George Young, the late former GM of the Giants, was quoted as saying that Bill Belichick was the worst human being that he had encountered in all of his years of football.

I have no trouble believing that at all.

Same can be said for many others...certainly when the ravens won on that fluky bomb in Denver (where the Denver DB looked like Nelson Cruz chasing a fly ball).

Wow... Oh wow... I still can't believe that one.

So meant to blame there.

Coach/ DC/ player.... Players.

There should have been such a string emphasis ... "No matter what you do don't let anyone get behind you"!!!

I agree that a person that is business savvy AND personally vested in the fans/teams best interest should be in charge. For now we have Goodell.

First, I just gotta say in my opinion a team that doesn't take advantage of five turnovers and falls down on an INT with blockers and only the QB to beat for a TD (as Greg Cosell has shown) deserves to lose. That game is on Green Bay.

Second, there's no question this was a bad year for the NFL, but I also think the media scrutiny today is unparalleled and has grown as the league has. Like Landry Fan I've been around longer than I wish I've been, but there's nothing new to see here. The league always had nefarious things going on.

The previous ignoring of serious injuries (see just about every old player)
Hazing (you know it was brutal)
Domestic violence & violence in general (see Ernie Holmes, Ray Caruth, etc)
Cheating (see the Raiders)
The evolution of rule interpretations (see the Holy Roller)
Horrible officiating costing teams big games (see Cowboys Colts SB - Steelers Oilers, Championship Game)

What is bothersome is there's an air of deception and a recurring disingenuous message from the league that rings hollow. Roger Goodell is from my hometown (Jamestown, NY) but he does not get the hometown discount from me.

The problems are not new to the league, but the way they've been handled this year has been poor. I expect the league (and Goodell) to learn from their mistakes and be better. Taking away a lot of his autonomous authority will help and the continued media scrutiny will help.

I know I am still stinging from the Dez rule and it extends into the Super Bowl but I'm not taking the doom and gloom approach to the future of the league as a whole. Nobody is going to let the billion dollar golden goose die.

Awesome post. Thank you. I love to hear the real stories/views from back in back in the day.

Point 1 - absolutely. First thing I said to my fathers... Wha is he doing? He had room. He acted as if the game was down to a minute left.

If you are yo give a defense which I am not, just a devils advocate point of view. He didn't want to fumble it back. It cost him.

Point 2 - very true. People say things like, ohh it's bad today, in general, and the truth is.... What you posted

Please.

When you have to rely on a fake field goal and a knucklehead not doing his job on an onside kick, along with the opponent doing everything they can to give you the game?

Yeah, you don't deserve to be there.

Since when does it matter how a teams wins? FAIRLY , I might add.

I wouldn't care of Dallas had 20 ints, 20 fumbles, 20 missed field goals, 37 CATCHES that WERE CATCHES,yet called incomplete, in one game, only winning by a score of 3-2..

IF they are in the SuperBowl, that's all I would care about.

Dallas made the plays to beat Detroit, Green Bay made the plays to beat Dallas. Seattle made the plays and came back and beat Green Bay.. With the help of a full meltdown of the Packers. Still, they earned, they are there. Dallas is at home..

Astericks? Only recent Super Bowl I can see by having one by it is the Stealers/Seahawks game. The officiating in that game was so one sided, it wasn't even funny.

No problem. Sounds like we have a difference of opinion. I much prefer seeing someone earn something rather than getting lucky or having it somehow given to them.

Dallas made the plays to beat Detroit,

And yet the controversial call cheapened and lessened that victory.

Green Bay made the plays to beat Dallas.

And didn't that lame call ruin things for both sides?

Seattle made the plays and came back and beat Green Bay.. With the help of a full meltdown of the Packers. Still, they earned, they are there. Dallas is at home.

You've said it yourself - "with help" - between that help and the goofy plays to get them back in a game their play had them deserving to lose, in this fan's opinion, they don't deserve to be playing for a championship.

That team that was lucky to pull one out against Green Bay isn't deserving of being in the Super Bowl, even if they do beat the team that cheated to get there.

Astericks? Only recent Super Bowl I can see by having one by it is the Stealers/Seahawks game. The officiating in that game was so one sided, it wasn't even funny.

Difference of opinion then, this one is a Shampionship to me.

One team lucked into it, the other cheated.

Really?

So you feel that they were the better team last Sunday and deserved that win?

Because I sure don't.
What does "the better team" have to do with anything? They scored more points that Green Bay and won the game, without any cheating that I know of or awful play calls that I can remember.

The postseason has nothing to do with determining the best team (that's almost impossible to do, most years): it's entirely about determining a champion. Nobody "deserves" anything: they accomplish what they accomplish.

I bet Detroit fans would be saying the same thing if Dallas was in the superbowl. It sucks, but what can you do.

Call me a stickler, I like to see teams (and people) earn things rather than being gifted them or getting lucky.

Goodell is in trouble......He has to be.... Someone had got to be held responsible.

The extremely bad bad calls in the playoffs..... Detroit yes,

But that Dez catch replay over turn was the worst call I have ever seen. Maybe the worst call ever . In the history of the NFL. Certainly top 5, top 3...

Goodell cant even get this stuff right. And then add in the domestic stuff, the way fines and punishment is dished out, and now this cheating allegations??

I'm not sure he survives.....if something else goes down.

Wow! Someone doesn't just say that for effect.
Look at Bill in his pressers. Matches what he said.

That's not the point....

Then that's not the point all at the same time.

They were gonna beat the colts no matter what. But he wasn't taking a chance that the colts defense got aggressive and or lucky.

< enters thread >

XVII is the first askerisk before it was played Super Bowl. It was the end result of the first major in-season labor strike that lasted almost 60 days back in 1982.

I thought they were the better team going in, but they played badly enough to absolutely lose that game and if it were the Cowboys they were playing against, we would have crushed them.

I don't know. We were behind a few times this season. Did we not deserve to win? It's 60 minutes, GB couldn't finish 4 out of 60.
They deserved to lose IMOP.

I have no problem with anyone having a differing opinion than my own. It's what makes for lively conversation.

What I saw was a team play terribly, turn the ball over a ton, and then essentially 'steal one' with a fake field goal and an onside kick. All the while helped by a coach who continued to make calls that kept them in the game.

I don't see it as any accomplishment or something worthy of a team trying to be called 'champion'.

I hear you, but they are facing what I consider the best team in the NFL for the SB. I think it should be a good game.
And I credit them for overcoming the Pack. Like you said, differing opinions make the world go round.

.

Nothing was given to anyone. Seattle went out and made plays. Luck or not. Green Bay didn't..

Green Bay didn't stop Seattle when it mattered. Plain and simple..

Dallas didn't stop Green Bay when it had to when it mattered.. After Dez's Catch...

The win wasn't given to Green Bay, they made the plays to earn it. Same as Seattle.

You can it whatever you want to call it and I'll do the same.

Green Bay was absolutely 'given' something, the benefit of one of the most ridiculous, embarrassing, and damaging review reversals in league history.

And Seattle was given the opportunity to get back into a game they had zero business winning due to terrible decisions from Green Bay's coach, a fake field goal, and a boneheaded play from a player disregarding what he was instructed to do.

If that says 'championship' to you, that's fine, that's your opinion.

One I don't share.

Shampionship.

Wow.

Your post just made me think of course correction:

Detroit. Bad call reversed to no call, Dallas advances.

Dallas. Bad call reversal to incompletion. Green Bay advances.

Green Bay. Bad, just bad play for last few minutes. Seattle advances.

So, now... What? Seattle wins to "correct" the nfl football world?
