They are trying.

What are you proposing?

I just posted what people are saying. Just having a normal retirement/healthcare set up for ex players would help though. Just guessing

The players get paid millions upon millions to play a game. Even the scrubs get paid hundreds of thousands upon hundreds of thousands.
The NFL is supposed to give them an extra $3k a year for healthcare? When do the players need to become responsible for taking care of themselves with the millions that they are making?

This post is wrong on so many levels. A majority of NFL players aren’t multi-millionaires or superstars. They also have a shelf life of about 3-4 years. So you have guys making hundreds of thousands for a few years and they walk away banged up and NFL just acts like they don’t exist. You’re acting like every player is in a mansion with cash on the bed and they just don’t plan their lives. This attitude is prevalent too

I know it’s catchy to say that something is wrong “on so many levels”, but you need to back up that statement with many “levels” of examples.

In 2020, the minimum salary was $610,000.

Let me say that again. The minimum salary was $610,000!!

Even if a player only plays for a few years on the minimum......he is by definition a Multimillionaire! Most normal people don’t make that much minimum NFL type money in an entire lifetime.

If the players can’t save money wisely to afford their own healthcare....then that is their choice.

And for those players who only play a year or so....well they are very unlikely to get neurological problems because they aren’t subjected to 10-15 years worth of hits.

Either way.....if this is an issue that the players are truly passionate about, the players association should mandate that 5% of their salaries (or whatever it takes) goes into a pool to afford their healthcare. Its really that simple.

Again, you are kind of fudging the whole scenario. What I said is not catchy. You took 1 year. The minimum in years before was in the 400k range and when you take taxes, living expenses etc they aren’t all multimillionaires. Just plain false. They make more than an average American, true, but this isn’t a long lasting career snd it leaves a physical toll.

Also it’s incredibly disingenuous to say that it’s unlikely to produce brain issues if they only play a few years. They’ve played high school, college and pros. So it’s accumulated.

The NFL is a multi-billion dollar business where the owners are raking it all in. Setting up retirement/benefits isn’t that tough a deal to do. It’s a pretty basic idea.

After years of getting their head beat in and fighting for it. I’m not sure why your actually debating this. I posted a tweet and you wanted more because that’s how you roll and I explained it. Their plans have been woefully lacking for years and despite the CBA in 2020 and some improvements guys like this are dying. Improvements have come but many ex players have been screwed throughout the process

I'm not really debating anything. Merely throwing out facts.

Yes, started in 2014.

It breaks my heart when a young man loses his life. No matter how they try to make it safer, football is a brutal sport. It exacts a toll on bodies and mental health. I don't see an easy solution to the problem other than drastically changing the sport.

I agree with the first few sentences.

But I think that we are jumping too quickly to conclusions here. There are a whole lot more reasons as to why someone would die young or event commit suicide other than because he used to play football.

He had chronic alcoholism among other possible sins which is a good start for all kinds of problems. Other possibilities include drugs, depression, and heart disease.

Let's wait until we find out more information first before we start talking about drastically changing the sport.

Even if there is a contributing neurological contributing component to this tragedy.......instead of drastically changing the sport that we all love, why don't we start having players sign medical waivers (like in boxing, UFC, etc) stating the known risks for playing?

Like I had to sign before entering any rodeo event.
