I just don’t understand the whole “the season’s over” mentality of fans. 10-5 or 5-10, the season isn’t over until the Cowboys play their final game of the season, whether that’s a playoff game, a game and record that wasn’t good enough, or a game with zero impact on the playoffs.
Do some fans actually tune out when the Cowboys are officially eliminated from playoff contention? Is it win a championship or go fishing? Watch old movies? Start watching your second favorite team?
I’ve been a fan since the 60’s. I’ve seen the Cowboys go 13-3 and 1-15 and everything in between. I’ve seen teams with less talent make the playoffs, and I’ve seen top talented teams crap the bed and be out of the playoff picture the final third of the season. The Cowboys win as underdogs and lose as favorites, and I’ve seen it with every coach the Cowboys have ever had. I watch every game, and I enjoy it. When Jimmy Johnson was the biggest loser in the NFL at 0-8, I relished the lone victory over the Commanders in a 1-15 season. No matter the record, no one could imagine a team with Michael Irvin and Troy Aikman going 1-15. We make excuses for Johnson now because he won two SB’s, but the entire NFL and media were laughing openly at him and Jerry that year; they were even referred to as hillbillies in the media, and there wasn’t a single sign anywhere that they’d ever figure it out. I still enjoyed every game because I love the Cowboys.
We all want to win, and we all have opinions about coaching, players, and the front office, and frankly, those opinions change dramatically year to year based on nothing but the record, but hopefully you still love the Cowboys and enjoy watching your team play, win or lose.
Happy Thanksgiving! The Dallas Cowboys have brought me great joy for the past 51 years, and this season is no exception. I’m thankful the guys wearing the star have been a team I can look forward to every year.
