Lots of discussion about Floyd after last years draft and
much discussin about Jernigan and this year's draft.

How do the two compare?

Sharrif Floyd 6'2" 297 4.95 Forty
Arm length 31 3/4"
Hand size 10 1/8"
10 yard dash 1.73

Here's what Ourlads had to say about Floyd...

Thick upper and lower body build. Works through a double team
block but has problems with low cut blocks. Uses his hands well to
control a man scheme blocker. A disruptive penetrator who works to
finish the play. Quick off the ball. Shows some surge to get by
offensive tackles. Contains well as an edge player. Hard to tie up
on a reach block. Struggles to rush the passer. Will stop his feet
on a pass rush. Gets wired to blockers. Needs to change up his
pass rush bag of tricks.

2012 stats: 46 tackles, 13 TFL, 3 sacks, 1 forced fumble

Timmy Jernigan 6'1" 299 4.98
Arm length 31 5/8"
Hand size 9 5/8"
10 yard dash 1.76

Here's what Ourlads has to say about Jernigan...

A inside running lane road block. Top level instincts and agility. Good
lateral quickness and hand use to stack and shed head-on running plays.
Plays low and with leverage to hold his ground. A one-gap disruptive
penetrator. Works through traffic to make a play. Presses the pocket
and gets upfield push. Can also be a quick penetrator. Plays on his feet
with good flexibility, base and quick hands. Plays the inside gaps, mostly
lining up over center. Smaller than the typical nose tackle, but plays
low and powerful making him tough to push back.

2013 stats: 63 tackles, 11 TFL, 4.5 sacks

Finally Floyd carried a slightly higher overall grade than Jernigan.

As I said in previous posts, I think they are the same guy. I don't see the compelling reason to draft one guy this year higher then the guy we passed on last year.

There's a lot of merit in what you posted.

I'm kind of cool on a proposed Jernigan pick.

there is no compelling reason to take him at 16 but our Dline is decimated and we could really use him in a trade down.

24. Cincinnati Bengals: Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State -- Pairing Jernigan with Geno Atkins would provide one of the most dynamic defensive line interiors in the league. Jernigan has some red flags stemming from his performance in the BCS National Championship Game against Auburn,

but his ability to play both the nose and the 3-technique is very enticing.

some other people think he can play the 3 tech

That just means he is more athletic than most NTs. The Cowboys are saying the same thing about Terrell McClain doesn't mean you want them playing it full time. Also defenses don't exactly play it straight every snap. Sometimes the NT and 3 tech will switch responsibilities. It also doesn't take in account that Marinelli sees the NT or 1 tech differently than others do. Floyd was thought to be a 3 tech by most of the league but Marinelli saw him as a 1.

I think Jernigan is a little slow for the 3-tech and he has the Drake Nevis short arms. If we want to draft someone that high for the L-DT, I would rather take S.Tuitt who's versatile along the defensive line, can play the 1 tech, 3 tech and some SDE.

Do the Cowboys ever make sense ... no.....maybe they will this time.... after further review, taking Jernigan off my short list.

I don't think Jernigan is in play at 16 but I think he is in play in a trade down situation.. along with guys like Ward, Lawrence, and Crighton. I think it is true they would not take a 1 Technique in the top 20 but if they trade back to 26 or further I think things change.. They probably wouldn't draft a Center in the "first round" either but once you get to the late first you lose the whole thing about "premier positions"

There's some merit it what you posted.

Obviously there must be some interest in the guy because they've spent time interviewing him.

I think it's easy to lump the 2 together because they are similar athletes with very similar builds. However, I dont think they play all that similar. Jernigan plays "grown man" style of DT for lack of a better term. He plays with an attitude and with a ton more strength than Floyd did. Jernigan also uses his hands extremely well which makes him a lot more effective.

If Donald, Barr, and Lewan are off the board at 16 my 1st choice is trade down, but if that's not an option my next choice would most likely be Jernigan. He may not be a 10 sack type of DT, but that doesn't mean he still can't have a big impact on the defense.

I'm ok with him in the mid-twenties somewhere, but I just don't think a one-tech in this scheme being worthy of that high a pick. His measurables are pedestrian (especially explosion numbers), so I don't see him being a truly effective three and that alone removes him from #16 consideration in my book.
Actually warming to the thought of Ealy. Seemed to get better as the season went on and he's more athletic than his combine numbers showed. Not sure how much stock I put in his pro day numbers which were off the charts, but I do think he's a higher end athlete for the position.
