"Kathryn Smith has done an outstanding job in the seven years that she has worked with our staff," Bills coach Rex Ryan said in a statement released by the team. "She certainly deserves this promotion based on her knowledge and strong commitment, just to name a couple of her outstanding qualities, and I just know she's going to do a great job serving in the role of Quality Control-Special Teams.

The only history the article could point out was that she was an administrative assistant? Is there anything about the game on the field that she has a history with that they could talk about?

I don't know anything about her, but I've known plenty of women who were more assertive/masculine than some of the "leaders" that have held head coaching positions in the NFL. If she has the requisite knowledge, then so be it.

Do you really want equality? If so, ignore this story.

Reverse inequality is still inequality. Don't make a big deal about a "Quality Control-Special Teams" coaching hire just because it's a female. If you truly want males and females to be treated as equals in the workforce, stories like this must be treated with the same shrug of the shoulders you'd treat it with as if it was a male coach getting hired.

When Gregg Popovich hired Becky Hammon to be the NBA's 1st female assistant coach, he didn't give her one bjt of fanfare and responded to questions about her as if he was confused by the interest in a simple assistant coaching hire. That's a guy who TRULY treats men and women as equals.

This reminds me of Mike Damone from Fast Times @ Ridgemont High "assistant to the assistant manager of the movie theater".

It's still news considering she's the first. The Spurs hire also made news at the time.

There are female coaches at other levels of the sport including some who've held Head Coaching positions. The NFL and NCAA are behind the curve on this.
