We wouldn't want to overpay for any player, but who says he's going to get a bunch of big offers?

"Drayton Florence isn't expected to re-sign with the Chargers this offseason.

They don't have much interest and Florence's experience should get him a solid deal elsewhere. He struggled in 2007, like most of his career, and will probably be overpaid. "

I guess the Chargers have no intrest in bringing him back.. Not quiet sure why we would want this guy. I know Stewart and Phillips have ties to him but why would we want to over pay for this guy. I guess you could say he is better than Jacques(Strap) Reeves but that's not really saying all that much.

That's really all there is to it. I don't think anyone is looking at him as a starter opposite Newman, but rather as a replacement for Reeves...whom is even worse.

We would still need to take a CB early even with the addition of Florence IMO.

I wouldnt mind seeing:

1. Newman
2. Henry
3a. Florence
3b. Cason/McKlevin/etc...

Wanting the guy is not the same as over paying for the guy unless you think he has zero value.

I prefer Dallas just draft a corner and throw him out there as the #3 guy. The best way for a corner to learn is to get in there and start mixing it up.

Yeah, I think with Newman needing a new contract next year it just wouldn't be wise to sign a guy such as Florence. He would be an upgrade over Reeves for sure, but I don't think we should bring this guy in.

Whoever we bring in as a 3rd corner needs to be good enough to step in as a starter because Henry is too injury prone. I don't know if Florence is the answer though.

Anthony Henry is better than Florence, just in case y'all didn't know.

Drayton has a lot of skills. It's just that he has a couple bad plays because of his decision making. If he cuts down the mental errors, we will be a very solid #2 CB. He makes mistakes when he tries to be too agressive. He needs to play within his talents. Once the lights go on (if they ever do), he will be solid. Just my .02s.

I don't get how people think he was bad....he is a solid corner and for the right price I think it would be a nice get if for nothing else but a little insurance.

I'm STRONGLY with joseephuss on this one. Just draft a guy and see what happens. Signing CB's is a risky and expensive proposition. Henry hasn't really been worth the money IMO. Not because he can't play, but because he can't stay healthy.

In case no one noticed, TNew wasn't exactly a shutdown corner the second half of this year. He was getting burned fairly regularly. So 2 corners might be a better option, draft or otherwise. :starspin

I have no idea if he's going to be a Cowboy, but Florence won't sign to be a 3rd CB. On the free agent cornerback ladder he's second tier behind Samuels/Trufant/Asomugha, and there's no shame in that. He's going to sign for starting CB money, and starting CB money is going to get a lot on the open market with virtually every NFL with plenty of cap flexibility and the huge demand for cornerbacks in the NFL.

From Football Outsiders:
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/2007/12/21/ramblings/stat-analysis/5920/

Worst Success Rate

Jason David, NO: 32%
Stanley Wilson, DET: 36%
Johnathan Joseph, CIN: 39%
Leon Hall, CIN: 40%
Drayton Florence, SD: 41%
Marlin Jackson, IND: 41%
Lito Sheppard, PHI: 41%
Roy Williams, DAL: 41%
Eric Green, ARI: 42%
Darrelle Revis, NYJ: 42%
Atari Bigby, GB: 42%

David must have been better in Weeks 12 and 13, but he still has ridiculously bad numbers that make you wonder why anyone would ever throw to a receiver covered by Mike McKenzie. The Bengals have no pass defense. So much for my comments in the book that Drayton Florence is better than Quentin Jammer. Lito Sheppard has now gone from terrible to amazing to terrible in the three years we’ve been charting, but at least this backs up the comments in the Game Charters Speak article that he has not been as good this year. A couple of the safeties who get burned the most when they have to play man are here, including our new favorite whipping boy, Atari Bigby. Sorry, Atari, we kid because we love. Well, because we love nearly every other player on the Packers who isn’t you.

Worst Yards per Pass
Jason David, NO: 14.5
Hole in Zone, 11.9

Yes, Jason David is worse than throwing at a hole in the zone. Fred Thomas gave up 9.3 yards per pass last year. Egads. I guess not every player is meant to play in every defensive scheme.

Michael Huff, OAK: 10.8
Stanley Wilson, DET: 10.7
Drayton Florence, SD: 10.6
Corey Ivy, BAL: 10.0
Leon Hall, CIN: 9.6
Patrick Surtain, KC: 9.3
David Barrett, NYJ: 9.1
Cedric Griffin, MIN: 9.0
Al Harris, GB: 8.8

Al Harris also has a 47 percent Success Rate so far this year. We love Al Harris, but he’s had an off year even while the team around him is soaring, and that Pro Bowl selection was a lifetime achievement award.

This was through 13 games last season. Was it a couple of bad plays per game?

I'd only want him if he didn't get a lot of great offers and we could get him at a cheap look to be our #3 CB. He's better than Reeves at that spot.

But I do agree we'd still have to draft a CB for the future.

Right. So you didn't actually watch any games then, did you?

The only game he got 'beat' in down the stretch was Carolina where Steve Smith (One of the leagues best and fastest WR's) beat him a couple times after Newman was injured. Even the ****ty announcers (Chris and Bryant) were smart enough to notice that Newman was playing injured not not playing like himself.

Feel free to try and point out where he was getting 'burned' other than that. Because I clearly remember he didn't play in Washington and then the playoff game the Giants never even threw the ball in his direction.

I would love Florence on this ball club. 1) because he has more experience then any of our cornerbacks in running the Phillips 34, 2) He is a major upgrade over Jacque Reeves, 3) He is a man to man bump and run corner that we need to give Ware that extra 2 seconds to get to the QB.

Sign Florence in FA
Draft Mckelvin in the 1st
Our pass defense is upgraded with just these 2 acquisitions.
