Former Titan Rob Bironas dies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas died Saturday night after a car accident near his home, according to police.

Metro Nashville Police said Bironas, 36, lost control on a curve in his 2009 GMC Yukon Denali and crashed after 11 p.m. less than a mile from home. Police said in a statement on the department website that his SUV was speeding when it went off the road and hit a line of trees before coming to a stop upside down in a culvert.

Bironas was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police said there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs at the scene.

The Titans released Bironas in March after nine seasons. The Tennessean reported Bironas had worked out earlier this week for the Detroit Lions and for Tampa Bay during the offseason.

Bironas married Rachel Bradshaw, daughter of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw, in June. Police spokesman Don Aaron said a police chaplain was with her after the crash.

Wow, I was just wondering what happened to him, when I saw he wasn't the titans kicker last week. Truly sad, especially given his age

wow, that sucks. I was just commenting during the game in the chat area, that it was strange not seeing bironas kicking for the titans. I wonder if bradshaw will be on Fox today. you know how football players are, even after tragedy, duty calls. I feel bad for the bironas and bradshaw family. this news saddens me.....this news brings me back to when Paul Walker died.

That is sad. Had him on my fantasy team when he broke the record for fg's in a game.

I hated to hear of his passing. He won me some money a few years back playing fantasy football. He was vastly underrated imo.

This is a really weird story. It appears he had some kind of mental breakdown.

A woman said Rob tried running her and her husband off the road moments before the crash.

Students say Rob Bironas chased, threatened them
Two Belmont students say former Titans kicker Rob Bironas threatened to kill them and sideswipe the truck they were in before confronting a man and woman in another car and trying to run their vehicle off the road Saturday night. Minutes later, Bironas lost control of his SUV and died in a one-car crash.

Connor Fraley, a 20-year-old student, said he was a passenger in a pickup truck that Bironas tried to hit on Franklin Road during a high-speed chase, after Bironas made threatening comments at an intersection minutes earlier.

The allegations surfaced less than a day after another woman told police in a 911 callSaturday night that the popular Titans kicker tried to run her vehicle off the road just before crashing himself.

Bironas lost control of his SUV and hit several trees before ending up in a drainage culvert on Battery Lane, upside down. Bironas, who played nine seasons with the Titans, was 36.

A Metro police spokesman on Monday said the investigation into the fatal crash is "ongoing."

Early Tuesday, Fraley detailed a frightening encounter he and three other Belmont students had with Bironas around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, shortly after Bironas' wife called police to report him missing. The incident took place at the intersection of Battery Lane and Franklin Road, not far from where Bironas would later perish.

This isn't just above the legal limit. That is a scary high BAC.

Rob Bironas' BAC above legal limit

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The toxicology report shows former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas had a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit for driving in Tennessee when he died in a one-vehicle crash.

Testing released Friday by the Davidson County Medical Examiner's Office shows Bironas had a blood alcohol level of 0.218 percent. Tennessee's limit for driving under the influence is 0.08 percent. The toxicology report also says a low level of diazepam, or Valium, was detected, but at a level so low it would have a "negligible effect," according to a news release.
