how do you have to spend more than you have? that makes no sense.

There's a minimum spending level that must be met over 2013 to 2016. 89% of the cumulative salary cap must be spent as cash over that period of time. They are not there. They are short by $21M-$22M.

They have $12M in cap space.

Crawford had 29 pressures and 5 sacks tacking on double teams with one arm... Please tell me what were you guys expecting with Hayden next to him?

Double teams. Same thing people said about Hardy.

Yeah, Crawford and Hardy were both eating double teams all day.

So how do they spend $22m with only $12m? Is that what you're saying cause the restructures? To free up $22m?

The extra cap space may not be for free agency exclusively. They may be looking to extend Fredricks.

Good point. He's coming into his fourth season. If they don't extend him, they have to exercise the 5th year option on him (which ain't cheap) and then tag him after that if a deal still isn't done...starts to get very expensive. They will extend him soon, and that could very well be the need for more $$.

Is there a contract that this statement couldn't be applied to?

No, but the Cowboys have started to design their contracts so that it is much easier to restructure. In essence, the player is getting multiple signing bonuses. The initial one and then "restructuring bonuses".

Smith's base salary jumps from just over $1 M last year to $10M next year, his cap # goes from $5M to $14M.

Smith will still get that $10M next year, but $6M of it will probably be a restructure bonus, which could drop his cap # to $10M, saving $4M in cap room without impacting the player (could be more or less depending on how much the team wants to do and league rules).

Crawford's cap # jumps from $2.8M to $8.75M. His $6.75M base salary is guaranteed. Sounds like a restructure bonus to me.

Exactly. He gets my respect for fighting through a season in which he would have been justified to sit out and get surgery. But because of that he gets ragged by some fans. Give him a healthy year with a solid DT next to him and he is going to start getting mentions for the Pro Bowl.

This isn't a new thing for Dallas. They haven't "started" anything.

As far as the multiple signing bonuses, provided converted base salary is paid upon conversion (it makes sense it would), couldn't the same outcome be achieved at the time contract is written?

Lastly, what is it that you see in Tyron's contract that specifically tips you off that the contract was meant to be restructured?

The length of TSmith's contract is what makes him the ATM machine.

Players with 5 years left or more can get the full pro-ration on restructures.

Plus he is expected to play out his entire deal.

TCrawford's money is guaranteed so there is no reason NOT to restructure. They stole an extra year of pro-rating the signing bonus by doing the deal last year. That ate 20% of his signing bonus, so he doesn't have as much dead money even with a restructure.

Dez for example has a ton of dead money left and they won't restructure him unless they get real aggressive in FA.
