC is the easiest thing to fix now............. other than some dabbling like bringing in Harrison at DT, there's not much you can do with the roster at this point.

Let's also note that one of the reasons given for bringing in Nolan was he was going to apparently help the pass rush and help us be better at generating turnovers.

How's that working out?

He's a mediocre to bad DC. The defense is actually getting worse it seems each week. He didn't have a unique situation as there were 11 other new DCs in the league that had to work under the same restrictions and yet Nolan is performing the worst.

It was a dumb hire, easily the worst one McCarthy made. Stinks too because I think he made some good hires elsewhere but the season could unravel over him hiring a guy who gave him a job years ago.

11 new coordinators. Only us, Cleveland, NY Giants, Washington, Lions, and Rams. Have guys who are new to the team. Everyone else has continuity. Do you see many good defenses on that list?

Nolan was never a guy I got excited about
His history is very lacking
I’d rather have Edwards but not sure a change now helps anytime soon
But I’d also want MM to make that choice and not jerry

One of the beat writers put out a stat that showed of all the new coordinators, Nolan is performing the worst in points per game and yards per game relative to the last defense under the previous DC. So while no great defenses on that list, there is one DC that has made his defense significantly worse than the previous version.

He was a poor hire and it will cost us.

MM brought Nolan in. I am not sure I'd trust MM on making any defensive decisions at this point. This is the one time I might applaud Jerry sticking his nose into something.

When you offense gives the ball away constantly and you fail on multiple fake punts, you will end up giving up a ton of points. D has been bad but don't put the point total on them.

Also, we happened to have matchups with teams that have been humming on offense. Over such a small number of games, context is very important.

I know nuanced evaluation is not your strong suit, but you aren't even trying

Well fans have screamed for years to let the coach have his guys

After what we’ve seen, its hard to argue against that move.

I started this thread but I am under no delusions that they will actually make a change any time soon. McCarthy is tied to him and the Jones are always slow to make change until it's almost, or is, too late.
Oh yeah that's Mike's boy. Mike would never get rid of him. I'd hope Jerry would though.

Making a litany of excuses for a guy who has largely been an average DC isn't nuanced evaluation. It's just struggling to accept the reality that the Cowboys likely made a poor choice for their DC.

We aren't running a 3-4. We are running more of a hybrid. We basically run a 5-2 in base and a 4-2 in nickel.

I don't know if this is what we would be running if we had Vander and Lee healthy. What I'm seeing is a D that is trying to get the best front 7 guts on on the field.

He has guys like demarcus Lawrence and griffen standing up when they never have before. It’s pointless.

Are you dumb?

So you actually watch this defense and tell yourself that coaching is the problem? WOW!!!!!
I think we're just aiming for a little higher than worst defense in NFL history.

If you fire a coach after 4 weeks then you never really believed in him.

Or you realized you screwed up to begin with.

I suspect McCarthy gets this feeling often after he eats his 5th burrito, "oh why did I do that?"
