I agree that a person that is business savvy AND personally vested in the fans/teams best interest should be in charge. For now we have Goodell.
First, I just gotta say in my opinion a team that doesn't take advantage of five turnovers and falls down on an INT with blockers and only the QB to beat for a TD (as Greg Cosell has shown) deserves to lose. That game is on Green Bay.
Second, there's no question this was a bad year for the NFL, but I also think the media scrutiny today is unparalleled and has grown as the league has. Like Landry Fan I've been around longer than I wish I've been, but there's nothing new to see here. The league always had nefarious things going on.
The previous ignoring of serious injuries (see just about every old player)
Hazing (you know it was brutal)
Domestic violence & violence in general (see Ernie Holmes, Ray Caruth, etc)
Cheating (see the Raiders)
The evolution of rule interpretations (see the Holy Roller)
Horrible officiating costing teams big games (see Cowboys Colts SB - Steelers Oilers, Championship Game)
What is bothersome is there's an air of deception and a recurring disingenuous message from the league that rings hollow. Roger Goodell is from my hometown (Jamestown, NY) but he does not get the hometown discount from me.
The problems are not new to the league, but the way they've been handled this year has been poor. I expect the league (and Goodell) to learn from their mistakes and be better. Taking away a lot of his autonomous authority will help and the continued media scrutiny will help.
I know I am still stinging from the Dez rule and it extends into the Super Bowl but I'm not taking the doom and gloom approach to the future of the league as a whole. Nobody is going to let the billion dollar golden goose die.
