SAN DIEGO - Former Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was killed after he was thrown from a Chevy sedan he was driving, police said Saturday.

Kiel, 27, was driving alone after leaving a party at about 10:15 Friday night when he hit a wall in San Diego's upscale Scripps Ranch neighborhood and was thrown from the car, police Sgt. Alan Hayward said.

Kiel was barely breathing when paramedics reached him and he died about an hour later, Hayward said.

Friends had tried to keep Kiel from driving home from the party, Hayward said, and witnesses told police he appeared to be driving in the wrong direction when he crashed.

Police would not know whether Kiel had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol until toxicology tests were performed, Hayward said.

A second-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in 2003, Kiel played four years in the NFL from 2003-2006, all with the Chargers.

In February 2007 he pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor drug charges for shipping prescription cough syrup to Texas, the most significant of several scrapes with the law.

He was released by the team after his plea.

Kiel had been led off the practice field and arrested in the locker room by Drug Enforcement Administration agents in September 2006, suspected of shipping at least two parcels of prescription cough syrup, apparently to be mixed with soft drinks to make a concoction known as "lean."

The felony charges were later dropped after he completed community service, and he was serving three years probation for the misdemeanor charges.

He was cited for urinating in public outside a San Diego nightclub in January 2007, but the city dropped that charge.

Damn, I have a lot of family in Scripps Ranch..I'll call them to ask if they know anything about it.

What a shame, though. He was probably drunk. Last weekend, I had to tackle a buddy of mine because he was trying to drive home after doing about 8 or 9 Irish Car Bombs with me at a party. Stuff like this is ALL too common. It's a pitty that his "friends" didn't do what they needed ot do in order to stop him from trying to drive. If you see someone who's intoxicated in ANY WAY (alcohol, drugs, et al), and they try to dive or operate machinery, it is your DUTY as both a person and an American to stop him/her from doing so. Because they're not only risking their own lives, they're also risking the lives of everybody else on the road with them.

crazy, my father was a meer 26 years old when he decided to drink and drive which lead to his death but Keil was "lucky", my father was in a coma for 47 days after hitting a house, a tree, a light post then getting flung from his 1988 mustang gt. If my father had pulled through he would have been in a vegative state- blind in both eyes, deaf in his left ear and paralyzed from the neck down.

Not something to mess around with, that will destroy your liver faster than alcohol. But I think his luck just ran out. Very very sad. He was a really good player at a&m.

Same here. It saddens me to see young people die, but its worst when people under the influence drive and put others in danger. RIP.
