Keep in mind that JJ Watt and Khalil Mack COMBINED for 9.5 sacks as rookies.

Any move we make or would have made for a pass rusher is a future move. The returns are just too small for rookie players to assume any instant upgrade.

We need young talent on the DL, but we cant expect a real 2016 impact no matter where we took them

So when do we start?

So is this another excuse for the drafting of a guy who won't play next year?

No. I just keep hereing people post " We need pass rush NOW" and lol

Draft is litterally the worst place to find an instant pass rush boost they are wanting. You need to be looking at vets. The draft is where you build your future pass rush

We desperately need bodies on the DL.

By that logic, you should never draft a DL because they'll never produce as a rookie. I, myself, I never expected too much production out of a rookie DL, which is why I wanted to build a starting caliber DL in free agency before heading into the draft. Not only did we fail to build a decent DL with veterans, but we also failed to address the future of the DL with rookies.

I hope you are not serious with this

By this logic we should never draft a DL because he won't help this year

I can't get over how people defend anything we do.

Jason Garrett can coach and Cowboys draft picks can't be questioned.

I am far from a Cowboys apologist but if the Cowboys truly believe this guy can be a stud for 10 years I really can't get pissed that he may sit out one year. That's really shortsighted thinking.

I get having issues with the risk. I even understand if people are upset that we could have moved down. But sitting out a year is no big deal to me if the kid turns into a ten year player for us.

There are plenty of players who can help us on defense they said.

Zeke is a win now move.

Smith is a win later move.

This team has no freaking organizational philosophy. Sickening because I thought we'd gotten closer...

Dodd and Ogabah were the targets thats likely why we heard the cowboys were trying to move up. They were the best players available to rush the qb and when they were gone they took a chance on the best player in the draft.

No, you should never expect instant production from a rookie. You may get it, you can probably get it from a top 15 pick. But beyond that you can only realistically expect an effective sub role. You draft a DE now to get starter production in 2017. If you get starter production in 2016, you are extremely lucky

When did I say you need a rookie to help this year. Thats not the draft is about. The draft is about building your team for the long run.

FYI I was in favor of a DE pick and called the Smith pick terrible. The OP is directed at people clamoring for DEs to provide an instant impact. The expected instant returns on a pass rusher is small. You take a pass rusher because you need build a line for the long run. If you want on instant pass rush, your best bet is the short term FA market

Frankly if youre look
Ogabah was Dodd would have been the picks if they were there

Exactly and to your earlier point neither would have likely made a big sack impact this year. Jason Jones or Greg Hardy are still out there and likely would make a bigger sack impact than a rookie in the 2nd round. If those on this board felt defense was so important we should have passed on Elliot and went defense in round 1.

I don't care what he does you don't gamble that pick on him.

I concede he was the best player in the draft easy. You don't gamble at 34.
