I am confused. Many of the earlier posts are saying putting Brewster on PUP was a smart move. Why is it smart? Isn't it the only sane thing to do? Assuming you like someone, don't you always PUP them instead of IR if you can? Is there some disadvantage to PUP? I thought it was IR lite. (i.e. no roster spot, attend meetings, same salary cap status, etc.) I thought the only difference was that they got to come back and that it was harder to qualify for (have to miss training camp)

For all the grief our staff takes, this is actually pretty savvy. I wonder if that will be acknowledged or not. Probably not.

Not ----that would require giving the leadership and ownership some credit --not going to happen;)

The difference is simple. If you put a player on IR, he's done for the season. If you put them on PUP (I think you have to miss all of training camp, etc.), they're eligible to play after 6 games I believe, if they have healed enough to do so. So basically, putting Brewster on PUP gives the team a chance to have him play later in the year, while putting him on IR keeps him out all year. However, if after 6 games (believe it's 6 games) they don't think he'll be able to play or contribute this year, they'll IR him then.

I really doubt McQuistan takes a roster spot over Holland. McQuistan gets rag dolled on almost every play. Holland is a decent guard.

Well they need to keep their thinking caps on, and not get rid of some guys that could be good players in this league and keep guys that won't be, when Saturday cut time arrives.

This is great news. Just when I thought it was not possible for us to draft a serviceable OL, we finally get some encouraging news about Free and Brewster.

Um... This is what I said I understood. I am asking why this is a smart move. He is eligible for PUP so you put him on PUP. It seems automatic not smart. I don't understand why this isn't a no brainer.

I agree. It would seem like a no brainer to PUP the guy. If after 6 weeks he isn't ready IR him. No harm no foul. Maybe I am missing something here, but if there is a shred of a chance that a PUP eligible player can come back in the middle of the year then you have to do it.

I think I heard at one point if a guy is put on IR they pay half his salary. I may be wrong on that but it rings a bell. Maybe someone could confirm that. So perhaps they must pay the player's whole salary if the PUP him?

Now a few years ago they should have PUP'ed Greg Ellis and didn't. He came out for the first practice and couldn't go. Once he walked on the practice field that first day they could not PUP him.

About time they made a smart move.
Does the Brewster PUP move count against the current 53 man roster. or do we get roster exempt until he's ready?

No, he doesnt count until he's eligible to come off. at that point they get a week or two I believe to actually activate him, if they do so they'd have to release someone.

Or if he isnt ready, they can put him on IR.

Yep, said it was an outside chance, but since he was eligible for the PUP, why not leave open the possibility.
I agree.

The PUP is a bit of a tease. I still remember Darren Woodson being on it all of his last year and every week there was hope late that year he'd return and he never did.

I think the way it works is that the player in on PUP 6 weeks, then he gets two weeks to practice with the team. Then the team has two more weeks to decide if they will activate the player or put him on IR.

So basically they have 10 weeks to look at him.

I agree. It was the best option. They know whether or not there is even the remote possibility he could recover from his injury to be able to play or practice. It is not especially insightful. It is what any team in a similar position should do.
